Help Movies on Evo ?

There is a 2GB file size limit, but it's not due to the SD card or the file system (FAT32). The limit is because the kernel on Android is a 32bit Linux kernal (which has a 2GB file size limit).

Try to keep your files below 2GB. :(

Yeah - a number of SD card-using devices have the seemingly-arbitrary 2 GB limit. Whether by that spec or the kernel (good observation, btw), it most likely comes down to a 32-bit integer either being able to roughly represent from 0 to 4 Gigs or +/- 2 Gigs.

I'd say it a don't care - 2 GB really is sufficient for DVD quality (transcode to H.264/AAC), and 4 GB really is NOT sufficient for full Blu-ray anyway, so - not a big loss. Besides - anyone with the wherewithal to be compressing 720p from movie sources already knows how to break it into chapters to avoid the 2 GB wall. ;)

Your key is to optimum performance is to keep your bitrate at or below 8 Mbps if you're running the 1.47.xxx system update and at 6 Mbps if you're still on an earlier rev of the Evo s/w - again - VERY easily done with H.264/AAC (hence the recommendation/suggestion).

Anywhere to download movies with good quality and transfer them to the sd card? I usually just download them from the handheld sections of the torrent sites I use, but after noticing the quality difference, I would like some other options lol. Thanks

Strictly speaking, for popular movies under MPAA control, that's a copyright violation.

Just putting that little warning out there to those that care before this thread strays into dangerous waters.

I'm neither a mod nor a tattletale for this sort of thing - I'm just saying....

Instead of the handheld encodes, look for the standard definition .avi files encoded in xvid and play them via Rockplayer. These files have higher resolutions (probably around 4X higher) and will look better on the Evo since they're closer to the screen resolution and don't need to be upscaled as much. They are larger files, however.

Just tried this handbrake method on Transformers and it came out as a total mess.... It took 2 hrs to rip/convert and it's a 1.3G garbled stuttering mess... Did I do something wrong? Can it not be played using the gallery app?
I tried to rip Transformers too and also Star Trek and they both came out scrambled. It is the Protection that the newer dvd's have that is doing it.

I downloaded a trial of AnyDVD and it ripped Avatar no problem.
Then I used Handbrake to make it Ipod format then it plays on my Ipod, my palm Pre and now my Evo.

Love this phone!!!!!!

I tried putting a movie that I dl from this one place and made sure I dl'd an mp4 if the movie..transferred it to my sd card opened videos in my all program list... It said the movie was there I clicked it to play it... And only got sound with black screen.. What gives? This is the same steps u would use with an ipod touch and it always works!!!

Hope some one find a way to get movies on evo without all this extra steps and time for it to convert

I tried using handbrake and all those other free programs and they all pretty much sucked! Just use AVS video converter either get it for free on "special" site or pay the $40 either way you won't be disappointed! It has a setting specificallyfor the Evo all you have to do is choose Evo from the dropdown menu and then hit convert button! It took about 1 1/2 hours to rip I have a pretty slow computer . Trust me this program is the easiest to use and the quality is perfect . Try it out I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Wow I sound lik an infomercial! I just know how frustrating it was to find the right program but this is it.

Just wait for the netflix app, it will be out soon. :)

I can't wait for that to come out! My wife just got an ipad and it has netflix streaming included. It it absolutely amazing, and it's the one thing that it has over my evo and it's driving me crazy. I just hope that they have netflix for android by the time that the decent android tablets hit the market.

edit out: suggestion to stream/dl illegal movies

Does anyone know if netflix app will allow you to download directly to your sd card, or will you be forced to stream? I would rather have the movie on the phones memory than have to constantly stream (but, thats just me).
Would be AWESOME if it that worked with the HDMI output!! Too bad we are still stuck and cant get that hacked. It sucks that my TP2 did that flawlessly straight out of the box and now we gotta hack the Evo for it to do this....

I have this program...but I don't see where you see EVO in a dropdown menu. There's an option for Android but that defaults to the Hero at a resolution of 480x320. Also, what file type are you converting to?

Just do a search fore RockPlayer. With this program, there is no need to resize or reformat any movies or videos. I have been using it since beta and love it. PM me and I will tell you more.

Rockplayer will not play 720p video nor will it output to the hdmi port.

Properly formated mp4 files played in the stock gallery player will do both. There are links in this thread to both Handbrake and MeGUI specs for assembling the files correctly. Either one with an EVO preset file will consistantly turn out files that play perfectly. Either one still requires a ripper if the source you are using is DVD or Bluray to remove the DRM.

Personally, I use MeGUI as it also does perfect files for my Tivo (which has a different preferred file format) Have a preset for each and its pretty much load the file and one click encode for either device. Spend 5 minutes and plug in the file requirements to build your presets for the EVO and you are done with it.
