Help Just bought Desire- it keeps shutting off

I just bought the phone, and have been charging it for a half hour or so, and it keeps shutting off(or going in sleep mode) while I am trying to set it up.

My first thought is that it needs to charge; I admit, I barely let it charge right out of the box because I am so anxious to use it. Is that the issue? I assumed that even if the batter is at 5-10%, shouldn't it work without issue if it is plugged in to the wall and charging? I will let it charge another hour or so, but I just cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Thanks guys.

It sounds like your screen timeout is set to turn the screen off after a very short period of in-activity. To reset the length of time the screen stays on go to settings> sound and display > sreen timeout set the length of sreen timeout to one that suits you.... timeout still applies whilst connected to the mains unless you set 'always on when charging' ...... hope this helps

If it's plugged in while you're using it then it should work fine. I used mine right out of the box whilst on charge. That whole wait till it's fully charged before using it rubbish is, well, rubbish. Hope your phone turns out to be ok!

It won't shut off if he's setting it up, unless he's really slow! ;)

Thanks guys... and what is this about regret?!? I was already playing around with it almost immediately, I hope it doesn't affect battery life. Sorry, I am a (happy) Android noob and all this talk here about the Desire battery life has scared me a little. I decided against the Iphone4 because **** steve jobs, and blackberries are boring, so I went droid. I am sort of a tech noob, but this forum seems like all I really need. I am just worried about messing up my phone.

Maybe it is the settings, because the screen will go black for a few seconds, and then it comes back on randomly. I stopped playing with it though and am gonna let it charge. Am also thinking about doing that little crazy battery thing, where you plug it in, plug it out, take the battery out, do a little dance, and then it makes it better.

Thanks for the quick replies! It is agony watching it charge over in the corner; I have been without a cell phone for 6 months and want to play!
