Got my Droid Eris Jan, 2010. I've gotten 2 refurbs since then. My trackball won't work when I try to root using amon's recovery (tried both Root for Dummies and 1-Click App). I can't get a new phone until 9/2011.

I really like my Eris, don't get me wrong. It's just a little laggy and my internal memory bites. I'm not smart enough to root via code and would rather not brick my phone because I'm an idiot.

Thanks to all who answered my questions and tried to help. If anyone hears of an easy root method that does not involve using the trackball in the recovery menu, please let me know. :)

There is. Unfortunately, my trackball doesn't work in the recovery menu. So it's not an option for me. I could take my chances and ask for another refurb..

You paid for the phone so get another refurb. even if you aren't wanting to root your phone should work correctly. We went through quite a few Erises (no clue what the plural of Eris is :) ) but the 6th was the charm for my wife and it has worked perfect now. She really didn't want to upgrade as she liked the size and feel of the Eris vs all the phones out right now.

I would recommend returning the phone to Verizon until you get one that works perfectly or if you finally get fed up after a few asking for a replacement model.
