How scratch resistant is the Captivate?

So im debating if I should run without anything on the phone or get a case/shield. I loved how the phone felt without anything on it, very responsive and sleek looking. I recently put a bodyguardz full cover on it and the phone now feels cheap and its not as responsive. Any ideas on what solution would be best?

as far as screen is concerned, I do not see a need for any screen protectors. the glass is quite resistant afaik. but then again if your like me and prone to dropping your phone alot, I would recommend waiting for the otterbox samsung captivate cases to come out, which will hopefully be soon. They're quite nice imo.

I haven't temped fate with coins or keys but so far I'm running naked and all is well. My big worry was using abrasive materials to clean the screen (my shirt, napkins, etc) and so far so good. BUT, I do fear dropping/smacking it against something (like when it's in my shorts/jacket) so I want to get a case for it, but not a cover thats always on it.

I loved the bodyguardz for my iphone but since the captivate has more squared corners I can feel every bit of the shield. This is my biggest problem. Also, I think my issue could be with the dry apply style instead of the wet as you can see all the glue from the dry apply.

I say definitely go for a case if you care about keeping your phone in good condition. I baby all the phones and electronics I owned. Never once dropped my iPhone in 1 year. Just got my Captivate last Tuesday, and it's no exception. However, accidents do happen.

I had it in my pockets of my basketball style shorts and I was trying some different exercise equipment at the store yesterday. Totally forgot the phone was there (it's so light and thin) and it fell out, slamming right onto the metal base of the equipment. The phone looks brand new other than two tiny dents in the metal battery cover. It landed face down on the glass too, after a few bounces! No more naked phone for me, already ordered a case. As much as I hate them, I'd rather keep my phone nice and in one piece

If I had to go with a case I would prob go with the body glove. You think I should get a cover for the front also?

It's scratch-resistant, but not scratch-proof. Your fingers won't scratch it, but hard metal can, like keys in your pocket. Or gem stones in earrings. Anything harder than the glass. Also if it takes a fall, the impact can scratch the glass against objects.

Screen protectors scratch more-easily, but are trivial to replace. The glass screen... not so much.

I got a chip in my screen already and the plastic on the back of my phone that juts out has a lot of hairline scratches. I got the body glove case from at&t right after I saw the hairline scratches and I got the SGP screen protector right after I got my chips. Talk about too late haha

Too many stories floating around about scratched and cracked screens on this phone from every day usage and very predictable drops. Body glove and screen protector for me. I got an unlabeled glove from Amazon for a few bucks and the screen protector from the at@t store. Not as good as naked but god enough. I hate the body glove at the at&t store because of the patterns on the back. I like my plain black one. The one I have is a little bouncy and definitely absorbs the shock of falling.

Body Glove and NO screen protector for quite some time. That's all you need. DO put on the Body Glove though. Because you WILL drop it at some point. And then your scratch-free screen may actually become cracked.

Precisely. I went about 2 months with no case or screen protector and no scratches at all. Then I got hasty at the airport and tossed it in my bag with a bunch of other stuff, including keys, and it came out with a nasty gash on the screen. If you are rolling without protection eventually something is going to scratch it.

Mine lives either in my purse in its own pocket, or on the counter getting charged - it's pretty well protected. I don't think I'll put a case on it, or a screen protector - hopefully I won't be regretting it later on

I always run a screen protector, not so much on the case though I've decided to get one for this phone due to its value(though it does suck to lose the sleek feel of the phone) I use the Zagg screen protector which i recommend, do to its ability to hold up to large amount's of damage with no scratches, I have tested it with keys without any damage and dropped the phone multiple times with no damage. I use a gel case because I found that i like them more then the hard cases and give plenty of protection.

It's the black silicon case for the Samsung Captivate by "BargainCell". I got it on Amazon a month ago. It's plain black and unlabeled. The phone actually feels better in my hand. It's skinny and slippery otherwise. The soft keys at the bottom are a little harder to press with the case though, but I got used to that.

I say don't use a screen protector. Enjoy the awesomeness that is state of the art technology undiminished by any film. ALL screen protectors diminish (to some degree) the display quality despite anything anyone says. However, it is possible to get a scratch as people here will testify. If you do get a scratch go buy a screen protector; it will hide the scratch unless it's really bad. Same argument could be made for using a case too BUT I'd recommend a case right off the bat.

before i returned my captivate that got random shut offs i took a key to part of the screen and i wasn't able to scratch it so i'd say its pretty scratch resistant. I don't believe anything short of a razor or brand new keys will scratch the screen.

You can blunt force the heck out of it.
Just don't temp fate by testing its ability to take a slash from an obsidian blade.
Failed.
However, only noticeable when the screen is not lit up.
Overall, avoid keys, jean buttons, trolls & little kids with broken marbles.

Mine fell only 2-3 feet and nicked the screen. Don't give people a false sense of security... those of you who don't have a scratched screen yet seem to think the glass is indestructible. It is not.

I used a small kids sock. When I need my phone, I take it out of the sock and use. When I don't - back into the sock you go. It's great for keeping it clean and smudge free, easy to grip, and it's about 2 bucks for two cases lol. I have gotten a few comments from friends for having a "ghetto" case, but who cares if it does what I need.

Look, every added layer adds more protection. It's all about how much risk one is willing to take.

Some use a screen protector, thinking that as long as the screen itself is scratch-free, they don't care about the body. Others want to protect both. I mean you could put your phone in a climate-controlled bullet proof box. And just in case North Korea decides to attack us with nukes, there's always an underground shelter for the phone to be kept in.
