Root Root before 2.2

So if I were to root before 2.2 and then wanted the OTA update, it would be a pain in the butt to unroot and then get back to stock from what I have read. What I have NOT found so far is if I rooted under 2.1 then got 2.2 from XDA or somewhere that would allow to NOT have to unroot, how would this theoretically work? Better? Benefits to doing it this way?

While I have your attention as well, I have really looked into the rooting and as the 2.2 release seems to be getting further and further away for the US citizens and the VZW clientele as well, I have almost decided to go ahead and start the process. My questions would be which programs do i need to go ahead and get before I begin the process? so far the list i have seen is:

root explorer or astro or both?
nandroid or Odin or both?
SetCPU?
32 bit or 64 bit software? how do you know which you need?
titanium backup pro or what other backup?
any other programs?

Where do I install these? From the market straight onto my phone or download onto my PC Desktop? which do I get before root and which should I get after?

I know these are a lot of questions and thanks a million to whoever can answer them all. I have read through a LOT of threads and while I know about all the pieces, I just dont know where they are supposed to fit. If this all gets answered in one go, It could be worthy of putting up in the fascinate rooting guide I would hope

all the links to get odin, system, pit, kernel, and clockwork should be linked off there over to xda.

if you have a 32 bit machine or 64 is how you choose drivers. if you are unsure if you have to sets of program files, one with (x86) in your c: drive then you have 64 bit

as for the whole pulling the ota while rooted, we dont know til it comes. generally, root alone will not stop the ota from come through...its having removed/frozen apps that will do that. there is a stock d101 update at xda to ensure you can get back to stock.

alternatively, id be confident that within 12 hours of otas there will be update.zip you could install in cwr to get 2.2 from one of the devs.

titanium backup/root explorer are well worth the few bucks to backup your apps and to move files around post-root. astro is great for non-root and just in general to have.

setcpu is good for overclocking, but also if you like to set battery profiles...certainly not neccessary though unless you overclock. all of these programs are in the market.

id take root first, get that squared away then take a step back and read onto recovery and making nandroids to back everything up.

also (if you were thinking to go that far) i would avoid voodoo kernels atm. within the week i think there will be a new voodoo/new lagfix kernels or something in that ballpark and its not worth the voodoo headache in my opinion...but thats just my .02

Well I guess my main thing is if I begin to root, what programs do i need to have set in place first? do I need titanium backup, nandroid AND Odin? whats the difference for each of them?

How do I check whether I have 32 or 64 again?

Most importantly, what is clockworkmod? and do I need install it?

Is nandroid a backup? if so, would I not want to do that first before I attempt root?

I guess I want to just have all the pieces in place when I do root so im prepared for anything. Im sure I am overanalyzing this way to much but I dont want to end up starting a process and then someone calling me an idiot because I didnt have a program or file in the right place.

ok saw that nandroid is a snapshot of the phone but couldnt you potentially do this before you root so you can go back to completely stock?

you can't nandroid without root, as you need clockwork recovery to do so.

if you right clock on my computer IT MAY say if you have a 64 bit system...if not, like i said earlier if you have two sets of program files in your c: drive and one says (x86) then you have 64 bit.
