Help Verizon: "You need a new phone to get the froyo update"

So, having never received the OTA update(s) for my Inc, I decided to swing by the local Verizon direct store with the "best" technical support.

They told me I needed a new phone, yes completely replace my pre-ordered OG Inc, in order to get any updates. Reason being that they "can't update the phone from their computer, which has froyo on it" ... Thoughts? Seems totally redonkulous to me.

Long "whole story" version:

Me: "I haven't received the OTAs for my phone, has it been distributed to our area?"
Verizon tech guy: "oh man, its been out. Lemme borrow your phone for 15 min, we can set it up"

...20 minutes later (gave them extra time because it is Verizon)

DIFFERENT tech guy: "oh, can you give us 30 minutes?"
Me: ........... sure.

...40 minutes later

Tech guy: "Well get you a new phone ordered today"
Me: "wuuuuut? New phone?! Why would I need a new phone?"
Tech guy: "you're still under warranty, it won't cost you anything."
Me: "my phone is fine, I don't need a 'new' phone. Refurbished phones are not 'new'. Again, why do I need a new phone?"
Tech guy: "Well... we can't connect and update it."
Me: "Hah, have a good day."
