Open Wifi with android sync

It might be a noob-question, but here goes:
In my area there are a lot (a LOT) open wifi networks. My HTC Desire has the capability to auto-connect to these networks, but I am hesitant to enable this option.

While a laptop working on an open Wifi is a risk, I am unsure on what the risk is with an Android phone. So my question boils down to this:
is the auto-sync connection safe for use on open wifi networks?

If yes, which connections are NOT safe on open wifi (like latitude, maps, the browser, etc)?

And if no: is there any way to make it safe? Like using a vpn on a laptop or something similar.

From my knowledge every open WIFI is a risk .
Risk that there is someone sitting in range of this network with computer capturing network packages looking for personal details send along with network traffic (logins password , personal detail, ready to hack to your omputer, bank details , credit card details).

If someone wishes to host a open wifi in order to steal your passwords, there's practically nothing you can do apart from not connecting to it.

I would say you should not be having any problems connecting and using the networks the only thing that I would be careful is going to web sites that are if higher value. what I mean by this is like doing online banking while on an open network. if you need to open your bank or anything very highly personal do not use the networks but for general browsing it is fine. sites of higher value usually have added security which does not have any keys through the network packets. Also android system has its own protection so people that are trying to break into your phone need to really know what they Re doing. experts like that will be able to break the phone encryption without you being connected to their WiFi. if it is official hotspots like coffee shops or restaurants that have complementary internet there is virtually no risk because they are the ones monitoring for security breaches.

I would personally say use the open WiFi at your convenience but be a little more cautious when it comes to very personal information.

A note, if you are on an open network with your laptop or net book, make sure you disable file sharing. I have had no problems using an open/encrypted system, just be careful with "home" systems that are open and not encrypted.

Just figured out that the Desire can work through a vpn. Is that also not safe?
