Help Way to get LG Optimus S's menu without having to actually activate the phone???

OK, so my parents bought me the LG Optimus S since it was free and apparently u cant use the phone (I CANT EVEN ACCESS THE MENU!!!!!!) without it having service. Does anyone know a way that i can actually use my phone's droid capabilities without it having service? THANKS!!

Yeah...I am also looking to see if I can use my WiFi to check out a NEW Optimus S I got for free.

I recently started a new account with an EVO and Sprint offered me a Free Upgrade to the Optimus S. I opted to get it, as it only extended my 2 year commitment by 4 days and it didn't cost me anything (no shipping, sales taxes, etc).

I thought it would be neat to have it to play with, and perhaps, later open up a new account with it for my wife, if Sprint will let me do that without requiring a new 2-year contract. I guess I will have to wait until I want to activate it before I can do anything with it other than charge the battery.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I did not try the voice dial solution... I just posted a link to a possible solution. However, there are a couple users who thanked the solution in that thread so I would guess that they were able to get it to work.

What happens when you try it?

I get as far as Market. I cannot find "z4root". I also tried to find it on my EVO just to see if it was there, but it wasn't.

Any other suggestions?

Looks like it got pulled from the market... so you'll need to go to the source:
[APP] z4root - xda-developers

Okay...but, how do I get this on my non-activated Optimus S? I opened the browser, searched and found the z4root apk file but on many, many attempts, the download was unsuccessful. I guess Sprint doesn't want us to enjoy our un-activated phones

Download it to your PC and copy it over via a USB cable. Get Astro (or some file explorer) from the market and use that to open it.

I finally figured out how to use my Optimus S (apps but not the phone) without having to activate it. Using the Voice Command button, I told it to "open market" and then used the keyboard to search for Launcher Pro.

Once downloaded, I again used the Voice Command to "open launcher pro". That was the magic.

Now, when I power my Optimus S on, I get a menu to select whether I want to open using Launcher or Launcher Pro. Then I select "Cancel" when I get the popup to activate my phone and I go right into the app launcher.

I noticed than I cannot update the Android OS because the Optimus S defaults to the Sprint 3G network to query and download it. So far, everything else appears to work.

Neat....!!! :D

You can download different themes that give you the options to replace the buttons at the bottom. I'm running a "Mac" theme right now and have 5 button on the bottom...I use browser, gmail, and apps along with 2 direct dials.

I know when I want to change the bottom buttons on this theme I just click and hold on an app and drag it to the bottom over a button already there and then hold it for a second and drop it, and the new app replaces the old...you can try and see if it works with the stock theme.

Hey guys, I wanted to know if anyone here can answer my question or can direct me one about replacing the sprint id icon with something else after removing the sprint id. I can live with the button not doing anything, but it would be better if I could replace it with an internet browser. Thanks in advance.

If you root it, you can load a custom rom. I use grom, it is already loaded with the browser replacing the same spot as the sprintid icon. theres alot of roms out there but give that post a read and see what you like. you can always swap out roms and customize as needed

z4root isn't on the market. best to go to [APP] z4root - xda-developers read up on it and download from there.

theres other options and ways to get it rooted and browsing without activation, as long as you are using a wifi connection, Sprint will never know:)

Depending on what release your phone is running on, here's a very good rooting tool for the ZVD, ZVH (Gingerbread) Android release.

[How-To] Rooting LS670ZVD/ZVH (100% automated, no revert needed) - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

It will root, install Xionia custom recovery and busybox with one command. If you've used another rooting program and are already rooted, you can install the Xionia custom recovery by itself. You can also unroot the phone and one of the things I like about it is it allows you to actually restore the STOCK recovery image so if you REALLY need to take it back to the store you can make it completely stock.
Again, this is for the Gingerbread release.
There are other options than z4root for Froyo too.
Just explore the options...
Good Luck.
