Root No Clue Where To Start

I'm pretty techno savvy, especially when it comes to doing stuff, I just have no idea where to look as I have heard about 2-3 different ways to root, plus 1 touch rooting, and I don't understand the ROM concept (I'm guess an overlay like how BLUR is on the DX)

So where do I download SDK Manager or the one-click root?

What are the best/latest ROMS?

Overclocking: best voltage/mHz settings?

Thanks for any help.

SDK: Android SDK | Android Developers

If you're running Win7 x64, don't even bother with the SDK because there's something funky going on with the Motorola drivers. Use z4root (it's the best option anyways because you can root without the SDK or even a computer): [APP] z4root - xda-developers

You'll also need bootstrap recovery from the market (and donate to the guy, I did) or you can download a copy off Koush's website: My Brain Hurts: Droid X Recovery (and Droid 2 too!)

I was on 2.3.9 OTA, so I SBF'd to 2.3.15, rooted, rebooted with bootstrap recovery, flashed the 2.3.32 update zip, rooted again, rebooted with bootstrap recovery again, installed Apex 1.2.1

Happiest. Camper. Ever. :D

FWIW, the SDK works great with my x64 Win7. I've used it and RSD Lite several times with ZERO problems. You have to use the latest Moto Drivers and put the path to your tools folder in the Windows path tho. If you have difficulty, then maybe you have to uninstall all old versions first manually (and in device manager) or use the Driver Installer in the Motorola folder in your start menu.

Think of a ROMs as different versions of Windows on your computer... it's just that someone other than Microsoft tweaked them.

You should download z4root to your sdcard so you always have it available to install. Root programs tend to disappear from market. You can download the latest version here.
