Review: Archos 70

My A70 came yesterday. I put the market on, Launcher Pro, Docs to Go and a few other things. They have apps that will automatically install if you want like ebuddy, fring and such. Easily removable though if you want something else. So far so good. I haven't done much yet because I just haven't had a night to sit down and play. My goal is to have every possible picture, pdf, and video for work on it that I can keep in my bag and show docs in the OR, at a dinner and so forth. 2nd would be to get the keyboard case I posted about for doing small things that would be cumbersome with an on screen keyboard. How people work in DocsToGo with an onscreen keyboard just baffles me.

It does look and feel solid. It makes my Epic look tiny, and I can't imagine how people would want to use a tablet as their daily carry for a phone. Had that argument with a bunch of Europeans and one said a whole sales force (300 people) were going to ditch their BB's and go to the galaxy tab. And that's wider and heavier than the Archos. I can't picture 300 sales reps carrying that around all day. But they also don't have a 4" plus slider phone yet. The Epic is actually quite unique in the Android world. Even the Venue Pro is a portrait slider.

The screen bezel is a fingerprint magnet x 10. I would've preferred a matte finish. The one they have around the speakers would've been perfect. If they ever make a barely there type case for it, I'd put it on in a heartbeat. But as I said, it's a solid piece. The screen is a little let down over the SAMOLED, but that was to be expected. I played some music, and the sound was decent as long as it wasn't full blast. The nav for the AV players are nice.

The stock launcher had a bunch of widgets including switchpro, but I lost switchpro when I went to LauncherPro. And I can't find it in the market even though I paid for it. That would be the 2nd paid app I have that I couldn't find. I even looked up the developer and it didn't show SwitchPro or PureCal (an agenda widget). Both of which I paid for. So that's odd. I also kept getting errors trying to download xScope. Will try to load the app via the SD card. It wouldn't direct download from the site or market.

The screen res is what it is at 480p. A stretched out version of most of the better phones. Not as sharp, but good enough. The Home, Menu, Back and Find buttons are always at the bottom of the screen. I did notice you can rotate any which way and it will rotate the screen accordingly. I thought that was a 2.2 thing? At first I was stuck upside down, and I thought that was odd. A quick reboot and all was right. And there is a reboot option in the shutdown menu. Why that isn't on all devices would be a good question.

The camera was a little grainy, but I didn't really buy it for the webcam. Will I ever use it? No clue, but chances are minimal.

It's been pretty speedy so far. Some little hiccups after installing certain apps. The first time I ran skyfire it was freeze city. But a reboot cured it. Hopefully I'll get more time with it over the next few days to load some media on and get it situated. That keyboard case should be here in a couple weeks, so we'll see how that goes. No idea how peripherals will work. And I just remembered I need to get the USB host cable so I can hook up the keyboard. The case/wired keyboard combo was only $26. Figured it was worth a shot.

I could see the Nook color being a better value if it gets rooted, and I still might go that route, mainly for the color screen. At $250 it's around the same price, and I'm sure I can get a deal on it at some point and then break even selling the Archos. I just don't see anything else having that bang for the buck in the 7" market.

I did see the 10" Herotab M10 with a 768p 4:3 capacitive screen, 1ghz A8 chip with BT and HDMI for $300. That might be worth a try too, but it's a big size jump. At that point I'd get a better keyboard and see how well it would perform at replacing my travel laptop. I do think 9" is still a sweet spot, and have high hopes for the LG. If they made a 7" HeroTab with the 600 res and similar specs, I'd take a look at that too as I imagine the price would be favorable.

I got mine on Wed and I'm loving it. Here are my thoughts on the device

1. I like the screen. I've read people complain about the viewing angle but it's fine for me. I wish the resolution was a bit higher but that really only comes into play when using the web browser. I set the browser to zoom in bit on page open and that seems to have solved that for me.

2. There is definite bug with landscape mode and the soft buttons that needs to be fixed. I don't run into it all that often but it does make using alternate launchers/book readers a little annoying.

3. Swype works really well in portrate mode. Not so much in landscape for me. Letters are to far apart. In landscape mode the soft buttons overlap the side a bit.

4. My android phone has a track ball. I wish this had one. About the only feature I miss from the ipad is the push to hold for zoom in on a text field that allows you to place the cursor where you want it the track ball fixes that on the phone but not so much without it. My finger is not precise enough for cursor placement. (I did figure out that if you hold down the power button an option comes up to modify the soft buttons to include arrow keys but it's really large.)

5. that bottom left corner gets pretty hot. That's the only part of the device that I noticed that. Plus when in portrate mode the side with the camera is a little heavier.

6. This thing is great for reading. The nook app works really well

7. It feels great in your hand. Just the right size and weight.

8. No compass. I wasn't expecting it though. Ipad does have one

9. Google maps works great and wifi triangulation works well.

10. The screen does not get as dirty as fast as the ipad. I'm constantly cleaning the ipad as the fingerprints can really get in the way of viewing. I don't find that to be a problem with this device. The bezel does attract fingerprints but a microfiber cloth cleans that right up.

11. This thing needs froyo. You must manage tasks on it and clear up memory. Luckily the task app it comes with is pretty good. Froyo with memory manager will solve that. My droid eris was about unusable with 2.1 but is great with 2.2

12. Even though it won't charge thru USB the included charger comes with the most common plug styles and allows you to swap them out. Really nice.

13. Battery life is pretty amazing.

14. Video playback is nice and smooth and the audio player is pretty good as well. I still like Mixzing better.

I'm very happy with the device. Once we get froyo I'll be even more ecstatic. I've not seen the need to grab my ipad once since I got it so that's sayin something.

IF you don't use swype, the stock keyboard has left/right cursor keys that help. If you use swype, cursor keys are one of the options like going to the number screen. Also, just do it the iphone way...zoom in and select text. Gets more accurate that way. But it's still not as easy as having a form of secondary nav. A trackpad would be ideal. Don't know why they've gotten away from them. Makes copy/paste so much easier. Palm screwed that up too.

What bug in landscape? Haven't had an issue so far with the soft buttons, though I know video players from the market won't have them disappear so only the native video player ditches them.

Also if you long press on the power button you get a button option that gives you four way cursor buttons instead of the home/menu and so forth. Haven't seen a time when I would want it.

Froyo will be nice. Hopefully in the coming weeks.

And for $250, of course it'll be missing some things the ipad has.

I wish I could figure out how to use the widgets from the stock launcher with launcher pro. Kind of dumb it's either or. Don't understand why they make widgets launcher specific.

When I say bug in landscape with the soft keys I'm talking about how it overlaps a lot of apps. It doesn't seem to be a problem generally in portrait mode although the kindle app does get overlapped. Launcher pro also doesn't have a problem in portrait but when you switch to landscape it's off and just swiping the screen back and forth fixes it.

Quote "I could see the Nook color being a better value if it gets rooted, and I still might go that route, mainly for the color screen".

kinda what I'm thinking. what android version comes with the nook, if any? Was the last nook rooted? I mainly plan to use whatever device as a web browser that's bigger than my DroidX, connected to the X via wifi hotspot.Any comments would be appreciated.

It has some interest over at xda developers. It's not out yet, right? from what I read, it shouldn't be too hard to root unless B&N locks it down more. But what would they care how they sell them? They just want more out in the wild. And yes, the last nook was rooted. And the screen is supposed to be really nice. I kinda like the design of it too.

Just received mine. Can't for the life of me find launcher pro or skyfire, how can I get those apps? Moon+ book reader is supposed to be available as well.

Have you installed the google market app? There's also some sort of region lock on the market that you can partially disable by doing this

That should restore some of the missing apps like Yahoo and Yahoo Video

Still going through the instructions on this page, we'll see.

Update: Works like a charm. Have Market installed, and all the apps loaded that I was looking forward to seeing on a screen bigger than the Incredible. Very fast machine.

I used to have a Gateway convertible with a dual touch/digital stylus panel, and although it was great for school, I've been looking for something smaller with similar functionality minus the stylus. I have used a Samsung Q1 and the Nokia N800, but those machines are simply too slow. With the Archos 70, the capacitive screen is slightly less responsive than the Incredible or Ipod Touch, but so much better than resistive screens I've used.

All in all, I'm glad I waited for something less expensive than the Ipad and Galaxy. I watched the Archos website closely to get one of these, and still they go so fast that the first time I ordered one they canceled it because they ran out.

My wife watched an episode of Boardwalk on the thing last night. She likes it I think. She didn't finish the video, so I paused it and started browsing the Internet, and got into a book I am reading on the thing. Switching between apps was sluggish while the video is on hold and had to bookmark. Google Earth is also sluggish.

I know what you mean about the charging pin, was scratching my head over that one. It seems cheesy, and if that pin gets bent and breaks the thing will be dead.

Somebody pee in your corn flakes this morning? I was kidding. Did you not notice the smilie? I owned one for a few. Nothing bad about it. Just not enough of an upgrade over he Epic for me. Waiting for some one to script the rooting process for the Nook Color and then going that route. Don't have the time for the manual way. Easier to donate $10 for the convenience.

Also, have a cool Duracell charging product that works great for the A70. When I get a chance, I'll post it. Found it by chance.

You mean it increased the screen resolution and changed the bezel from being the fingerprint magnet that it is? :D

Resolution has not been an issue for me but I'm not very picky.

Bezel always looks like I was eating pizza while using it.

I have chosen to keep the Archos because there is nothing in the market that even comes close to the A70 for the price. Galaxy tab is sweet but price and lack of USB is a killer.

GTab may be ok but it's $130 more.
IPadsteveswallet was never an option due to size, weight, and total cost of ownership.

When the new wave of tablets hit in the next 6-12 months I will be ready to buy. In the mean time I have a really cool 7 inch tablet to use.
