New ROM of Android 2.2 (Froyo) for Liquid E

Hey all. New to Android, and new to the forums here. My question is related to this upgrade.

Where I live, we have a Municipal Telephone company. Previously there was Rogers coverage here, but the local carrier and Rogers just formed a deal wherein the municipal (TBayTel) company took over all Rogers customers in the area, and Rogers is supplying support for TBayTel to upgrade the network from CDMA to HSPA.

My question: Because of this change, TBayTel now has Rogers handsets, but the network is NOT Roger's network. Would this upgrade work for my Liquid E?

Firmware V: 2.1-update1
Baseband: A1-04.01.01
Kernel V: 2.6.29
Build #: Acer_LiquidE_1.100.03.PA_ROG (assuming this is what I'm looking for -- Should be able to install 4.001.08.PA.ROG from the Acer site, no?)

I might be a bit late , but i am already on Fido's android 2.2 and the option to choose the "Acer UI" is available.
Is there any way to get it? if i do these steps will it still work even if i am already on 2.2?

Hey. The above method would work but do not flash the .bin in the link on the first post.

Find a .bin here (newer ones on the bottom of the first post. EMEA=European/Middle East/Asia and has English along with many other languages. AAP=Asia/Asia Pacific which has English and 2 types of Chinese- traditional and han. The Acer Download Tool can flash any .bin regardless of region)- Acer Liquid, Liquid E, Liquid Metal ALL ROMs bin extract collection - Android @ MoDaCo

If I am correct, the only Froyo bin which doesn't have the Acer UI is the Rogers/FIDO ones. I know for a fact that 4.002.14.EMEA (latest European bin) has Acer UI.

If you want to keep your stock Rogers ROM (baseband, etc) and are willing to root, then you can install a custom ROM which has Acer UI such as FroyoMetal- CDTeam FroYoMetal V2.75 11/12/2010 - Android @ MoDaCo or Liquid Community ROM- LCR Community Rom - News

To install a custom ROM:
1) Install MalezRecovery- acer-liquid-malez-recovery - Project Hosting on Google Code . Use this for Rogers/Fido phones- Rogers/Fido? Froyo Malez Recovery Fix! - Android @ MoDaCo
2) Download the .zip file for the ROM you want to flash and place it in the root of your SDCard.
3) Reboot into MalezRecovery (instructions for that on the Google Code website for MalezRecovery). A good idea would be to go to the "Backup/Restore Menu" first and create a Nandroid backup. It is a smart move to always have a Nandroid backup in your SDCard in the case that something goes wrong.
4) Select "Flash/Test .zip" and then flash (if the zip is signed, should say signed in title flash regularly, if not, then flash without sign check)
5) Reboot and voila

jUST SAW Acer.sg loaded with official new Froyo update (2nd Ver) on 13th Jan 2011 for Acer Liquid E.....not sure the main improvement....any rooted ver. for Liquid A ?

EDIT: This DOES NOT work on Rogers/Fido Liquid E ROMs due to the lack of Acer UI. It is designed for 4.003.17.AAP.FET but has reported to be working on other BINs (ie. 4.002.14.EMEA.GEN1). Flash at your own risk. If you are unsure, read through the entire thread linked above on MoDaCo.

Link is to modaco but patch is directly from Acer website.

I have a stock Rogers 2.2 version of my phone and just installed the patch listed above. It stopped halfway through the process and now displays the triangle with the ! in the middle and the little android guy. I have tried removing the sd card and rebooting with no luck, any ideas of how to get it back up and running?

The little Android guy with the ! is the stock recovery mode for your phone (note that this patch does re-install the stock recovery).

The reason it is not working could be because Rogers frameworks does not include Acer UI (I completely forgot about this and take full responsibility for not mentioning it).

What I say to do would be to get back into recovery (little Android guy with ! in the middle. You can do this by replacing the battery, holding down Power+Volume Down+Camera, should vibrate 2-3 times, let go, then hold down Power+Camera) and then flash a bin. Note that this does wipe all the info from your phone but if you are unable to boot then it might be the only way to get everything back to working.

To flash a bin (I would recommend a European EMEA bin as it has English along with other European languages such as French but an Asian AAP bin would work too though it only includes English, Chinese traditional and Chinese han). Hello HustlinDaily, the flash was successful! This was my first time flashing and i did not have any problems. My only consern is that the version "4.002.14.EMEA.GEN1" looks and feels completely different than the version that i had (stock Rogers 2.2). Is there anyway to change the settings to go back to something more default?

Only reason I know this stuff is because I have had an A1 for almost a year. We were all noobs at one point lol.

As for being rooted, you currently are not (though it is very easy to get do). The warranty is void as it is due to the removal of Rogers ROM but that can easily be reversed (not entirely sure how to get Rogers stuff back on but can easily find out if you want).

Thanks for the info Hustlin! I have three questions and i guess three options from this point forward. I guess i can either root my phone, leave it as is or try to go back to a stock warranty approved ROM.

If i decide to root what is the easiest / safest method?

If i decide to leave it as is what are the benefits vs going back to stock (other than for warranty)?

Do you know about any or know how to get any rogers stock 2.1 or 2.2 ROMs?

1) Well in order to root the Liquid, you need to install MalezRecovery ( acer-liquid-malez-recovery - Project Hosting on Google Code ) and from MalezRecovery you could easily root/install busybox, flash a custom ROM, create backups (infact, before doing any modding, go to the Backup/Restore Menu and create a Nandroid backup. Always a good idea to have a backup of a stable system in your SDCard at all times just in case).

I would say the easiest is to install a custom ROM on top (as most ROMs have root/busybox which is required by most apps that require root and optimizations to make it faster/smoother). The one I am currently using is Liquid Comunity ROM-Froyo 2.0. Just installed it yesterday so can't comment on battery life (still testing plus I'm mostly plugged in lol) but so far, it seems fast/smooth, the option of the ext2 method of apps2sd/dalvik2sd is working (this basically involves putting all of your apps/dalvik cache onto a partition, usually 512MB, on your SD Card. I have found it to be faster than the Froyo method of apps2sd plus I got almost 100 apps and 80MB free on my phone using this). Plus it has an included app called LCR Settings which makes it super easy to remove included apps, apply themes (and gives the option to create a Nandroid before applying the theme which is nice. Have a legit Gingerbread theme right now), apply/disable tweaks (including ones to make the screen more sensitive, higher than high, wake on camera button, next song on camera button, make the network faster), customize the UI (combine elements of Acer/Android UI, tho I'm using just Android), etc. You can check out the LCR website here- LCR Community Rom - News .

Another great ROM is FroyoMetal which is based on the Liquid Metal ROM. I found it to be alot faster than stock (tho the new version of LCR is probably around the same), a much better camera app (tho LCR has the same camera app now) and good battery life (at least for me, guess that depends on usage). It is currently on 2.75 but 3.0 should be launching soon (possibly with Dolby Mobile, not 100% sure on that tho as developers have been having trouble to get that working on Liquid with Froyo). One which I have never used is T&L. It is LIGHT. Literally ALL stock apps removed (including Google Search and the Camera app, both of which have to be installed yourself)- [ROM 2.2] t&l - Android @ MoDaCo

There are other ROMs (ie Gingerbread ports, Cyanogenmod ports, Sense ports, etc) but some hardware does not work (or work perfectly) due to Acer not yet releasing the sources for Froyo. The above mentioned are the only ones I know of based on stock ROMs (all hardware working).


2) No real advantages. Only one I can think of is Acer UI (which you or I don't use) but that might be a disadvantage as it takes up space.


3) It is weird because the way Rogers/FIDO releases updates is different from the way Acer releases updates. Acer releases them in packages in which a .bin file can be easily extracted while Rogers/FIDO releases them different. They never even released a 2.1 ROM (it just came with the phone, no upgrade packages released). As a result, installing Rogers 2.1 involves flashing an old bin (one which preceded the official release for Liquid A1 due to baseband) and then flashing the Rogers skin on top (which involves installing malezrecovery to do so then re-installing stock recovery, I THINK). Installing Rogers 2.2 on top of 4.002.14.EMEA should be easier (due to the same baseband). Not 100% sure on how to do it, but if you want I can ask somebody (just let me know if you want this).

So far, I am enjoying it. Had it since Monday and it has been pretty smooth for me. Still unsure about battery life as I am plugged in quite often, some have been impressed, others not so much. Me- kinda indifferent.

It is very easy to flash. It is completely different from flashing bins.

I went ahead and updated my phone with the LCR-F 2.0 and am very happy with it. The process was simple enough and i was able to follow all of the guides provided. I now am running on LCR-F 2.0 and have rooted the phone.

I am working up the courage/knowledge to root my phone using your detailed instructions, but the one sticky point is that I am not sure if I can restore the phone to "stock" if I ever need it for warranty reasons.

Do you have instructions to get my phone back to 2.2 if need be?

What type of Liquid E do you have? Rogers/Fido, EMEA (Europe/Middle East/Africa) or AAP (Asia/Asia Pacific)?

All of them can be restored but EMEA/AAP are the easiest. I THINK that the Rogers/Fido one requires flashing an EMEA bin and applying an update.zip (provided by Acer?) but I am not 100% sure (tho I can find out of you are interested).

Also, if you have a Rogers/FIDO ROM, the instructions on installing MalezRecovery is different- Rogers/Fido? Froyo Malez Recovery Fix! - Android @ MoDaCo

Sorry. Here is how you get it back to stock (ROGERS ONLY!!!!!!! It will simlock your phone to Rogers I think).

Credit to Harness for making it workable and giving me the instructions.

First flash 4.002.14.EMEA.GEN1-

Had a hell of a time with the official acer update for 2.2 and thankfully this update worked for me on my Acer Liquid E from Fido. The 2.2 update from acer/fido rendered the soft keys useless and the phone would not power down. This is the second handset from Fido that has done this and I was really pissed off about it until now. 2 months of grief from Fido's horrible technical support. Fire them all.

So thank you very much for the 2.2 ROM and the flashing software. The ROM is really very nice in many ways with the exception that I cannot install any third party keyboards. I'm wondering why and will have to do some more research. Do I have to root the device?

The new ROM of Android 2.2 (Froyo) for Liquid S100 (A1 & A1E) for you. If you know how to flash the ROM with the Acer download tool, it is easy to flash it.

1) Download the Acer download tool from this link: Free File Hosting, Online Storage &amp File Upload with FileServe
2) Download BIN file of Froyo version from this link : Free File Hosting, Online Storage &amp File Upload with FileServe

After finishing the downloads,

1)pls unzip both of them
2) Run acer_DownloadTool.exe
3) Select the correct .BIN file
4) Connect Liquid S100 via USB
5) Click "Start" to start flashing the Froyo ROM
6) Don't disconnect USB cable until the flash finishs and you see the completed message
