Help Gmail Auto Sync fault?

Hello all
T-Mobile UK user here.
I've searched through this forum but can't seem to find anyone else reporting this.
I've had a G2 for approx 3 weeks now, however, the thing just won't sync Gmail as it should - either via Auto-sync or by manually trying.
I've had a G1 for the last 12 months so feel experienced enough to know when something's not quite right.
I am using the G2 in exactly the same locations as the G1 so it cannot be a reception issue.
I've tried sending test emails from my work email address to my Gmail account: Out of the 10 test emails sent over the space of 8 hours, only 2 came through (the G2 was on Auto-Sync the whole time). The others eventually came through via a combination of manually instigating Sync (1 success) or, in most cases, having to switch the phone off and on - even this only worked twice. Whenever I sent emails from work to G1 they would appear on the phone instantly. There isn't a prob with the emails leaving my work domain as I can see that they have all been delivered successfully viewing my Gmail account over the web.
If I leave the phone on the Data Synchronization screen, the round sync indicator is constantly running next to "Google Mail" and intermittantly pauses with the error message that "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shorlty".
I have also found that the reception doesn't appear to be as good as the G1 - I work in central London and live 10 miles south of the river.
I'm running FW 1.5
Kernal 2.6.27-a5504199
Software 1.0.0.A6288
Can anyone offer any advise please?
Thanks in advance

Try going into app manager in the phone's settings menus, going to the google mail apps and selecting "clear data", then power the phone off then back on again. This will cause it to start the syncing from a clean slate. I had similar problems and this cleared it up for me. Ideally do this on a known good wifi connection to avoid data dropouts and to speed the process up.

Are you still having this issue? Because it is happening to me and I have no idea how to fix it. None of the fixes on here work.

I have an HTC Desire. After following so many people's solution for this problem, none have worked for me:- I have gone to manage apps >all > cleared gmail data (there is no gmail storage in the list of apps) & rebooted. I have gone to accounts and sync (in settings) unchecked and rechecked background data and auto sync. I have done same for the email account ie unchecked and rechecked sync contacts, gmail and calendar & rebooted. I have disabled task killer, I have deleted some apps on the phone storage to give more memory on the phone storage. None of this has worked. This is driving me nuts!

Since posting the above there have been further developments.
I was lucky enough to have installed My Backup Pro and backed up to online server prior to this problem occurring. I have just tried restoring system settings but this made no difference. I then restored applications which it downloaded, installed and replaced the already present applications. Hey presto...my gmail now syncs!!!!..no more message saying.." awaiting sync"..."your email will appear shortly"...miracles!!
