Adios Evo, Aloha Nexus S

I don't mean to "crap" on the thread, but I think it appropriate to pass on the warning I regret not listening to when I bought my Samsung devices. Samsung lures you in with great hardware specs then bitterly disappoints with their support. I know that it's a "Google Phone" which should avoid the usual Samsung upgrade follies, but after my last 2 Samsung devices (Moment, Epic) and dealing with my friends Intercept, I'll be avoiding Samsung for quite a while when it comes to mobile devices. For those that do buy this phone, I hope everything is as advertised and you have a great experience.

that is what i have been sayin!

I think the only thing causing Samsung to be slow with upgrading existing devices is having to get Touchwiz working with the upgraded Android. As a Nexus phone, upgrades will be easy peasy. I expect the Nexus S to get upgrades before all other Android phones, even under the Samsung name.

Evo 3D specs look good! This might be the first time ever I upgrade my phone at first chance (instead of doing so after 5 years). The two features I've ever cared about (CPU, pixel density) got a significant boost. The stereo cameras are also interesting. Will be great to produce 3D content.

Im not gonna lie im actually thinking about going for the Nexus S when it drops on Sprint... Will you be able to root it out of the box though.. thats the question. Cant stand bloatware

I'm debating between the Nexus S and the EVO 3D, and I can't seem to find the ppi for the EVO. The Nexus S has a 480x800 Super AMOLED with 235 ppi. The EVO 3D has a 960x540 qHD screen but I don't know what the ppi is. I also don't know if that resolution gets lowered when you take into account separate images for each eye.

Right now the EVO 3D has a lot of unknowns (how the 3D will affect the resolution, how the 3D can affect the battery, can the 3D be disabled, will it be rootable, will ROM makers make ROMs for it, will those ROMs use the 3D, etc.). So I will be waiting to see before making any decisions. Right now I'm leaning towards the Nexus, but the EVO 3D might win out if it really comes out swinging and Cyanogen makes ROMs for it.

True Ive been operating under the assumption it will have an unlocked bootloader and that there will be devs for it. THis is half the reason i love my evo. That would deinitely be a deciding factor for me.

Yeah I have no idea how glassless 3D works... But assuming we take 3D out of my picture, here's the math for ppi.

Known:
diagonal (hypotenuse) is 4.3in
aspect ratio = 960/540 (16:9)

hypotenuse for that aspect ratio would be sqrt(960^2 + 540^2) = 1101px
There are 1101 pixels in 4.3 inches. So there are 1102px /4.3in = 256 px per inch.

I'm very curious about the 3D's display pixels as well. At least we'll all have some legitimate options.

I've still be looking for a smaller form factor. Plus I think 3D is a fad.

This is a concept that never seems to gain traction, but I'll give it a go -

Resolution for still pictures is not the same as resolution for moving pictures - and that because of how the eye-brain works.

3D HDTVs are still only 1080p, and can display up to that for 2D. For 3D, the data are split into 2 540-line fields - and yet, no one complains about the resolution - 3D fans say it looks great.

The existing Evo's screen does not dis-integrate (see what I did there?) into pixels until sufficiently close - with static images.

For moving images, you won't care about the resolution of the screen for 3D, and for all 2D use of the device, moving pictures, you're liable to see no difference.

For 2D stills, unless you have exceptional vision and are among the few that claim to actually see dots instead of solid lines on an Evo at say - 7~9" inches from your eyes - then this will amount to equal overkill.

For a smaller percentage of the population than those claiming to see a resolution difference, a resolution difference will occur.

Fact......I can't see 3d.....not only do I have no depth ....perception but I can't see red or green

The video review I saw of it shows a button where you enable/disable 3D.

really .. sorry dude..

I am not sure... but the new 3D tech does not use color to give you depth.. since there are glasses needed with this new tech.

again.. i dont know.. just sayin.

I was watching a video off of the convention AndroidCentral was at/is at.... one of the LG 3-D phones they were showing seems to be using the same type of 3D Illusion like the Nintendo 3DS. The screen has the two different images, but it's something to do with the way it directs the pixels towards your eyes so that when looking at it relatively straight on (still has to be pretty much straight facing you) you get a 3D effect. It's not as dramatic as the IMAX 3D like most of the high-production movies are, but it's still pretty cool when you do see it. The tolerances for viewing off to the side, or any angles really, are fairly limited, but that's to expect. I think sooner or later, if this 3D trend continues to carry on, things will start to use frontwards cameras to track the general location of your face, calculate the angle of viewing, then re-direct pixels (or something) so that the 3D follows you. I duno, stabbing in the dark, talking out of my ass. That's my take on it at least, without professional knowledge of how it ACTUALLY works. That's just from what I've grasped so far, and am assuming the new Evo will use.

Gaining root access is a big deal but even if there weren't any roms I don't think it would be a deal breaker for me. As long as I can delete crap/bloatware and theme it I can customize my own phone. Custom roms just make it easier for less tech savvy people and those that are just too lazy to fool with it. With the exception of a handfull of devs that write code most custom roms are just themes applied to a colleciton of .apk's and anyone can do that.

That said I'm lazy because I can be, and just flash what's out there. :)

This is for picture and video capture strictly. That said, the only content this is going to have out of the box is 3D videos. Nothing else, according to the reps in all these videos, is going to be 3D. They also showed that the 3D effects can easily be turned off.

The lack of SD card expandability and a lousy camera will lead me to pass on the Nexus S. Shame, too, as it's otherwise an awesome device.

I'm a semi-pro photographer with a rather expensive DSLR system, which is very fast at both writing and reading to memory cards. If someone like me notices no lag when pics are being written to or reading from the SD card in my Evo, then it's really not a factor.

Not all cards are created equal. In another thread several Evo owners were using a utility to test the write/read speed of their cards, and my Kingston 16GB Class 4 (yes, a lowely Class 4 at like $17) was performing closer to a Class 10 rating for writing and off the charts for reading.

Simply put, I will not buy a phone that doesn't have a memory card slot. I'm annoyed that the Evo's is under the battery, and I'm further annoyed that the Mini and MicroSD format was created at all when a fullsized SDHC (or even SDXC) would serve sooooooooo much better and is available in much larger capacities. My Palm Treo 755p has a stupid (although easily accessible) MiniSD card slot, whereas my old Palm Tungsten|C PDA had a full-sized SD card slot in it. Both these devices were the exact same thickness because even a fullsized SD card slot doesn't take up that much real estate inside a phone, especially one as large as the Evo.

Your status has been demoted to amateur photographer. :p

There is absolutely a lag in photo load times.

Make a video scrolling through a hundred or so pictures in grid mode and show me ZERO grey squares....then I will believe you.

Internal flash > SD card.

I will never, ever, ever, never, ever, ever ever ever ever buy another Samsung product. Ever. Complete and utter crap. At one point both my wife and I had Samsung phones at the same time, well sort of, because I'm not sure you can count us both having phones since they never worked. Now I warn everyone I talk to about buying Samsung phones, and its why I won't even consider the Galaxy Tab.

Personally I'm pretty sure that my EVO replacement will have at LEAST a 4.3" screen, if not 4.4" or 4.5". Can't see ever going with a smaller screen.

The nexus phones actually don't have a bad rap. Samsung makes good hardware, but they should leave it at that. They should make a bunch of stock android phones and leave the coding to the people that are actually willing to spend some time into making something good (and updating it once in a blue moon).

Gimmicks? The Nexus S doesn't even have an SD card slot!

-qHD Display @ 960x540 - MAJOR upgrade from E4G
-1.2GHz Dual-Core SoC + 1GB RAM (Qualcomm's MSM8660) - MAJOR upgrade from E4G, besting Tegra 2 / Tegra 3D
-1080P Video Capture/Playback - MAJOR upgrade from E4G

I fear that the 3D features are going to be this phones achilles heel, at least at launch. So many people can't see past the 3D (as it is far from JUST a 3D phone). And this is me talking about people in the forum, which are generally more educated in this field than Joe Blow walking into Sprint for a new phone.
