3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

I'm actually okay with what the phone has now. I haven't made the jump to Sprint yet and having been without my OG D1 and DInc - more importantly, Android - and stuck with my Samsung Alias 2 this thing would be hard to fail at being a lesser phone than what I already have. I'm glad the announcement of the phone came out since I was holding off on getting the original EVO in hopes of something newer.

If Wimax2 has better building penetration then yeah I'm all for it, otherwise I'd be happy with Wimax and LTE built in for future proofing. :)

Also hoping the camera sensor is better.

Building penetration isn't determined by the protocol used, it's the frequency and how much power is being used at that frequency....

So based on that, WiMax 2 won't be any better @ 2.5ghz then WiMax.

I'm not saying you can't have good coverage at 2.5ghz because you can. The problem right now is that there aren't enough towers.. You see the frequency is going to determine how close or far apart you place you towers. Let's say at 800mhz one tower can over 3sq miles. To get the same coverage at 2.5ghz, you'd need just over 3 towers to cover the same area. This is one of the primary reason Verizon and AT&T paid so much for their spectrum in the 700mhz band. They paid up front for better frequency to make it easier to deploy their 4G network.

I think the problem with Sprint/Clearwire's Wimax coverage is that they were trying to cover large areas with the fewest amount of towers possible Looking for best bang for the buck for marketing). This caused the swiss cheese effect, where you have coverage on the street, but if you move 2ft into the building, you lose coverage.

Technically, you would have service, but because walls are made of different things, are different thickness and radio waves bounce around, the coverage is weak to none on the other fringes of technical coverages.

Basically it's not WiMax that causes poor coverage, it was Sprint/Clearwire's implementation.

BTW, the nice thing about going from WiMax to WiMax 2 is that it's backwards compatible, mean if you have a WiMax handset, it would still work on a WiMax 2 network. You just won't any benefits of WiMax 2 since your handset is the weakest link.

I too, am ok with what the phone has now. I suppose more ROM would be nice, but unnecessary IMO, unless you are an ultra mega sup app hoarder (or if apps start getting way more bloaty). I would like some form of resolution to this 4G debachle though. Are we dead in the water with Sprint? Will we at least get Wimax expansion (the footprint hasn't moved for quite some time now)? Wimax2? LTE? I'd want to have an answer to the "4G debachle" before I sign another 2 year contract.

The biggest savior for me on this is the fact that we already have Wimax all over where I live. And as we talked about before, my campus as wifi every where so I'm never really in need of the speeds. Out of curiosity, what's the most apps people have had on their phones? I cannot imagine how many I would have to have my phone throw up a memory issue.

As for the 4G debacle and signing a two year contract, I guess the big question is, even if they do LTE or WiMax 2, how long and/or hard is it to roll out? Is it extremely likely if they choose LTE that they will have it rolled out within 2 years?

I probably have 2-3 dozen, which I actually consider to be a lot. I can see it become a legitimate problem for those that like games a lot with the OG EVO, but 4 gigs is literally 4x what the EVO currently offers. I am sure there are people that will just download things that they used once and then never use them again, but also never deleted it.

As far as the LTE question, I'd just like to have an answer as opposed to the months and months of nothing but stagnancy (is that a word?) I will have a year left with Sprint without resigning this summer. If they still don't have plans to do SOMETHING by then I am simply not interested in signing on for another two.

We may (hopefully) see something done with the hardware of this phone in time for its launch.

Let's think about this:
-Sprint supposedly booked however many hours to their presentation at CTIA, but it really only lasted like 20 minutes?
-Sprint barely showed off the EVO 3D at their own presentation.
-It was shared with a bootleg tablet, the EVO View 4G.
-Not one mention of price, but availability was speculated to be around the summer, which could mean any month during the Summer timespan and even any month after that. I can recall Sprint's past on release speculation being somewhat inaccurate.
More points to note: (from the 26 minute hands-on video)
-Sprint rep on more than one occasion said the software development was earlier than you'd think.
-Task manager reported 110MB free and ~500MB total RAM. The EVO 3D supposedly has 1GB of RAM. You can see proof of this around the 18:40 mark.

What I think was, according to the 26 minute video that was posted by another member in the oval office thread, the Sprint rep said the software development was "earlier" than you'd think. Could this also mean the hardware was that early as well? Could it mean that this phone was kind of rushed out to meet CTIA when it really wasn't even ready for that?

I think Sprint quickly threw this phone out there, to get a general consensus and reaction from the people and they will take this reaction into consideration when finalizing the EVO 3D hardware. When compared to the GSM version (which was denied by HTC, but later made official), we're losing 3GB of ROM (from 4GB down to 1GB) according to Sprint specs. In fact, there are so many inconsistencies about what the EVO 3D will have, in pure speculation alone and what's posted on the Sprint/HTC websites. We may be working with a number of production units here. Also, in the 26 minute video when the Sprint rep was showing off the task manager, uhh I'm not sure if any of you noticed, but around 18:40, the free memory remaining was around 110 MB and the total memory available was somewhere in the 500MBs and if i'm not mistaken, that's horribly low in comparison to the supposed 1GB of RAM and pretty much on par with the current EVO.

This may be wishful thinking talking, but I don't think it's too far fetched to assume we may have a different phone when launched.

Remember how the original EVO 4G was spotted having a red speaker grill but production unit was changed to silver? Small difference but worth noting.

Intersting points Freeza. I suppose anything is possible. We will just have to wait and see! All that said, things like RAM/ROM are much easier to change in terms of a final product than some of the other things people are hoping for. Nevertheless, it's definitely not a final product as we cannot yet go out and buy one ourselves, so until then the sky is the limit!

@Freeza, I noticed that the first time when she said that the software was still early that was because she couldn't get the lock screen to work correctly to where it will take you directly into an app. Honestly I don't think she knew how to work the lock screen and just blamed it on early development. Other videos I have seen, users would place their finger on the app then slide it into the circle then it will open the app, she was taking the circle and sliding it over the app which I guess is the opposite way and not the correct way to do it if you want to get into the app right away. Who knows I could be wrong. Also, a lot of her other "we are in early development" comments seemed like it was a way for her to not answer questions she knew the answer too or she just didn't know the answer to them at all. All in all, excellent video and I think this bad boy will come out the first week of june.

I think it did not preform as it was supposed to. In watching other hands on videos I saw people both drag the shortcut icon to the circle and drag the circle to the shortcut icon and both ways worked just fine. Makes me believe that is was intended to work both ways.
Furthermore, she does try to shortcut into the home screen (far left icon) at one point in the video and then at the point in question she tries to launch a different shortcut (far right icon) and it once again launches the home screen.
Just my observations.

Howdy, been following info about e3d. I watched this video and it was hands down best information about e3d. I read else where Sprint is going to announce a 3d suite? The Sprint rep (Hannah) mentioned YT3D in this video. YT3D is that part of suite 3D? The end of the video she mentioned E3D is not going to be locked? This true?

I think you're right. move the app into the circle to launch it directly from lock screen. use the circle to unlock.

Good News!
Memory update. Fortunately new is same as the old. Not old like EVO 4G 512mb RAM. New like as all memory modules on EVO 3D have PRAM (Phase Change Modules) and proceed as if 1gig RAM and 4gig ROM as with old HTC Shooter prototype. Dual channel memory as with the old prototype. M8660 is a-synchronous dual proc and how this will tie into dual channel memory is to be seen. M8660 being a-synchronous will extend battery life.

Yeah this is consistent with all the hands-on videos I saw, though I think it's quite counterintuitive. If you need to move the ring to unlock the phone, why not stick with the same action of moving the ring to highlight the apps?

I'd expect this to get addressed before public release, given how many people are struggling with it at CTIA.

I hope the memory is what is stated on the site at 1GB RAM and 4GB ROM but if you notice in the video posted above The task manager shows vastly different. It shows TOTAL Memory at like 533MB or something around that number.

Also I noticed the mention of Gyroscope in the other thread. Did the phones at the show really have a Gyroscope in them? If so I'm surprised they didn't mention it as one of the features as thats pretty big. Same with NFC(still wanna know if this was on board there and just not discussed for some reason).

It this possible? EVO 3D be able to play games on HDTV sets or be piped into a gaming system? I was day dreaming of the potential of this could be and ran across this video. If you already own a gaming system this would be awesome.

YouTube - The GeForce GTX 590 is here! *Official Release*

I guess a good thing the connector is on the side and not where you normally would holding EVO 3D like a game pad.

I have questions to Bluescreen regarding the 3D in EVO 3D:

1. What is the processor load when recording single 1080p video and
what is the bitstream/sec? - Is single core enough or one needs both
cores? My agenda is if theoretically it is possible to record 3D@1080p?

2. What is the processor load when recording 3D@720p? Each core records
single stream?

3. I noticed from the Hannah presentation that when shooting still pictures
one camera is used. I think one can shoot 3D pics from both cameras
too?

Wirkfi, Excellent question. Being that both MSM8660 and MSM8690 are designed to be a-synchronize proc operation. This mean there is bridge hub that splits the data default request. Resulting in individual cores being request and operating at 50% less demand pending sub routine operations. Answer your question. EVO 3D has twice the Ram and 4X rom of original EVO 4G and caching is handled differently. Resulting in exponentially 1/10th the demand on processor performance and little to non tax on GPU as most tasks will be allocated to memory. Dual channel band on memory has proven to be more than up to task. Single core MSM8660 could easily handle 2d/3d 720p or 1080p with current DDR Silicon on EVO 3D. Engine we use to test CPU loads show a decreased from 35% to 10% on both procs on all simulated test including 720p and 1080p in 2d/3d recording. While streaming via HTC Media Link/DLNA it is less than, resulting in EVO 3D sleeping while streaming. I think this will provide breathing room for the developing community to OC EVO 3D easily to 1.5ghz.
I was most upset as EVO 3D at CTIA were using Alpha copies of software developed from previous "Shooter" EVO 3D device and it showed. EVO 3D ran like pigs and was unable to show it's true potential at CTIA. I could comment on why most reps there did not appear to have a clue, but that is easily seen on all online videos. Hannah, is part of the build out team and make your own conclusions. This remains to be a sour note for me. I am more focused on getting the best EVO product to the fans more than ever before.
