Swype also made the need for a physical keyboard almost obsolete for most people..

This is from someone who first thought that a phisical keyboard would be one of the first 3 considerations in picking my phone. Thank God there were no other choice when it was time for me to move from T-Mo.

Swype has a place, but when it comes to creating and editing documents, swype doesn't cut it. I couldn't imagine using it for business relatedthings in a nomal basis. Plus going back an.d editing is just a dxream with physical cursor keys. I do like it for qucik texts and such but not for anything of length or depth.

Ditto, ditto, ditto.

Esp from people that have had plenty of time with both. I currently have a ~3 week old Epic that I really like, but not as much since the 2.2 update. I actually preferred it on 2.1 I originally picked it for the keyboard and screen but I very rarely use the keyboard anymore. Of the ones that have switched from Epic to EVO or vice versa, what say ye?

Truth is, in this forum, you'll find people who have used both and far prefer the Evo.

In the Epic forum, you'll find people who have used both and far prefer the Epic.

They're both top-notch phones with larger screens - Evo screen is bigger, Epic has a keyboard. Evo cpu is better and has zero GPS issues - Epics fare less well on GPS but seem to have a better graphics processor.

In other words, it's a matter of trade-offs and you can't go far wrong with either - but around here - we recommend the Evo. :) ;)

Welcome to the forums!

I had a movie comparing the two phones, but it was on Beta... so... you know.

Doesn't the sales of the EVO speak for itself? Most people on the street probably doesn't even know what an Epic is or who makes the phone.

I live in a Verizon heavy area and I've yet to meet anyone with an Epic or Evo FWIW. Mostly around here are BB, Droids and Incredibles. There are two people I work with that have the shift.

Same. Most of my friends are on Verizon and AT&T. The strange thing is back when I got my first cell phone in 1999, SprintPCS was THE carrier to be on. They were the undisputed leaders. All of my friends were on Sprint, and we all had similar numbers! Nokia was still the best brand phone to get. BTW, I'm talking about Boston area in case others' experiences are different.

Over the years, other carriers started to get popular, and people moved off Sprint. Then when Sprint bought Nextel and shot themselves in the foot, they earned a reputation for being stupid and providing bad customer service. Now, they are the small company (due to other companies' mergers) and still trying to shake off the bad reputation.

But the Evo at launch was no question the best Android phone out. Not sure how Sprint got that deal, but it's the best thing to ever happen to them. The Epic was released 3 months later and was on par with Evo awesomeness, but it touted a slightly different feature set: physical keyboard, better (subjective) display, faster GPU. But it had drawbacks as well: worse display (subjective), GPS problems, slow updates from Samsung.

Evo wasn't perfect either. The main issues were:

1) screen separation: this was a hardware defect from an early batch where the glue wasn't sticky enough to keep the touchscreen attached to the chassis

2) light leakage: the result of issue 1 above

3) charge ports coming loose and breaking after some use. Also limited to early shipments

4) a little crack forming in the plastic casing around the power button. Most Evos have this crack even though it doesn't seem to affect usability at all.

5) supply shortage. Neither Sprint nor HTC anticipated how popular this phone was going to be, so they ran out early. Meanwhile, people who had these hardware issues above had a hard time getting a replacement. Either there was nothing in stock, or they were getting a refurb, which often still suffered from these problems. We heard stories on these forums where people would be on their 5th (or more) replacement.

6) horrible battery life out of the box.

Most if not all of these issues are no longer relevant as far as I know. Demand for the phone has dropped, so supply was able to catch up somewhat. It's still not plentiful.

Over on the Epic side, they just got the official release of Android 2.2 (Froyo). Evo got it last summer, and like the Evo, there were some growing pains associated with the upgrade. From the looks of the Epic forum, people are still working out the kinks.

Overall Evo satisfaction is very, very high. If you look through some of the posts RE: will you get the Evo 3D, etc, a lot of people have a hard time justifying the upgrade when their existing Evo is so awesome. The other sign of Evo satisfaction is the large percentage of "Evo praise" threads compared to "Evo complaints."

Also you'll see that the Evo is the most active thread for any phone on these forums when launch date is factored in. The support here on the forums is incredible, especially when it comes to "all things root." Big homebrew community with TONS of customizations available.

Clearly I'm biased toward the Evo, but I think I've given valid justifications above for being so.

Had an Epic for 3 weeks and decided to switch to EVO. I originally picked the Epic for the screen and keyboard( and $99) but I rarely used the keyboard so I decided to pick up a bigger plot of land( I downloaded LPP and it seems to give you even more screen). Here are my thoughts after 2 days on the EVO. Hope this helps someone that is deciding. Again, just my opinions:

I really liked the Epic but after the 2.2 update my battery life was horrible and it dropped calls in places that other phones have 'held' calls. And GPS would sometime have me in a different state from where I was.

Screen-Epic's is beautiful just like they say, but the EVO is not too shabby. As a matter of fact unless you have them side by side, the EVO is beautiful too. But movies on the Epic from Samsung Media Hub, oh my. Looked like watching my Plasma.

Wake up/sleep button-I'm one of the few that prefers where the Epic's is. Natural to press.

Call quality-both have great call quality but the EVO gets a stronger signal for me.

Build-The EVO feels more sturdy but the Epic is a quality built phone also. For some reason, even though the EVO feels sturdier, I think the Epic would take a drop better and not just because of the monkey glass. My daughter has a Samsung Rogue and my wife has a Moment and those phones are abused and they are still churning along build wise.

Internet-EVO seems to connect faster esp on 3G.

WiFi-Epic would pick up WiFi better than Evo. Where i work we have wireless but it's on the other side of the plant. The Epic could hold the signal all day but the EVO goes in and out of Wifi.

Speaker- Both are good but I give the Edge to the Epic.

Keyboard-Didnt' care for the Epic's after using BB for a couple of years. Seemed like my fingers had to travel too far. I ended up using the onscreen 95% of the time. Onscreen keyboard for EVO is great.

Form- I prefer the slim EVO but the Epic is pretty slim itself. Had no trouble carrying it in my pocket.

Any questions I'll be glad to help any way I can. I know I read so much on both phones I got sick of reading LOL.

Like I said, I need a phone to be a phone first with minimal hiccups and I think the EVO is just that. Great call signal strength for me and GPS is almost instant lock. So far so good for me. I may just try rooting one day!

You are missing half the fun... without root.
Maybe a new kernel might give you better WiFi lock

FYI.. just confirmed that evo has GORILLA glass too
