Help LG software update (firmware)

I have posted a how to because the Telus instructions are missing a few important steps.

Before you update your smartphone, you need to know your current software version.

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select About phone.
  4. Scroll down to Software version.
  5. If your software version is LG-C710h-V10d you don't need an upgrade.
  6. If you need to upgrade your software, follow the instructions below.

Download the software update to your computer

  1. Launch Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome.
  2. Click LG Welcome to LG Customer Service & Support
  3. Click Mobile Phone support.
  4. Type LGC710H in the Model Name search text field.
  5. Click Search.
  6. Upgrade is available appears in red.
  7. Scroll down to Download LG Mobile Support Tool to PC and click Download.
  8. The File Download window appears. Click Run. NOTE: If this screen does not appear, you will need to disable the pop-up blocker from the browser's Tools menu.
  9. Click Options & Help.
  10. Click Country & Language. From the drop down list, select Canada.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Install USB Driver.
  13. Double-click LGC710H.
  14. The Install Shield Wizard window appears. Select your language preference and click Next.
  15. When the Install Shield Wizard is finished, click OK.
  16. LGMobile update icon appears on your Desktop.
The software update is downloaded to your computer.

Install the software update on your smartphone

  1. Unmount the SD card in settings
  2. Turn off the phone
  3. Remove the SD card, battery and sim card.
  4. Re insert the battery, the USB cable and power up the phone
  5. From your Desktop, double-click the LGMobile update icon.
  6. Click Start Updating (highlighted in red).
The software update is now installed on your smartphone.

What is the benefit of installing this update? I have tried searching and haven't really found anything.

Thanks

I'm not sure. Supposedly, it will fix an international roaming bug. The only change that I noticed was that it crippled the "Battery Use". The Battery Use used to show the amount of battery used by the different applications (but was not very accurate in my opinion). After the update, Battery Use now only shows that the 99% of the battery use is by the Android System; there is no breakdown by applications.

Hi - I have the LG Shine Plus and am with Telus. I have firmware V10c and wanted V10d. I followed the instructions above but the LG update tool initially says I need an update but as it start to apply it, it pops up a message "software update is not supported for this model"? It did recognize the model as C710h??

Anyone else having trouble updating the firmware?

Thanks

I updated awhile ago and i was also wondering what upgraded with this update. So far i only see as you do, that the "battery use" function was pretty much useless. I would like to find out what else it did if anyone knows.

Same here. I still get the odd app breakdown in there (Endomondo, gmaps), but it hasn't been the same.

Apparently android 2.1 has a SMS bug that will send texts to random contacts instead of the intended one, correct me if I'm wrong but apparently this phone has it. I myself haven't noticed it but somewhere I remember seeing someone complaining about the bug. This update MIGHT be a fix to that as well. Is crippling the battery usage screen also their way of fixing the 50% bug?

Hi guys,
Newbie here, I had a question if somebody could help me out here?
I have update the shine plus from Eclair 2.1 to Gingerbread 2.3.3 last week.
Everything seems to be working fine except the language and keyboard option.
Before the update, I used to be able to choose different languages - like English or Chinese, not anymore! When I called Lg customer service, they told me to download the Chinese language keyboard from Google play which I did on my phone, it is still not working? Please help!

Thanks ahead!

You just want the keyboard or the entire phone to be chinese? If it's just the keyboard, I would suggest getting a different keyboard like Gingerbread Keyboard or SwiftKey X that has most of the languages integrated. If you want the entire phone to be in chinese, you might be out of luck unless jparasite manages to fully compile the LG source and adds the languages... But that's a longshot.

I went through all of the steps to the best of my ability for the 2.3 update. Everything went as it was supposed to and a message popped up on the phone "welcome to your new LG C710h. There was a message that it would guide me through data restore process for the Gingerbread upgrade. It only gives me the the option to continue so that's what I do. When I press continue I go into a screen "Data restore: in progress". It gets stuck at 35% Restoring: SMS, and never moves beyond that. I have tried everything that I know to do, as my phone won't let me do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Not much you can do without knowing how to mess around with your phone. Have you tried rebooting it to see if the LG upgrade wizard comes up again?

You might want to try doing a factory reset too, but then you'll lose all your data (Apps + SMS + call log). To do so, shut down the phone, hold Volume down + Home + Power button. It'll clear out data and start up the phone again.
