Root Flashing First Kernel, Advice?

I'm a rooted Droid 1 user running the latest update of CM7 with the CPU set to 125-800 mhz, and for the most part have gotten by using ROM Manager (premium). I wanted to overclock my phone maybe a little bit more, maybe try to get it up to 1 ghz, and I was just wondering what steps should I take to do this? I heard good things about the ChevyNo1 kernels here:

Are these good? If not what else should I look at? I was going to maybe flash the ulv 1 ghz kernel. Can I do this whole process through ROM Manager? If I do download it from my computer and drag it to the sd card, where do I put the file, and should I rename it? Do I put it on there as .zip, or unzip it? Do I have to wipe data and cache before I flash?

And the most important part, I know, is to make a backup! If I do it "manually" through the recovery menu, what steps should I take?

Hate to pester everyone with questions, but I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I go ahead.

Be cautious about the min speed. Many have found a min of 125 to be too slow in that the phone may have issues waking from idle to answer the phone or receive notifications. Most original droids seem to want min speed of 200 or 250.

Flashing kernels is pretty easy. As you posted make a backup before doing anything. Also you do not need to wipe data and cache when flashing a kernel.

1. Download the kernel to your sd card. (It doesn't matter where as long as you know where it is).
- Since your using Clockwork you do not have to rename it or change anything in the name.
2. Enter recovery by powering off the phone then turning it on while holding down the "X" button.
3. When you are in the recovery interface choose to install .zip from sdcard.
4. Select the file from wherever you placed it and approve the flashing of it.
5. After it is flashed, reboot the phone from recovery.
6. When the phone reboots your all set. Now you need to use something like Set CPU or a built in governor in the ROM (if it has one) to set your clock speeds. Most Kernels have a set max and mins.
7. Test drive your new kernel for a few days to make sure it works fine and then make another back up if it is good.

Several additional things.

-There are no "best" kernels. There are kernels that work on your phone and some that won't. What is great for one may be bad for you so it will require some experimentation on your part. Chevy makes a good kernel as does slayher, pete alfonso, raid zero, and P3. Try the ones you like with the different voltages and see what works.

If your phone gets stuck at the Motorola symbol that is a bootloop and means your phone did not like your kernel. Don't panic, simply re-enter recovery and reflash your backup. This is why you need to be familiar with how to use the recovery and not always going through ROM Manager to flash things. Hope this helps and ask any questions you might have.

When I DL the kernel, it comes up as "xxx.zip.". Should I open this file and drag one of those files onto the sd card? Or should I drag the .zip file onto the sd card?

Thanks for the help! Id really like to get used to doing things the old fashioned way. Rom manager makes things easy, but it's probably better to be comfortable with the recovery menu.

Do not open it. Just put the whole thing onto your sdcard and flash the whole thing. It is all set up to go when you download it.

I'm assuming that I tinker with the CPU settings the same way that I did previously, by going to settings-> CyanogenMod settings-> Performance -> CPU Settings, correct? Max frequency now has 1000 MHz available (when it wasn't available before).

That sounds right. I am not using CM but what you posted would be correct. If you ever use a rom without a built in governor like that you can use SetCPU which is in the market.. Also congrats on the kernel.

I'm trying to flash prime's deprimed kernel onto my Droid, but my phone won't stay in recovery. It keeps rebooting before I can even choose "choose .zip from sd card." Does my phone not like the kernel or is there a problem somewhere? Should I move on and try something else? Thanks!

edit- Nevermind, I tried again. I deleted the .zip from my sd card and reloaded it. Flashed without a hitch!
