Pda net, easy tether, and other non-root requiring tethering apps are now being censored on Verizon wireless. It has been that way for a few months. The update version has nothing to do with it. The Droid X build.prop file is read by the Android Market and the apps are blocked based on that. (For proof, check the web version of the Market and you will find the apps, but it won't let you install them). Root-required tether apps don't seem to be blocked (yet at least)
I have used Easytether mostly. But I had luck with Barnicle WiFi Tether on a previous rooted phone. It was nice because it turns your phone into a wireless router. (Easytether is wired only) But Barnicle did use a significant chunk of battery when it was on.
Exactly! Gingerbread also spies on root. Calls it "tampering".
BTW helpful would be the tethering patch that allows using the stock hotspot app in gingerbread.
I'll be sticking with Froyo until a clean gingerbread can be obtained! Google spies on everything including the contents of your email. It's why the government doesn't use it and instead sticks with Exchange. Open your email that talks about truck parts and get a bunch of ads from google about auto parts.
I just went to the market on my VZW Droid X and downloaded easytether and android tether lite without any issues (don't plan on keeping them, so didn't spring for the paid versions). Pdanet does appear to be blocked, but there is a note there with instructions on how to go to their website and side load it. Wireless tether for root users no longer appears in any form though.
