Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

broke tap feature to correct in swype
removed options when pressing power key to silence turn off mobile etc
changed font on some screens
broke Netlix
only cut paste options when highlighting instead of cut paste search share etc.

Seriously if I could get rid of it I would.

I echo your sentiments. I would like to go back.. Apps I daily use being broken and possibly not usable again is a killer. Battery life improvement is nice but I have spares, and the "speed" everyone is talking about... my phone wasn't really sluggish beforehand. These cosmetic changes aren't worth what I've lost at this point.

For those in dire straights -

Recycling router when connect, disconnect, connect - tends to work a great deal of the time.

Don't overlook that having cache areas that are tangled are the norm after updates.

The advice in the how-to-fix-Froyo thread in Support & Troubleshooting still applies.

Your UK cousins who went through these problems on their Desire HD GB updates recently used those instructions, got good results.

Really? That makes me wonder what % of us are having the issue.

Curses spoke to early. Netflix boots up just fine and the app works, but video is now failing to play. Foiled by Gingerbread dang. Hopefully 2.3.4 is not far behind to remedy this maybe?

Speed improvement is worth holding on to this update though. I am sure an update will be on the market to remedy this shortly. (hopefully) Other than Netflix no issues so far.

dag... i just turned it off for the first time since the update.. it did shut off faster than pre update..

but DAG... i pressed the power button.. i vibrated... the sprint cheesy logo STARTED but a half second later the blasted home screen was up! LOL... i could not even swallow my spit that fast...

this update really breathed new life into this tired old june 2010 launch day version 2 evo...

I wonder if the phone is really shutting off, or perhaps just "sleeping" of some sort, as you dont see the white HTC EVO 4g Splash screen come up....(not to be confused with the yellow 4g splash animation that follows)

My LED doesn't blink anymore with new text messages, even after I double check the settings. Using handcent app

I found something new:

Go to -

Menu - Settings - Battery - Battery Use

There is now a 'graph' up top that you can click on and shows your battery usage

I don't see Battery or Battery use in the settings area.

-EDIT-
Proper path is Menu>Settings>About Phone>Battery>Battery Use

Thing is, this isn't new to me.

Regarding the notifications and Handscent, I couldn't turn off the stock app's notifications either (apparantly there is a way, I didn't research too much), but what you can do is turn off Handscent's notifications. When the stock notification comes up, the phone should ask you what application you want to use, and from there, you can tell it to always use Handscent. The only downside to this is that for whatever reason, when there are multiple text notifications, it will open with the stock app instead of Handscent in my experience.

I have never had that experience & I have been using Handcent since my Hero due to the built in app having a bug at release.

From inside the Built in Text app Menu-settings-unclick notifications
To turn off Auto Retrieve Menu-settings-unclick Auto-retrieve

Should solve that issue.

As a general troubleshooting tip:

for a particular app that's not behaving properly, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, choose the app, and clear the cache and data for that app. It means you may lose your settings for that app, but manually set them up again and see if that fixes things.

This may or may not resolve your issue, but it's always a good first step in troubleshooting any issue.

Has anyone tried this with the apps that are not working?

The phone is not shutting off. It's dumping the memory to the NAND chip and then hibernating. This is exactly what your Windows PC does when you tell it to hibernate.

Fast boot is cool, and since there is also a "restart" option that shuts the phone down properly, I'm tempted to leave this option enabled should I ever want to use it, however in the settings menu, the fact boot option says "disable to use some market apps" and I wonder what functionality I am losing by leaving it turned on.

I honestly can't think of a reason I would hibernate my phone. The only time I ever turn it off is to reboot it, so if there is some downside to the fast boot option, I'll leave it off, even if it is a neat party trick.

Not a whole lot of visual stuff, it's considered an "under the hood" update.

I think it's worth it.
It's supposed to make your phone faster (Which I've noticed!)
Better battery life (I'm not sure yet.)

Just a quick word of advice for anyone who uses the stock Alarm app...you have to re-enter your alarms after the update! Just playing with mine and realized the alarms I had set were all gone. I don't recall this happening with the Froyo update, but perhaps it did.

Otherwise, so far so good with my update.
