Where to go from Desire?

Wife need a new phone, thought I pass on the Desire -

I think the Desire is great and I'm only interested in Android phones.

What would be a real upgrade from the Desire?

Personally I'd go for the GSII (it's more powerful and specwise a better phone)

but depending on what type of person your wife is, she might prefer the Sensation because it almost like a DesirePro. It's bigger, better and it's got Sense 3.0.

I would give her the Desire - she prefers a smaller phone.
I'm looking for the upgrade for myself.

GSII. All the way. The thing's a beast and it's future proof as your gonna get. Won't be outdated this time next year.

What about storage? That is literally the only reason why I upgraded. Everything else is perfectly, more than capable, but no storage left = no more apps.

You can root your phone to enable A2SD. I dont have any issues with storage now....

Same here. After rooting and using a few tricks, the internal storage is no longer an issue.

I don't think SGS2 or Sensation is the good phone to give to your wife.
If she was happy with Desire, then simply give here Desire S. It is the same size and more snappy.

GS2. Let's do a mini-comparison.

Forgetting specs for the moment because they're all gonna be top end, but the UI and OS is where everything changes.

iOS 5 could have twitter integration, widgets and a new notifications system...Android has been pioneering in widgets and notifications for a LONG TIME NOW!!!

This time next year, the GSII will not be the best, but it will certainly be able to keep up with everything you throw at it.
The iPhone 5 will be outdated purposely because that's how Apple work to force you to get the iPhone 6. Not to mention Android is the way to go because Android is heavily backed by Nvidia, the pioneering company in graphics. Android devices will pioneer in quad-core tech. Apple will never use Nvidia and so they're going to have to play catch-up to Android by making an A6 next year which will probably be quad-core...but it probably won't be as good as Nvidia's because they created the thing and so by next year, I'm sure they're gonna have a more optimised version of it.

The Desire had a very good run in that position.

Had a play with a Sensation this weekend. Marginally large for me, but much better than the HD, even if only couple of mm narrower. Liked the build and screen resolution, and the newer Sense has more bells & whistles than Desire version. If you like Sense it could be a good choice.

Compared with my amoled the blacks were a bit grey. Battery life was worse, but it was only a week old, so likely not fully conditioned yet, and I can no longer remember what an untweaked Desire is like. For me the inability to really mod it would be the real problem, but if you aren't concerned with that it might be worth a look.

I've not had a chance to have a similar play with the SGSII, so cannot comment on that. Does look very appealing on paper though.

Interesting. Engadget did a review on Sensation, and they said the battery life was extremely impressive.

I tend to agree more with you though, seeing that the phone's features indicate theoretically a short battery life (high resolution large display and relatively low capacity battery).

Well I relied more on the owner for battery life, but he'd used more than half by 11:30 this morning, and I'd really struggle to use that much that quickly (except perhaps by solidly gaming all morning) - he had been doing some browsing & downloading, and signal not brilliant, but it wasn't a great result.

Another review (techradar I think) said they had found battery life poor enough that they were trying to get a second unit to check they didn't just have a dud to review. Might be worth checking more reviews to see what the consensus is.

Edit: should add that the owner is new to android, so may not have optimised things like polling/sync frequencies yet. I should check with him on this.

If the iPhones screen gets larger like maybe around 4 inches, they improve battery life to say 8 hours since the battery is not removable and also improve the call quality issues I might actually consider it. But I would really miss my led notifications, flash browser and free turn by turn. I would definitely consider the sensation or the galaxy 2 if they came to my carrier. I don't like paying full price for my phone and not getting full support like I had to do with my desire. My carrier (rogers) doesnt get any good android phones.

It could just be my memory, but I could swear I remember seeing it at the top for a long time!

I doubt the iPhone Screen will get larger, most users would be happy with that size and for anything bigger they have the iPad now, plus all they've really done is keep up with the market since the 3G, there was nothing ground breaking about the iPhone 4 to me, Yeah it is a good phone but there is a lot wrong with it too, mostly the price then there is the issue of I think everyone has or knows someone who has broken an iPhone screen, and then Apple have the bright idea of putting a second glass panel in the back. The reason iPhone does well is because it's Apple selling it, the same people that can convince you to drop three grand on a desktop that you could do with half that money on a PC and that for some reason your mum needs and iPad when really she's going to use it for the free version of FruitNinja and read a couple of books on it before she realises she got an expensive digital photo frame for mothers day. I personally think Android is exactly what the market needed, open source software just gets better and better because Google have basically said okay guys and gals heres what we've got, what do you think we can do from here and they wait a few weeks and months and they've got thousands of developers tinkering and modding and then they reap what they've sewn which is all the best bits for the next update and it's what the users want too because it's by the users.

AMEN! Completely agree there! Adding on, Google generally tend to release the tech, as soon as they can, speeding up the innovation and development cycle. Apple tend to hold back the technology, so they can release it in increments, but gain more profit.

Yeah, I hate how you know Apple could have released tech on their latest model but chose not to for monetary reasons, I want updates damn it and I want them now not when you decide to make the masses genuinely believe they need your next damn model, and even with the iphone 4, what the hell happened there, lets make a square edged phone with a major reception flaw and two fragile glass screens. and to go back further the 3GS early white models had a massive flaw in the plastic housing, constantly getting fractures and chips, but I realised I've gone off topic and on to iphone bashing, what I meant to say was, I'd get the SGS2 hands down, I'm impressed but not enough to trade in my 4 month old desire for one just yet, I think by the time my desire contract is out that will be old tech though, haha

Nope. Samsung have confirmed that it will be released in the first half of next year. But let's be honest, it's probably going to be released this time next year because there'll be some manufacturing delay or something like that - let alone the time it'll take to come to your country or your carrier.

So you've got a long time before the GSII is out dated by it's successor. And furthermore the GSII has been made very future proof. Solid build quality and mainly the 1GB of RAM...I really don't see any phones going above 1GB (seeing as other equal flagship phones don't even have 1GB of RAM yet).

As time progresses apps will require more power, which I am pretty sure a dual core 1.2Ghz (which Android hasn't even been optimised for YET) will be able to handle it. And unlike other flagship phones atm, I think 1GB will still enable you to be running fast and smooth this time next year. Also after the (US failure of updates/carrier updates) for the original Galaxy S, it's served as a bit of a wake up call for Samsung to improve their updates and their customer service. This will also need to improve seeing as they've kinda announced they're going to be going head to head against Apple, in the phone market.

Imo the next iPhone is a real contender after the iOS 5 announcement.

I'll wait and see what the final product is like before getting "suckered in" completely because I know how good Apple are at advertising But there's a lot of cool new features that Google needs to steal borrow.
