Root Newbie Question/Help

I am not new to Android but I am new to rooting. I've always been told that there is no such thing as a stupid question if you need help, and I do need help.
Received a used Droid X that is running 2.3.3 4.5.595. When I was restoring my apps it was either MyBackup Pro or Mobile Defense that showed a box saying I had root access. I was not aware that the phone had been rooted (not complaining) but (1) how can I confirm that it is, in fact, rooted; (2) assuming it is rooted, what do I do next; and (3) if it is rooted should I update to 4.5.596????
Any help, suggestions and guidance would be appreciated.

Well if your running .595 your definitely rooted since that was a leaked version.

If it was me, I would SBF back to .340 stock, so it will be nice and fresh..

Then you can update to .596 manually or let the OTA do its thing depending on whether you want to keep root or not.

Look here to get familiar with everything.. (rooting, SBFing, ROMs, Themes, etc..)

If you have the .12p baseband already then you can go ahead and flash the new OTA straight over it if you didn't want to SBF. But it sounds like you didn't do this stuff yourself since you said you received it like that already on .595. So I would back up what cjcross said and go ahead and SBF so you start from a clean slate.

No worries my friend. your droid is not dead. Use the Linux method and boot your phone into bootloader mode by holding down the camera key+ down volume key+power key. When you see the quick flash let go of the buttons. You will be in bootloader mode.

Then follow the directions for using the Linux cd and you will be good to go my friend.

The Linux method can be found on the link that cross provided you (root guide). Here is a direct link with all instructions provided,

http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/346016-creating-bootable-linux-cd-soley-sbf-headache-free.html

Follow the directions to the letter and you will be amazed at how easy it is.

EDIT: Aggie, can you tell me what the most commonly used Linux and where to get it from? i'm gonna grab me a small hard drive and throw Linux on it just to do things like this that are easily done through Linux.

Ubuntu is by far the most popular linux distribution. Fedora is up there but I would go with ubuntu if you really just want something basic. And the question in my status is there for the same reason as the dog.

Speedy, Glad you were able to get everything done! Hold on to that CD!!

So, if I understand correctly, that restore would bring me back to .595 rather than the .596 which I now have. If that's the case, I would have to root from scratch -- following all of the very good advice on this forum (absolutely no sarcasm intended -- I just couldn't come up with better wording). As a side note -- I've always recognized the value of particular forums, and all of you, with your responses and advice have reinforced that.

If you flash your old backup from when you were just running 595 then yes it will put you back to 595. What you want to do is after you get your 596 up and running nice and clean create another backup. Then put your themes or roms in. So if anything goes screwy on you, you can restore that nice fresh copy of 596.
