Why cant I get Android 3.1 on my HTC Desire.

Cupcake 1.6
Doughnut 2.0
Eclair 2.1
Frozen Yogurt 2.2
Gingerbread 2.3
Honeycomb 3.0

Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread is the latest OS from Google for phones.
Android 3.1 is the latest announced iteration of Honeycomb optimized for tablets.

Updates for carrier subsidized phones come from the carrier through the handset manufacturer. The Desire eventually should get Gingerbread, but it takes time for HTC and your carrier to modify the official release so it works with your phone.

Well Android 3.0/3.1 is called Honeycomb and its a tablet OS, so it wasn't built for phones. The next newest version for phones after Android 2.2 Froyo, is Android 2.3 Gingerbread... which would be the next OS that you would be hoping to get. I did hear that HTC is trying to find a way to bring 2.3 Gingerbread to Desire owners, but there's a bit of a complication... they're running into a shortage of memory for the OS to run well and not ruin the experience for the users, but I do remember seeing an article that said they are working on it.

Not sure if the Desire will get Gingerbread, but I know HTC is working on GB for the Desire HD, and I have the Inspire and I got a feelin the inspire will. Compare the specs of the Desire and Desire HD? That may give you an idea of if your Desire is capable of running GB. I know for a fact Honeycomb will not be on a phone. Ice Cream Sandwich will be out later this yr tho, maybe they'd get some of those features on your phone later? Just an idea.

Yeah, this is one of the articles (there are probably loads more).

There was massive uproar because they said it wasn't going to happen, then came out a couple of days later and said it would.

The Desire HD got GB 2-3 months ago. And as someone else stated, HTC have said that the Desire will get the update since their earlier statement that the Desire would NOT get GB led to quite the uproar. :p Can take some time though, as the Desire isn't the powerhouse it used to be. I'm not even sure how they'll even pull it off. :p
