Root Clockwork/Amon RA PC36IMG Files

Hello, new user here. I've successfully rooted my HTC EVO 4G a while back. I would like to upgrade to SW ver. 3.70, but had some reserves doing so. I've read the entire 'ROOTING For Dummies' thread posted, and downloaded the RUU Supersonic files from XDA-Developers. So far, I can't get the update to run.

Anyway, I currently have ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5. My current software version is 3.26.651.6. Can I just download the 'Stock Recovery 3.70.651.1 (Added 01/18/2011)' posted by the OP and run the flash from HBOOT? Also, my HBOOT is 0.93.0000 and my RADIO is 2.15.00.07.28.

Any info is appreciated. THANKS!

Are you trying to unrooted and update or are you just trying to get to updated software?

If you are wanting to stay rooted but upgrade to the newer radios and latest OTA version, Sprint Lover's would be the best bet to do it in one shot. Otherwise you would need to flash the radios and a rom based on the 3.70 release. It is not necessary to unroot or run an RUU to get the latest updates.

Thank you for the quick response, Xtremedays!! I was ONE-CLICK away from downloading the Sprint Lover ROM. Here is the reason why. When I was reading the 'ROOTING For Dummies'... I came across the following message:

REASONS WHY NOT TO UPDATE HBOOT
- Any NANDROID backups made before updating HBoot will be useless on a different HBoot version
- HBoot is typically upgraded for various debugging differences, etc., but a primary reason is to patch security exploits (i.e. THE WAY WE ROOT. Why would you want to upgrade to an HBoot designed to keep out root. Yes, each one gets root eventually, but I think my point stands.)
Is there reason for me to be concerned?

Xtremedays, thank you very much for the help!

If for some reason you accepted on OTA update, it would update your hboot and thus make all of your nandroid backups on your previous hboot useless. It would also potentially unroot your phone and you would have to wait weeks possibly months for an updated root exploit to be found. The fact that you are rooted now would make an OTA update unlikely to successfully flash. Before the OTA updates come out there are always various roms out due to leaked version of the final OTA release so those that are rooted usually have the new software before the stock phones do.

If you intend to stay rooted, my suggestion would be:
1) Switch your recovery to either AmonRA 2.3(preferred) or Clockwork 2.6.0.1

2) Flash either Sprint Lover's as it includes the newest radios or flash a custom rom and the radios to bring you to current software and radio levels.

It is not necessary to unroot or accept OTA updates to make your phone current

wow that thread went on and on..... In the first part you guys were talking about posting all the info regarding recovory.img's and how to flash them.. I think it is a great idea cauzz I know you azbam helped me a lot through some threads I started and it wasn't till I chatted back and forth with you and ocncnbraz ( know I got his user name wrong but you probably know who I am talking about) that I finely started understanding everything... so if a noob ( like I still am)comes to "all things root" they have your brain (sorta speck) in plane english.... I wish I had been on this path after you posted all that you talked about posting in the begining.... thanks agin for your guys expertise and help..
when I was reading the thread you mentioned about the files not needed when you do a nandroid and mentioned partitioning your SD card...I was at the time doing a nandroid because I found out yesterday that clock work and amand ra are not compatible ( more info to include on your new sticky)( very important info I have been playing around with new alterations thinking I could always go back to the nandroid I did when I flashed my first rom). So I knew I needed to do a new nandroid being that I just switched 2 weeks ago from clockwork2.5 to Amond Ra....When it askes you the MB question what mega bite's should I select..... Finely got to my question

About to start work on a new section for ClockworkMod and Amon_RA Recoveries. A how-to for Recoveries.

Please please do this, or if it's already been done can you link us? Ive been using clockwork 2.6 and have never had any problems, but everyone recommends RA. I'd like to try it i just need a how to on how to use it.

You use it the same way as Clockwork Mod. The only real difference that I am aware of other than the wiping issues is that Amon RA does not back up everything by default. There are three things selected and you can choose the others based on what you need to back up. Got here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html and download the PC36IMG file for Amon RA 2.3. Follow the instructions there and you will be using it in no time. If you switch over, make sure to make a new backup after you flash it as the ones you have in CWM will not work in Amon.

Does hboot say you have s-off? You have a custom recovery then? Do you have a super user app? Go to terminal emulator and enter su should change from $ to #. If all the above is correct go to tb and hit problems and let it install busy box...

You were able to flash a different ROM, though? Okay, let's start with this:

1) Turn the phone off then turn it back on while pressing and holding volume down. Do you see S-ON or S-OFF?
2) You say you have Clockwork. Did you flash that yourself (you'd have to have gotten S-OFF at least) or did unrevoked get that far?
3) What ROM are you on now? Were you actually able to flash mikfroyo?
4) If yes to 3, you definitely have a rooted ROM, but just for the heck of it, install the terminal emulator from the market (if you don't already have it). Open it, and type "su" without quotes. The prompt will change from $ to # if you have superuser permissions in your ROM..

EDIT: evomattnc beat me to it, and remembered what I forgot - busybox :)

What does clockwork and amon-ra do? What is their purpose? I am going to root my EVO as soon as the new stock GB can be rooted. In the meantime, a friend of mine's EVO is still at FROYO and is rooted. We played around with flashing a ROM last night, had some issues but we've got some new things to try today. Is this something we need to include?

both cwm and amon ra are custom recoveries without them you will not be able to flash custom roms. they are sort of a mini os for your phone. depending on the version of clockwork mod you have will determine what you can flash. clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 uses a script called edify. most flashable .zips use a script called amend. there are two recoveries that can use both scripts and they are: clockwork mod 2.6 and amon ra 2.3. i highly recommend amon ra 2.3 as it tends to do a better job at wiping then cwm.

also i would recommend that you flash everything through recovery and not use rom manager as it tends to be buggy. it never really wipes very well creating a lot of issues for most people. get to know your recovery cause there maybe a time when you cant boot up and all you have is your recovery. knowing what to do from there may save your phone.

hope that helps.

Thanks this does help alot! So much to learn. My friend's EVO was already rooted by someone else, that's why I knew very little about the original process used to root her phone. But we did get cyanogenmod 7 and gapps flashed to it yesterday and it is awesome. She is using cwm 3.0.0.5 (which I've seen on this forum is required to flash cgm7). She is having a blast with her 'new phone' now. I can't wait to get mine rooted. Gotta wait for them to exploit the new hboot :(
