Multiple Phone Numbers for Same person - How do you handle?

I have several contacts in my phone where I have multiple phone numbers but the location does not always match up with Google choices (MOBILE, WORK, HOME etc) Or in the case of a store like Costco, a different number for each department - Main, Pizza, Pharmacy etc. On my Palm I just used to put initials next to the number to remind me which was which, but that does not work on the Droid - it would not call the number with extra letters. Other than putting the information in my notes, has anyone found a work around? Ideally, I would like to change the words, WORK, HOME, MOBILE, etc to better reflect the ownership and location of that particular number. But that seems highly unlikely since it's connected to Google Contacts. Just wondering how others handle multiple numbers besides a totally different entry, or by adding the info in notes.

You can make a custom label for each number. Just go into the contact and edit it, where you are selecting mobile, work, etc, there is an option for custom at the bottom of that list.

edit: You can only do this on the phone directly. Your custom label will show up in google.com/contacts or gmail but it doesn't look like you can make a custom label anywhere but the phone.

YES! That's EXACTLY what I was trying to do. Thanks milrtime83 for the added info that it had to be done on the phone.

Joe.. will keep in mind that search might be off, but as yet, have never filtered like that.

And now.. I can dial any Nordstrom in So Cal by name! :p Perfect!!

I write them down on little pieces of paper and keep them in my pockets.

They kept ending up in the wash! :p

On a similar note...

I had never entered data on the phone.. always used my computer so never would have found this. But while I was changing these designations, I noticed that the address field ON THE PHONE has address, city and zip as separate entries. Only a single entry on the computer. Is there some pressing reason I need to edit ALL my addresses on the phone and enter by city and zip too? Again, why the difference from phone to computer application. Google.. you're messing with my OCD - I want my data neat!

Oh yeah, this drives me nuts. I periodically need to export my contacts for a mailing list, and having them in two formats is maddening. Google needs to sharpen up their contacts management to keep the business and OCD crowd happy.
