Help Help-Wifi has flipped out

I'm pretty much a noobie and am not very saavy on all the lingo and such so please be gentle. I am rooted but simply followed a great YouTube video last January when I got my NC. I'll do my best to explain my issue so it makes sense.

The problem started about 2 weeks ago and I'm pretty sure I know "why" but have no idea on the "how" for fixing it. First, I need to give a bit of background info, so bear with me.

Even though I rooted my NC myself, I was too chicken to try it on my Samsung Fascinate phone and never really felt the need. I was getting a Clear Protector and the guy said I could use my phone as a tether if I'm somewhere without wifi. I thought cool, let's do it. I (gasp) let him (I've learned a hard lesson) root my phone (wasted $30) and set up the tethering. It worked and thought I was good to go.

Well...ever since he did whatever it was he did, I cannot stay connected to my wifi at home. Every time it goes to sleep or its been on for a while, I have to turn of wifi then turn it on again for it to find my network. It shows its "Not in range, remembered" until I do this. I never had this problem before. If I was home, I was connected. Period. Also, when in Settings -->Wireless it doesn't see any secured networks unti I've turned it on again. Then it sees the neighbors wireless networks and connects to mine.

I went back to the store and the guy said he could undo what he did but he'd have to talk to another guy he called when he set it up to be sure he undid the right thing. Um, I said not to worry about it and jetted out of there.

And yeah, it messed up my phone as well, and I've spent days getting it back on track. Hard lesson learned.

Sounds like the guy installed a "fixed" file to allow your rooted NC to connect to an AdHoc network, which is how you were tethering with your phone. Did you let him set up anything on the Nook? The symptoms you describe are exactly what happens when this file is in use.

This problem has long since been fixed in recent releases of custom ROMs, but I don't think there is a fix for Nooks running stock rooted software. I'll see if I can dig up the information for you on how to switch back to the regular file, but if you rely on the tethering with your phone, you're better off resetting the wifi every time. There's nothing wrong with your device otherwise.

WOW! Quick response...thank you. Good to know my NC isn't messed up.

I' really like to learn more about custom ROMS, flashing, etc to make the most of a rooted device. I've done quite a bit of reading but there is SO much information out there that I don't know where to start.

I've read that Gingerbread is optimal for the NC. How can I get that going? I'd like to watch Netflix from my Nook and think I need Gingerbread to do so.

PS: I have a Mac - and love it - so I'd need info for OS X. It must be out there somewhere because its how I rooted in January.

In reality, the only thing you need to do from the computer side is create bootable SD cards, easily done from OS X's *nix terminal. You'll need to decide if you want to boot Gingerbread from the SD card or the internal storage. Then, you'll need to pick which version you want to use. Gingerbread is only the core OS, there are several builds of Gingerbread that you can use, my favorite being Cyanogenmod7.
