[MAJOR SOLUTION] Fix your slow 3g speeds:EVO4g

Updated PRL and then profile, DL speed is now .85 avg but UL is still .1--
The # now says it is an invalid code.

You might be able to download another epst.apk file. I posted earlier on how to update your prl and the link is there for an older epst file. Not sure if it will overwrite the current file you have though without being rooted, since you have to give it permissions with Root explorer for it to overwrite it. Never tried it on a unrooted phone before.

Maybe do a battery pull also, might just need a good reset.

Also the file is in system/app directory when you look for it in root explorer.

I've tried this a couple of times now. No effect. There are times my data will go from .02 up to 1.9 and back between 3 tests. At work I get around .06. I'm assuming this is the premium data that my $10 is going to? 4G here in Vegas seems to be a joke. Says I'm in a 4g area where I live. My phone begs to differ. I use WiFi in my apt. I've thought about taking the phone in, but if they replace that will start a whole new mess. "here's you replacement, the person before you dumped it in the ocean, but we dried it off, you should be fine". So, crap 3G, no 4G, and I can't flash new radios since I'm not rooted. Didn't feel the need to root, phone was great prior to the update mess. OK, done venting now. Later. Forgot, I've also down 2 factory resets and countless battery pulls.

New phone, countless prl updates, downgrades, updated radio, went back forth from stock sense rom (rooted) to Fresh sense rom back to C7. Still same crappy speeds at home, now even at work here speeds used to be 1 -2 mb consistantly now lucky to get .5 on a good day. My feeling is Sprint is either throttling me somehow. I get alot of international data roaming and 1x where i used to get great service. Anyone else having these issues?

Don't know if this might help some people but this is something I did and the versions of what software, rom, prl etc. I have now.

After trying 3 different evo's, one which actually started out with great data speeds then 2 hours later went to crap. I finally decided to stay with a sense rom so no going back and forth to change settings via the EPST.

Here is what I have on my phone now and tested several times at the speakeasy.net speedtest and was getting anywhere from 1.5 - 2 mbs speeds consistantly and with the fix on here also.

I am running Synergy (RC1)
Baseband (radio) 2.15.00.05.02
Kernel Version 2.6.35.10-gc0a661b HTC-kernal@and 18-2 #1 (this was with the rom)
Android Version 2.3.3
Software# 4.24.651.1
PRI# 1.90_003
PRL# 60679
NV# 1.90_003

Couple other things I notice comparing the 2 thru ##DATA# and going to advanced settings or data profile:

Under the setting Roam Orig my phone had EVRC the newly activated phone had voice 13k. I changed my old phone to setting of voice 13k.

Under the setting SPI MN-AAA my old phone was set to 0 the newly activated phone was set to 4D2. I set mine on my old phone to 4D2.

Now not sure if my old phone since it was not in service and I activated the new phone that these settings change on the old phone or not, but so far my phone with the fix on here and setting everything that I mentioned above, yesterday I was getting .3 -.5 if lucky here at my work location and now 1.5 -2 here. At home I wasnt doing any better than .5 which I think is a tower issue where I live.

The reason I did it all this way is the 2nd phone I got from Sprint was fast and compared all of its settings with mine and figured it was worth a shot to see if it would work for my phone.

The sense Rom I have so far is much faster than CM7 and I love the little extra things it has, very happy with it.

Don't waste your time taking the phone in... I have the exact same issues. The data speeds used to be quite decent here, but something has happened in the last month or two, and their data speeds in the valley are complete garbage now... 3G speeds are generally 50-250kb all over the valley, and the 4G um, works OK sometimes if you are outside (and don't move). Sprint really has some nerve charging an extra $10 for this "premium" data. I have been with Sprint for 12 years, and am finally ready to jump ship. Between their garbage data and the state the last update left my EVO, I can't see why I should put up with this anymore...

Same feeling here. I called and complained several times how they can charge for a service they cannot provide. They say it isnt the speeds its the phone because it is a "Smart Phone" that is always online. I cannot get 4g here but I bet when we do it will be lucky to get the 3g speeds they cannot provide now. When I was in Pittsburgh for a day I was in 4G coverage and all it would top out at was 3mb and I thought they advertised that it could do 10? Not sure if that is right though.

Oh if you complain enough you might get $35 off your bill, I did! The squeaky wheel gets the grease LOL!! But sometimes not where you want it!

The $10 fee is not a 4g fee (covered before)

If you complain enough about not receiving a data signal you *may* get a credit of the $10 for a while ..but it's unlikely.

It's now 13 months and I still do not get 3g at my work address...confirmed 3 towers out and one blackout area with no towers...

No fix from sprint.

I just use Verizon PRL's and avg 1.5 down and up ...let them cancel me...I'll just go to one of the other carriers

I won't dispute what the 10 is for, just I exepect my premium data to arrive at a rate just a bit higher than 14.4 dial up. Guess thier sales dept should quit writing checks thier network can't cover. It only makes sense that if you sell tons of people unlimited plans, your gonna run out of bandwith in a hurry. I wouldn't be nearly as upset if I hadn't spent Nov, Dec, and Jan reaserching phones, plans, carriers, etc just so that we didn't sign a 2 year contract and get screwed. Alot of good that did me.

So is the 1.5 down and up what you get at your work location with the verizon PRL? If so I would like to try this myself and maybe this will work for me here at home. Recommendations on where to get the Verizon PRL's?

Be careful, you only have 350MB/month while roaming.

Not true...also covered previously...SOME have the 350mb/month while roaming...not everyone. Basically newer customers are affected by that cap, not pre existing customers. Trust me...I have been well over 5gb of roaming data for more than 3 months in a row now

After rooting my phone and flashing a new ROM (Mik, I believe, I'm using, but I forget, to be honest) my 3G speeds TANKED! I found this thread, followed the instructions, and it worked. So, yay! Thank you for that.

But, that was a month ago. Yesterday and today, I've noticed my speeds are AWFUL again. Like, about 200kbps down and 50kbps up. I mean, just awful - the way they were when I first rooted/flashed. So, I tried these steps again. And again. And again.

Nothing. Speeds still totally suck! :(

I did notice that I'm using PRL 60679, and no amount of updating changes that. Every time I update, it's still 60679. That was only mentioned once in this thread, but not in any detail. The original post says PRL should be 60677 or 60678. Could that be the problem? Do I need one of those PRLs? And if so, how/where can I get that?

I don't know what to do. Please help! Thank you.

PS: 4G is great. This problem is only affecting 3G.

I am not doing EXACTLY as instructed, because one step is not happening. What I've done, precisely, is this...

First, update PRL. It never changes from 60679, but I keep doing it anyway.

Then, go into ##DATA# > Data Profile > Restore.

Then, the phone says it will reboot in 10 seconds, but it never does. Press OK, and it still doesn't. So I've tried rebooting at this step by holding down power and selecting restart; I've tried holding down power and powering off; and I've tried pulling the battery. In any case, I manually restart.

After restart, I guess that's when the Hands Free Activation should appear? ...but it never does. The phone just boots up normally, except my data network doesn't work.

So I do a Profile Update.

Then I test my speeds, and they're right back in the 200kbps range, as if nothing happened.

What is the importance of the Hands Free Activation step, as opposed to clicking Update Profile myself? How can I force a Hands Free Activation?

And it's definitely not the area. 3G coverage here was always great before I rooted/flashed, and it was even great here last month after following these directions last time. Last time, the Hands Free Activation screen DID appear. I don't know why it isn't appearing this time! :(

ok so...like I said...not all users can be charged for excessive roaming data

BUT

Wanted update...got my termination letter just minutes ago in today's mail...

Contract will be terminated, effective August 2nd, ETF waived.

:D

roughly 5-8 months. Can't remember exactly when I started haha. I even did half and half months.

Now I have to figure out if I want to switch to Verizon or add a line on Veronica's ATT plan....hrmmmmmmmmm and then I gots to pick a phone

so...just as all the warnings were given before ...ig you use verizon's towers you CAN be terminated. In my case this was the plan, I am tired of spotty 4g and 3g coverage and it was the easiest way to get out of my contract :p

So does this work to get out of a contract with them? Do they charge you the early termination fee still? That is awesome idea to get out of contract with them, if they don't charge you the termination fee.

Oh I see there your ETF was waived SWEET!

Mr. Ed:

Have you seen this thread? http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/374333-sprint-prl-update.html

I'm intrigued about the posts by "digiblur" and his explanation of PRLs. I've done the fixes you recommend in this post and I know that my speeds increased dramatically (from 30kbps to 800kbps). So what does the PRL updating (or not updating) have to do with 3G speeds? I'm not trying to stir the pot...I'm very happy with the results from your procedure...I'm just up late and trying to understand this whole PRL conundrum.

I went to advance and I don't see those two settings listed.

If you are on a newer version of EPST, usually released with newer versions of Android, your screen may be different. For instance, on mine, running MikG 2.2 (Android 2.3.3), when I select Advanced, I scroll to the bottom and select "RTSP/HTTP Setting" which takes me to a screen to edit RTSP and HTTP settings. See if that is the same for you.
