Flashing, firmware, baseband, help?

nope, XEU was the CSC (UK i think).. my firmware versions were the XX ones too. i just got the UK CSC coz i thought they were.. i dont know, english? :D the bbc iplayer doesnt work for me either, and i have already removed most of those apps with titanium, not a problem at all. the the OXA XXKG5 doesnt include any bloatware i think.. apart from that, i cant tell a difference between the one i had. sorry if this doesnt make much sense any more :D

Maybe it does.. let me just ask you a few things :)

Where you live? where you bought it ? what was the versions of the firmware/kernel/csc before and after you updated it, and did you update via kies first, or go straight to a firmware off that list over on XDA?

i currently live in vietnam, and i bought it over here, but that was before the official release, im pretty sure it came from romania. i dont remember the CSC version i had before, but the firmware was KE1! way back in end of may. and i never updated via kies. i waited a while for KE7 to show up, before i grew impatient n used Odin.. never looked back since :D

I kinda thought the location under your mini profile was a joke :P but since you had the BBC iplayer and you're not in england, bought it there and think it was romanian.. then yeah, it was probably the generic EU firmware you had on it, but to my knowledge the UK isn't part of europe anyway :P this just causes me to get a truckload more confused haha.

But oh yeah, did you have the BBC player before or after you flashed a different firmware?

lol. not my intention to cause more confusion! my point is.. my phone is from romania. i flashed the XEU CSC. i flashed the OXA firmware. i live in vietnam. i think its all good :D lol. no, ididnt have bbc iplayer on my phone, that came with the XEU firmware package

That makes more sense then, if anyone else can confirm then it really looks like the various firmwares and their labels are just country specific, with possible bloatware of sorts... i can live with that :)

Ok guys a lil help? Lol.

So I download this: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Extract it

Flash via Odin like its posted on XDA and Im good right?

Again, live in the States but have this phone running on ATT.

Cheers and thanks!

Should be alright yeah, from what i can tell from the filename it's a package that contains all 3, you may hve to figure out what your CSC is currently, then flash that AFTER you flashed the one you linked there.

That's how far i've gotten in 'reading' that entire thing, it also depends if your phone is carrier locked/branded i'm sure.. but in best case scenario everything will work fine!

Report back what the results are ! :)

Thing is, there is only one package not 3. Dont want to flash until I get some sort of confirmation. :)

I'm flashing the same thing tomorrow, on a full charge of battery, but i found my current CSC on the list so if it ****s up and tries to look for carriers in india or something, i _should_ just flash that and i'll have the proper CSC and the newer firmware.

Nothing permanent damage.. also it's kinda obvious that if something harmful could happen, he'd probably have written it in the whole odin flashing process guide part of the post, but the only thing that's warned about is the repartition thingy, other than that no problems :P

One of us is having to give it a go either way! also IIRC, that exact package is what Villainrom is using.

that package contains all 3. just put in the PDA slot in Odin. ive flashed it, and its working fine, nothing's changed. if thats wat u wanna know, go ahead :D no problems here

Oh, once you extract it, it's 3 different parts? so you can chose to either go ahead with all 3 (csc/pda/phone) or individual? neat!

Cheers to both of you. Will be giving this a go at some point tomorrow. My phone is on the charger for the night.

After this my next stop is rooting and roming. But, how do you get back to stock? Just reflash my original firmware?

Thanks for all!

Cheers guys. :D

Someone correct me if i'm wrong here, but type in *#1234# on your phone, and find that on the list over on the xda forums, you can reflash that.. on the other hand if you don't put a custom rom on it, the firmwares or packages are basically stock :P

Or i suppose the obligatory nandroid backup (doesn't the guide with Odin suggest it?) will put your phone back to before you rooted/rom'd.

yup, to get back to original, flash ur original firmware n u lose root and back to the original.
dont know how this is for warranty purposes, as i see many guys talking about a 'flash count' and resetting it.. im not sure how this is done, though... hope this helps :D

yup, the KG5 i just flashed, like most of the other's on that xda thread are stock. yes a nandroid backup would do it, but dont u need to root before u can?

I think you do.. well it's not really a problem if you find your current firmware on the list to flash back to... right ? at first i was confused to hell and back about the phrase 'just flash back' to stock... also those firmwares here, except the one in the frankenstein section will still make it so Kies will recognize the phone right ?

In which case i _suppose_ you can use Kies to do a firmware recovery-thingy... hopefully some of the smarter people here will tell me to just permanently stay away from Kies and keep a 'stock' firmware from the list safe on your computer ;)

Correct. The XWKF3 firmware in the Official i9100 Firmware thread matches your current one i.e. PDA=KF3, PHONE=KE7. Flash the KF3 kernel and the XEU generic CSC file listed underneath it and you'll be back to stock.

Kies is basically useless (as an update tool) once you move away from your stock firmware anyway, so it's no loss. So long as you have Odin and the stock firmware files mentioned above you can revert.

yup. KG5 is an official 'stock' firmware too, so once kies has rolled out KG5 in ur region, kies will recognize ur firmware, no problem.

and to add wat Slug mentioned above, i'd say kies is useless for anything :D

Thanks to both of you :D clarifies so much! i just wish i could've been a bit more specific in my questions earlier ;) so gonna flash when i've sorted a through RL boring things.

@Trooper: Have you flashed it yet ? how is the battery improvements in 2.3.4?

I just flashed right now. I had problems with Odin connecting to my phone. I did a Google search for Samsung mobile drivers but they did not work. I ended up re-installing Kies and then rebooted. Once I did that, Odin connected perfectly to my phone.

I just flashed so its done! Yay!

As for battery life etc give me a few days. It always takes at least that long to see improvements.

My next project is to figure out how to root, nandroid backups, and finally flashing some custom roms.

Give it a go man, once you go through it once it will be cake!

Cheers and let me know how you go man. ;)

So which package did you flash ? i'm curious since you live in the US, and may have had problems with the csc.

I've spent the past 4 hours helping a mate get LeeDroid on his DHD, hit quite a few bups on the road but eventually we got it working flawlessly with Sense 3.0 and OC'd to 1.4ghz, pretty impressive for that fat bastard of a phone, not sure if i'm too tired to fix up my own or just go straight to bed :P

i think i'll be better able to tell u about the battery coz ive used my phone with multiple firmwares (at least five!) :D KG5 is by quite a distance the best ive used. last morning i got quite excited coz the battery remained at 100% after over an over idling, but it didnt last like that thru the day.. but i still managed to get thru a full day of heavy use... around 15 hours.. its still an overnight charge, but its beter than it ever was

I flashed the package that I linked to up above, which is KG5 running android 2.3.4. So far so good!

Well may be best to get some sleep and then get your phone sorted tomorrow. :)

Let me know how you make out after the flash!

I flashed the .pda with kg5 across aswell, still suffer shitty battery output.. need some brainy help again for a couple of questions

1) Can i flash ANY csc and it'll work ? i think my battery is related to poor signal strength, it's mostly grey, very little green

2) Flashing an older firmware with everything in it is easy? it doesn't complain if it's older or newer as long as i do it through Odin, and will just flash over any firmware i have on ?

You can also download something like Android System Info or Watchdog to see if an app is dragging you down.

My battery life is definitely better today with the newer firmware, even though Im on the crappy ATT network here in the USA. Time will tell if I kepe this phone. Not that the phone stinks (it does not its awesome) but I am not getting as strong of a signal as I expected. May have to stick with VZW after all. Le sigh.

Not sure if its worth flashing an older firmware. Firmware gets updated for a reason you know? But yeah I would think that if you do flash an older firmware it would overwrite whatever you flashed prior. At least that's how its worked for me on my past phones.
