anyone know how to kill gmap from background

Alot of people here agree that google map is always running in background and taking battery. I have tried to manually kill it but its always opening back.Tried with some task killer, still opening and taking battery.I am rooted but i dont want to throw it to the a garbage. what to do? (lattitude is off)

yeah i was thinking of some way of doing this too. but after disabling latitude (signing in when i need to, and then signing out again) even if the maps process is running in the background, it hardly takes any power.. i monitored it for a while now, its consuming a negligible amount of power.. so i wouldnt worry about it maps is far too important for me to freeze and unfreeze when i need to
