Stock Browser 'Crashing!'

Hello Everyone -

Briefly - I have had my Eris for maybe 3 or 4 days and I absolutely love it. I have to thank all of you for the useful tips and tricks I have been reading.

I haven't had a problem until tonight.

I was using the stock browser on MySpace, finished what I was doing, logged out and used the back key to get back to the home screen, which I always do. I could never get back to the home screen, the farthest back it would take me was to the original MySpace login screen and I had to hit the home key to get back to the home screen.

When I now try to open the browser, it acts like it is loading, I see the status bar, which loads all the way, but other than that, the screen is completely white and stays that way - the whole screen is white and never does anything.

Could this have been caused by MySpace or maybe a browser issue that happened to occur while I was on MySpace?

I have cleared cache, cleared all data, rebooted a few times, force stopped it, killed it with advanced task manager and everything else I could think of.

Any ideas?

Hello Everyone -
Any ideas?

Do you have a hammer?

Just kidding. I'd try a battery pull with the device on and awake.

Then I'd do everything else you mentioned.

If none of that worked I'd get rid of the Advanced Task Manager and start over.

If that did not work I'd be out of options and I'd do what you did and post the problem here, and perhaps on other Eris boards.

Good luck, maybe somebody will show up who has solved that.

Using the back button to exit out of the browser is nerve-racking, and is essentially pointless. I use ATK and my runs faster as soon as I clear the unused programs.

The only time I see that white screen is when I'm not connected to the internet but still try to load the page.

Try installing Dolphin browser and see if that works and we'll go from there. Do you have a Facebook app? Bloo or the official one? Use that and see if you can gain access to the internet, and then try to view someone's profile using the browser (there should be an option at the bottom to open in a different format) and see if that loads up.

As smacky said, the only time I have seen that behavior is when there is a lack of a network connection - and just as he does, I usually just kill the browser with ATM rather than hitting the back arrow repeatedly.

I vaguely recall a similar experience, but without the battery pulls, cache clearing, et cetera.

When you have the "white screen" up, does the Menu button respond? If so, try Menu->Windows, and then add another window ("+" button), and kill off the white-screen "window" (tap the small "x" in the upper RH corner). (Note: if this works, you need to repeat the "Menu->Windows" operation to see the thumbnails of each browser window, so that you can kill off one or the other).

I always have a hammer on standby!

I have somehow fixed the problem, don't know if this really fixed it or if it was just a fluke, but I did the *288 or 228, whichever it is, updated the phone and when it restarted it was working fine and has since.

To further answer questions - it was only the stock browser, I had internet access working everywhere else. The 'Menu' command was working when the browser was open, but any other pages that came up were also white pages. I could type an address in the address bar and it would take it, but still with the white pages.

I have seen this Dolphin browser mentioned quite a few times. Is it worth it to install and use it instead of the stock browser?

Thanks for the replies - I appreciate it!

It causes the nearest iPhone to catch fire.

Use it wisely.

...and that is why I use it so often!

*228 is the programming option for Verizon.

I do have the MySpace app, but I needed something in my inbox and I couldn't get to it from there.

I want to say thanks again for everyone helping/throwing in an opinion. I give you 2 very enthusiastic thumbs way up for being nicer than people at other forums - which will remain nameless.
