yahoo email acct hacked

Just got the phone, and I no sooner setup my yahoo email acct and transferred the contacts and i was hacked!
2 emails were sent from my address to most of my contacts including myself. I only opened one of them and it was a spam ad for Canadian discount drugs. Some of my friends wern't happy.
What did I do wrong? How can I avoid this? I immediately deleted my Yahoo acct ad haven't had any problem since, I'm afraid to use my email now.
What to do?

Just because it happened at the same time I wouldn't assume it was connected. I know a number of people who have had their Yahoo accounts hacked and don't have smart phones. Did the hacker's emails say sent from the Photon or whatever message is the default? (I just got a Photon and haven't noticed the message. I know the iPhone and Pre have such a message.) If not I would assume it was a coincidence.

The default email signature does indeed say the message was sent from your Photon on Sprint's network. If you didn't change that and the spam doesn't include it, then it wasn't sent from your phone.

I don't know if the emails said from the photon or not because I deleted the messages right away because I was afraid of them containing malware of some sort.

I've had Yahoo email for 15 yrs or since they began and never had an issue until this. I can't assume it's just a coincidence. I think the android OS is in it's infancy and has a lot of issues to fix much like early windows had. I'm on the edge of returning this photon(it has other issues) and wait for the iphone. Besides I'm not in a 4g area and it appears Sprint won't be for a few years until they get the clearwire/lightsquared issue fixed. I'm not paying $10/m for nothing.

I've had Yahoo email accts for at least that long, too. As a Sprint product ambassador I've owned and used over 2 doz Sprint Smartphones including BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, PalmOS, Windows Phone 7, WebOS and well over a dozen Android devices on every version of Android released to date. Never had any issues with my Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Live or corporate email accounts being hacked.

Not sure what that means. Apple released it's first mobile device OS in 2007. Android, Inc. released it's first iteration of Android OS in 2005. Android was first applied to a mobile phone device in 2008. In terms of technology generations, both are equally mature and well polished. Both OSes are well vetted and used by millions of customers the world over.

I'm highly confident that Motorola Mobility, Google and Sprint have nothing in place to surreptitiously intercept your Yahoo email. Maybe you've downloaded or side-loaded a malicious application that's intercepted your email creds.

I appreciate your encouragement though, some healing will have to take place however before I use email on the phone.
