Root How do I decide which radio to use?

I'm reading through the Effen Manual for the new AAHK and it states that it will install an appropriate radio. But there's also the Optional Menu that will install one of the ATT radios or your own PD98IMG. One of these options is to install the ATT Gingerbread Radio_12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M. This matches the one currently listed on my phone. Is it correct for me to assume that I'll need to install this radio after rooting? Or should I stick with the one that is installed during the rooting process?

What are the factors that determine which radio to install? Is it based solely on the ROM that is installed? From everything I've read, flashing the radio is the most risky part of all this rooting/flashing stuff. I'm more inclined to find a setup I'm happy with and leave it that way than to experiment with different ROMs. So I'd prefer having to flash the radio only once, or as few times as possible.

But you've rooted using the new hack kit, right? And everything is running fine since? Can you post what radio is now installed? Go to Settings>About phone>Software info and it's under Baseband version.

Yes, I used new ace hack kit. Baseband version: 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M. My phone has been working great.

I read in some rom manuals that I could change this radio. What is it exactly for?

Thanks. That's the same one that's on my phone and the one that is the GB radio option in the hack kit. As far as I understand it, the radios are basically firmware for the phone/data/gps receivers in the phone. I may be wrong on that though. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in...Apparently different ROMs work better with different radios. So if you switch ROMs you may need to flash a different radio as well. There's also something called an RIL that needs to be matched to the radio. I have no idea what that is. But I keep reading that if you flash a bad radio you can permanently brick your phone. That's why I've been so reluctant to jump into rooting until I can wrap my head around all of this.

Are you still running the stock Sense ROM or have you tried a custom ROM yet?

I'm still on stock sense. Just rooted and stayed there. I'm doing the same as you, trying to understand all this process before I get into installing different roms to avoid any brick or something like that.

You wont brick the phone. The part where you would brick it is during the root process. All you have to do is create a backup restore point in clockworkmod recovery. I crashed the phone last nite trying to load a new rom and all i did was go back to restore and 15 mins later my phone was like i did nothing at all to do..back to the stock rooted rom. it was great. Everything was where i left it, last calls and messages. Just make a backup and play with it...if you crash it no big deal.

Thanks for the link. Read through the first few pages of the thread and while I understand a bit more about it, I'm still a bit hesitant about doing it. As is noted in that post, the only real way to tell if a particular radio works best for me is to try it. But it's also mentioned that flashing a bad radio is a quick way to brick the phone. I'm sure I'm probably being paranoid but I can't afford to have that happen. When I root, I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the radio that is installed will work well with the ROM I choose to use.

bingo. Always Always Back UP. no matter how stable you think the rom should be.

sorry for the newb questions but still new to this process, and no matter on how much ive read so far i'm still scratching my head.

If i download a custom rom from XDA included in the zip files is the radio and kernals and all the things to get it running correct?? where i get confused is why download other radios and such.

Correct, the rom zip's have everything to get the phone up and running.(a radio and ril)
Playing with different radios is a whole different ball game, you can look at the xda thread and see which radios are recommended for each rom, but in the end it also depends on your location which radio is best for you. Different radios can affect data speeds, signal strengths etc..

For me in dallas the Radio: 26.06.06.30_M gives me roughly 4.1Mb download and 1.1Mb upload speeds. while a different radio i only received a 1/4th of those speeds....
