SetCPU vs Overclock

I was using SetCPU all yesterday. I am using Overclock widget today. I like the overclock widget more. Why? It's a widget that shows you the clock speed and you can customize the widget to look like other HERO icons. I overall like the setup better on Overclock Widget than SetCPU.

Don't get me wrong I purchased SetCPU for the one dollar because he came out with a kick ass kernal that sped the phone up! So why not give credit where it's due!

I have both of them but honestly like the overclock widget much better.

Still can't get over how fast the setcpu/overclock widget make the phone run at max!

I currently have my overclock widget to max speed with screen on, and then clocked down to 128,000 when the screen is off.

Simple test I did, where the phone normally is clocked it took almost 30 seconds to do a full list of my apps via Apex installer/uninstaller. When the speed is set to max it only takes 9 seconds!
F'ing love it!!

Sweet. Ok I am all setup on Fresh 1.1 now with Gumbo and SetCPU running. I set it to 528 max and 160 min but do i select performance or on demand?

(Posting this via WIFI Tether...LOVE IT!)

I am also running Fresh 1.1 with the Gumbo kernel. I followed ghbil's post to set max at 528 and min at 245 ondemand. It is a newer post than the one suggesting 480 max.

Let's see how this goes....

UPDATE:

A couple of additional posts by gbhil that help understand the speed settings.

personally i ran both programs. First i installed overclock nd had no complaints or issues whatsoever but then noticed everyone saying setcpu was the way to go so i uninstalled overclock and bought setcpu. After running both programs on my fresh 1.1 w/ gumbo kernel i came to the conclusion that they both perform the same. Screen load times, accelerometer rotation etc. all took the same amount of time to execute. Yes setcpu may have more options like profiles etc. but for me as long as it will slow down the cpu while the screen is off/sleeping and speed it up while the screen is on/awake im fine with that nd dont need all that Failsafe stuff and low battery. If my battery is getting noticeably hot which btw is hasn't i would turn down the cpu setting anyhow and give the cpu a break or watch my usage if the battery is low. The reason i switched back to overclock is because when u wake the phone with setcpu it will hang for about 5 sec or so. Overclock does not have this issue so i chose to go with overclock. thats just my two cents though.

I am having no problems running 160/528 with SetCPU w/OnDemand, anyone know a reason to choose 245 over 160 other than delayed wake time, witch I am not experiencing?

I think I read the 160 can cause some applications to not function properly. (That dang thread on xda is looooong.) I have been going with the recommendation of gbhil who is The Man when it comes to the Gumbo Kernal and setCPU. I posted the links to his posts.

I did not go with 160 because I have not really had issues with my battery not lasting. I go off charger at about 8:00 am and by 1:00 am the battery is still at around 20%. I'm not a constant user but I do text a ton during the day and make a handful of short calls. I run everything on (BT, GPS, etc) with the exception of WiFi. Battery life has not been an issue for my Hero.

Having said that, I still want to know what the optimal settings are for setCPU as people get more time and experience with it.

Nice! looks like two of us are using it now...lol!

hi,

I am trying out setcpu

I have it set on the green slider to Max 528; min 160; ondemand.

when I open the app.. at the top, it says 528 max; 480 min
but the widget on the homesreen says: 245max; 160; min.

I just want to confirm this is functioning correctly?
Does this slider setting mean:
when needed with bigger more intense apps (ondemand), the cpu will race up to 528, but during low demand time, it will drop to min 160. So it could function in all setting mhz in between?

anyone live in San Francisco bay area and want to teach me how to root my sprint htc hero? im new to the android world and want to get on the hype!

Dude, checkout this thread http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/38911-guide-root-rom-faq-tutorial.html and scroll down in the first post to see the AutoRoot for Pre Kitchen.

Try to see if you can get that to work and if you can, its really only a click of a button away pretty much. If you can't get it to work, just follow those steps one by one and type exactly what you see and you should be good. If you really are uncomfortable with doing that, then you should probably not be rooting the phone.

Its hard to brick this phone however you can still brick it if you really really don't have any idea what you are doing.

So I've been playing around with both of these apps for a week or so, and I've been really disappointed with SetCPU. It runs FAST, but battery life is not good at all. I've been leaving my phone off the charger at night to see how much battery it eats up when it isn't doing anything, and I've lost about 7% over 7 hours, which is good. I tried setting it at max and min of 122, 160, and 245, however, and got the same results every time, which makes me think it isn't ramping the processor down properly. Plus it takes several years to wake the phone up if you go down as low as 122.
Just out of curiosity, I started using Overclock Widget to see how it works, and WOW--I've only tried it for two nights, but my battery only dropped 3 and 2% the two times. It also seems to save much more battery during off and on use during the day, and doesn't act like it's bringing the phone out of a week-long coma when I try to wake it up.
Now, I completely understand that this is crude data and it doesn't really prove anything. I also know that most people using setCPU don't have any battery problems--BUT--if you haven't been getting results from setCPU, definitely give overclock widget a try, because it is working much better for me.
I would also love to hear from other people that are willing to try overclock widget for a while just to see how it changes their experience. I'm sure the developer of setCPU would love to know if there does turn out to be something he could be doing better.

I just got my Hero and rooted it last night and have been messing with it. I just set up overclock to see how it helped it. Can you share what the settings would be for overclock? I only find setCPU posted around. Right now I took a guess and set it to:
Screen On Min: 128000
Screen On Max: 528000
Differ Freq Screen Off: Checked
Screen Off Min: 128000
Screen Off Max: 245760

Do these settings look good or should I make an adjustment to them?

I've been using 384/528 when the screen is on, as Overclockwidget really likes to run at the lower settings when possible. You'll probably notice more slowdown than you care to deal with after a while if you leave it on those settings. I have the same settings as you for when the screen is turned off, which brings me to an interesting find I had after last night:

I set the frequencies to 122/128 (I added some frequencies since the ones provided aren't all correct) and my battery went from 45% to 30% overnight. I'm going to try it again to make sure something weird didn't happen, but I definitely don't recommend using anything below a max of 245 at this point. A minimum of 128 has been fine, however. Maybe adding a frequency at or slightly above 160 will work better, since the widget seems to round the set frequency to the closest one the processor will actually run at.
