Root Coming from a rooted EVO, confused about rooting my Epic Touch

Hey all,

Can someone clarify a few things for me please? I have been reading for about 12 hours over the past few days at XDA about rooting my Epic Touch but I am confused about a few things. The process of rooting and using recovery or ODIN is not a problem, I can grasp that, it's more of a concept thing I am stuck on.

I got my Epic Touch to replace a broken EVO. When I rooted the EVO, I could leave it all completely stock if I wanted or flash new roms/kernels independently of the root.

It seems to me (and this is where I am confused!) that rooting an Epic Touch requires flashing a new kernel to gain root and or CWM using ODIN. People are then talking about flashing other kernels such as LoSt to overcome some potential LOS issues or even the stock one back over the rooted one. If the root is tied to the kernel, won't flashing the stock one undo the root?

I have read 100s of pages on XDA about the Midnight and Starburst Roms, with people skirting around the confusion I have, but none really answer it!

TL;DR - If I root by using Odin and a rooted kernel then flash the stock pulled EG30 over it, will I be back to where I was before I started?

If you want root with the stock ROM this will work for you. You could then flash other kernels/roms from there if you want.

Has anyone tried this on a Mac (snow leopard) ?
The directions seem vague to me since the automated script is .exe
Which isn't compatible with Mac. Any help would greatly be appreciated
