I have a G1, and HTC Hero. I want to love the Hero. Bed it. I've had it 4 months now, and just finding it is so gosh damn slow. I've reset it, removed all extra apps. I have no idea. I mean, by slow I mean, click to get a new text message, count, 1,2,3,4,5 and then you get to the message app.

Browser, painful. Isn't the network. I have 5mbps network wifi...App switching is painfully slow.

ANything I can do. I just cancelled my sprint contract because I just can't use this phone. Keyboard reaction is seconds delay to type.

Probably just going to root it and hack on it, but anybody have any last minute, I'm on the ledge about to seriously toss this phone against a Rock help.

If anybody wants, I can make a YouTube video of how frakin unresponsive this phone has become.

root with fresh 1.1 and use Gumbo kernal and you will be flying. This makes the phone really usable and will take away any lag that you are experiencing.

this will fix the keyboard lag also. I don't really use my hero that much but when I do, I can see a big difference on how it was stock to how it is now.

I'm stock (not rooted) and have no lag.

Do you have the vibration feedback on for typing? I found this created a lot of lag.

Same here, phone is stock. And I did start having problems with keyboard lag, but only while posting on forums, not texting. I read to turn off the keyboard feedback and since then haven't had a problem. Apps pull up within 1-2 seconds, which is plenty fast for me.

Idk about you, but I am running Fresh with Gumbo and I have no problem. Although when I had this problem when I didn't root, I changed to these settings.

Sound & Display:
Dialer Keypad tone - off
Audible selection - unchecked
Animation - unchecked

Locale & Text/Touch Input/Text Input:
Sound Feedback - unchecked
Vibrate when typing - unchecked

This helped my phone with the text delay by a lot. If you have a problem, try using swype. It is a lot faster than the original keyboard. All you do is drag your finger across the letters and it will auto-predict what you dragged over and make your word or have a list of words you were trying to find, its real simple and fast. I use it for the Market instead of the original. I use T9 for texting and I text real fast with that and no lag.

If this don't fix your lag, then let us know. You might just have to root which is very simple. It make's it completely faster.

Another thing you might want to consider is not using the Sense widgets, or the Sense UI at all. The Android home is a lot faster when it comes to this as well.

Idk if this makes a difference at all, but try using Handcent as well. This seems to be a better texting app than the message one.

Probably best to get Fresh 1.1 with Gumbo Kernal 0.31. Then when android 2.1 comes out for our heroes, we can POSSIBLY update it and see if it's faster. I wont update, ill just ask you guys if its worth it. But by that time, I am pretty sure a new Rom will come out that has all the sprint/HTC/Android updates. Idk if fresh does that or not. Fresh 1.2 with android 2.1? not sure how they work with their roms.

The next ROM from Flipz was going to be based on 2.1 after the update's released. Whether he's changed that statement recently or not, I don't know.

Basically, once 2.1 is officially released, the ROM guys will have their own custom versions out in a couple hours, and those custom versions will already be faster than stock 2.1.

Can you turn off the sense ui? Where do you go to turn it off?

thanks for mostly all the great positive quotes. turning off senseUI helped greatly. to the comment below, seriously, i paid 200 bucks plus tax for this phone, and 80 bucks a month to sprint, i EXPECT a phone that when i press the browser button, doesn't take EIGHT seconds to load the app, or 5 seconds to load the MESSAGE window to create a new message.

my old nokia 6820 was amazing. for the price and the HW/engineering behind this phone, when i click an app it should fraking open, and when i press a keyboard character, it shouldn['t take TWO SECONDS to respond...

i takes me 15 seconds to make a phone call from start to finish.

that is bullshit

OMG!!! I had to wait 2 SECONDS for my phone to do something!!!! Someone help, my phone is terrible!!!! I have to wait sooooooo long to do anything I am gonna cry!!!! I need a phone that responds in a split second any time I touch a button or its a slow, laggy piece of garbage!!!! GTFO kid

sounds more like you're expecting too much out of this product.

If you want a phone that makes a phone call instantly, then the Hero isn't for you. Get a Razr or something for that.

Yes, the Hero has lag, especially bone stock. That's due in part to inefficiencies in the stock kernel. Fix those inefficiencies, and the phone lags a LOT less, if at all.

The whole point of Android is to customize it, and that includes using the ability to Root and throw on a different ROM or Kernel (or both).

I'm sorry it takes you oh so long to make a call. It certainly doesn't take my Hero that long. Dialer pops up nearly instantly, and there's no lag in typing in a number. Virtually no delay in hitting a contact shortcut, to the point when the call is sent out. Same thing with apps. There's a few that are slow in opening, but that's the nature of the app. The rest, are virtually instantaneous at opening.

It's all in how you manage the capabilities of your phone.

Finally, someone that understands the phone is underpowered...

but then...this

A contradiction, in the same post.

It's a phone, not a baby...you can call it ugly (or laggy)...its okay.

Woo woo troll police. What seems to be the problem? Dreamliner i need you to take a breath and relax. ummmmmm ok go at it again but please no punches below the belt. The hero on that video looked just fine. People here say no lag because to us 2 seconds is really not a big deal. So technically 2 seconds is lag for you but for us its just fine. I think you need to relax or i will ask mbell and Tatatataonkosddj or something like that i get confused with that name to call you a caca head.

Its just frustrating...I start a thread on dust, get flammed away for being the 'only' one with problems...30 days later, 50% have dust...was I wrong...nope.

The phone is slow, way way slower than the droid. I classify laggy as holding a phone in your hand...why holding? Because if it was faster, you would be doing!

I digress...I am not wrong, I just have limited tolerance to a phone that has trouble keeping up with an iPhone. I absolutely loathe Apple products, but you gotta hand it to them...their phone is still faster...even than the Nexus one.

arg!

The hero is slower than it should be...it cannot keep up with the functionality it claims to deliver. Quality without quantity is pointless.

What I find funny, is you posted first about how you have 'no lag' and now you are defending lag.

Whats more, is when someone says the device cant keep up, and the OP is expecting too much, you agree.

So, either you have no lag, or you do and deal with it.

Which is it? Oh wait, you posted video of it...

Now, you can GTFO...kid.

Listen up genius, appears I have to spell this out for your. I dont consider having to wait a few seconds for something to open "lag", neither do alot of others. Its beyond ridiculous to expect your phone to do everything instantly If I am sitting around and waiting 10-15 seconds for my dialer to pop up or for my keyboard to rotate than yes, I would consider that lag. Watch my video, I get none of that.

I'm sorry, let me clarify...My phone fails to keep pace with it's operator. Gee, I wonder if there is a word that describes that. hmmmmmmmm.

If your hero can't keep up with you, and you just can't stand it anymore, then get a different phone and stop trolling the boards about your hate for the Hero.

Good luck finding one that CAN keep up with you in that case, especially for the value of the phone plus Sprint's plans/prices. My Hero outperforms my Sister's Iphone, and her husbands as well. My sister is a hard core apple fanatic, she's even got a damn mac laptop, and yet she wishes she had my Hero instead of her Iphone (she even tried trading with me...not a chance). And that was BEFORE I put the Gumbo Kernel on. Now there's just no contest. Do I have the games/apps the Iphone has? Of course not. But Android hasn't been mainstream nearly long enough to produce them.

i have to go with the crowd and even mbell(cant live with you, cant live without you:D) of course the hero is slower STOCK than the droid, slower processor(if you did research before purchasing you would know) no sense UI(10-30mb @any given time) and also your complaining about programs like the browser opening slow(it does have to open a home page), and also the fact that this multi tasks(unlike the iPhone). YOU Made the decision to buy the phone, You made the decision to agree to the contract, NOW DEAL WITH IT. Stop asking for sympathy when you dont make any steps to help the problem yourself. I have Fresh 1.1, custom kernel and removed most of the sprint bloatware and my phone is FAST. Especially when the new OC kernel is done we will upgrade to that. You have two choices, CRY to us and sprint for your decision, or DO something about it. Forums dont like Whiners!
