Root Contemplating a Root, Completely Lost

I've been thinking about rooting my Triumph, but before I do, I have a few questions that hopefully some of you can answer for me.
1) Does CM7 even support fully support the Triumph? It's not listed on the website.
2) What features are missing from the current CM7 build that are supported by the stock ROM?
3) Is the current CM7 build running on Gingerbread?
4) Finally, how difficult is the actual process of rooting and what are your favorite features?

1) No. Do we need the CM team to "officially" support the Triumph? Once again, no. Just because a device is officially supported, doesn't necessarily mean that it's better. It just happens to have nightlies built for it. The same maintainers working on a device for the CM team would undoubtedly be working on it unofficially as well.

2) You can read the "stickied" CM7 thread in this section for the current status. For the most part (about 99%), there isn't anything the stock ROM can do that CM7 can't. In fact, there are annoying bugs from the stock ROM experience that are fixed in CM7/MIUI. The only major issue with our CM7 port is HDMI is not working.

3) Yes. For each major AOSP release (stock Android), the CM team takes that source code and makes it accessible for any Android device. CM5 was Cupcake/Donut; CM6 was Eclair/Froyo; CM7 is Gingerbread; and lastly, CM9 is Ice Cream Sandwich.

4) Rooting isn't necessary for us (the Triumph). Because of the way CWM is installed on our device, you can bypass the rooting step. However, if you'd like to be thorough (and it's what I suggest), the rooting process is as simple as installing an app (Gingerbreak) and running it.

1. The Triumph is not officially supported by the CyanogenMod folks. We had a couple of amazing developers that made the ROM itself and shared it with us.
2. The only major thing is HDMI. There is an issue with your processor running at max sometimes when you have wifi and Bluetooth enabled at the same time.
3. Yes.
4. Not hard. Check out the stickies up at the top of the ATR section here, and ask more questions if you need more information.
 
Thanks for the replies everybody, but Isaac's post got me to wondering about the difference between installing a ROM and rooting. I was under the impression that to do one, you also had to do the other. Could someone please explain the difference? Thanks again!

Both are stickies at the top of the forums. I recommend reading through the Root Guide especially, and the other one afterwards if you want to put a custom ROM on your phone and still need help with it.

Oh boy.

If you just want to root, you can use Gingerbreak to root it.

If you want to install a ROM (CM7 or MIUI) you need Clockwork recovery. I think someone else can better explain the recovery.

REGARDLESS, I'd advise you to go here: http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...stalling-cwm-custom-rom-motorola-triumph.html

That will get you moving on installing a ROM.

This time I am the ninja!!!!

All kidding aside, our phone is a bit different than many others in that we can install a custom recovery without having root access. I still recommend reading the posts linked above as they have a lot of useful information you should know before messing with this stuff.

Told ya someone could explain it better than me.

I just don't have the patience to type it all out. After working 8 hours (at Starbucks), you get a little short on patience. :P

It wasn't obvious that root was NOT needed to install custom recovery (like on most other phones, I thought it was kinda odd to just link the 'sudo' to 'su' and voila).

Maybe there should be a note about that, so people only need to follow the rooting procedures if they want to root stock ROM and that's it. But installing a custom ROM doesn't require rooting prior, and will be rooted after.

Sure. But that still doesn't negate the fact you have to deal with questions like "How small is a tall?" and orders like "Can I get a NONFATEXTRAHOTSKINNYVANILLALATTEWITHWHIPPEDCREAMWITH2EXTRASHOTSANDASPLENDA."

Yes, the free coffee is nice, but the orders, not so much. :P

Yeah, that is a good idea. If you follow the steps you know you don't have to root to do it, but it doesn't indicate that the new ROM would have root access. I can address that stuff.

That is why I don't work in a situation where I have to deal with too many people, my co-workers can be aggravating enough!

I contemplated doing it for about 20 mins after I bought the phone, while talking to the guy working at Boost Mobile (who had the Triumph) He told me that he didn't root his because it was too complicated of a process. Went home and started looking it up online. Rooting your phone is easy (took me about an hour to root, install cm7 and add the google apps). The most time consuming part is when you realize "hey I can do whatever I want now":D then spend the next 20 hours drinking Mtn Dew and changing every possible setting on the phone.

All in all its worth it, you can always do a recovery and go back to normal if you dont like it.

P.S. Just so you know this is the first root/mod I have done to an Android and Ive had 3 in just over a year. so that should tell you how easy it is.
