Should I ditch the oreo Moment?

I have a Samsung Moment and the oreo effect/loose slider is really getting on my nerves. It is less than 2 weeks old and has a considerable twist to the screen, making it difficult to close from anywhere but the center. I am still within the 30 days and I am thinking that maybe I should switch it out for a Hero if all the Moments are gonna have the slider problem (if it really is a problem).

It is really the only thing I don't like about this phone. I don't mind the size because it just goes into a leather case(I am accident-prone) that I carry in my jacket or purse.

The Hero might be easier to not break, but is it worth losing the keyboard, faster processor and LED flash?

I love this phone, but I sorta feel like its gonna fall apart.

That's what I was thinking. I talked to my sister a couple hours ago and she said that all the Moments in her household have a slight wiggle to the screen. I will probably stop at the Sprint store sometime tomorrow to see what I can do.
Anybody have any advice for the Sprint experience? I have only been there once, and that was to purchase the phone and start a contract. I came from Verizon, which was a generally bad experience. You have to prepare yourself before going there.

I had the same problem with the Moment. I also had the same problem with the Palm Pre. Sliders wear out. Some sooner than others. I am just glad I don't need a physical keyboard, I prefer to use Shapewriter/Swype over the physical KB. The only physical KB phones that I have had that were durable were the Palm Centro/ BB Curve type of phone. The sliders (Mogul, TP, Pre, Moment) seem to do that Oreo twist eventually.

just keep exchanging them until you get a perfect one is my advice. going to get my third one tomorrow. first one = loose keyboard. this one = VERY wiggly trackpad/optical joystick. or perhaps i'll try the hero for the weekend, although the idea of a slower processor when my moment already lags a little bit is very disheartening.

Define "loose keyboard". Because obviously if I grab my screen and wiggle it, it will move slightly (a few mm if that) in all directions (except the left of course). However, if I leave it alone, it stays firmly in place. I would think a "loose" keyboard would not stay in place on its own accord. I mean, the thing's supposed to move, its a slider phone for crying out loud.

There is about 1/8th inch of play. When I swipe the touch screen from left to right, the slider opens. If I pick it up by just the face, the slider starts to open. Is that a better description?

I would make you guys a video, but I use my phone to do that...

Of course, I expect it to have some play, I just think this is a little excessive. I want to make sure that that this thing will last a while. I mean, this was the most expensive phone at contract price, so it should be made well, right?

I just hope I can get a good one this time because I tried my sister's Hero and if felt so slow to me. I like the shape better, but I don't think I could deal with losing speed.

If your keyboard slider is damaged/broken just from simply being used (not counting mild trauma of, say, being in your pocket and getting jostled around), bring it in and tell the techs to replace it under warranty. I love Sprint because they've always been good about replacing their failed devices, under warranty or not. Its why I won't leave, they've got the best plans, and they always hook me up.

I'll admit, I was nervous at first about the slider thing. The slight amount of play even irritated me at first. But then I went into Best Buy, played with the abused and beat-up display sliders, and realized just how bad it could get.

I was recently thinking about taking my Moment back for a Hero for that reason. That'd be the only reason - that the moving parts in the keyboard are a liability. I even went to said Best Buy to try to play around with a demo (never got the chance, line was too long). But when I left, I thought about the pros and cons.

1. The keyboard may be a liability, but DAMN if it ain't awesome. I make virtually no mistakes typing now, and it feels great. Not like the virtual keyboard I had on the Instinct. Plus, playing emulated games is fantastic when they're full screen with a keyboard.

2. The flash on the camera works great. Why the hell would a manufacturer leave the flash out of some models? Hero has 5mp, but multiple reviews say the Moment's pictures are more impressive (I can at least say I'm impressed, without comparing).

3. Android 2.1 will soon be available for the Moment

4. The Hero has Sense, which I've yet to check out but keep reading great things about, but I myself installed Open Home and haven't seen the stock Android interface for awhile now.

5. The Hero looks and feels build well. It has a housing that I wish more manufacturers would go with. It looks like it could take a fall like a champ.

6. The Moment can take a fall like a champ too. My wife's did, smack onto the pavement and even made a tiny ding on the top (despite the protective "case" I put on it) and believe it or not her screen has less play when wiggled than mine, which has never taken a fall like that *knock on wood*.

7. The Moment has a proximity sensor. What does the Hero do for calls when the screen is against someone's cheek? Just curious.

8. Everyone talks crap about the Hero's processor compared to the Moment's, and I get it - they're both the archaic Arm 11 architecture. Yes the Moment's has a faster clock speed but I firmly believe the Hero's is fast enough. Its all about software optimization. The iPhone is smooth as glass with its execution, and it's processor isn't as powerful as the Hero. Imagine the Moment after a few good updates, though.

I totally agree with you. I actually swapped mine out this evening and the new phone only has a slight big of play in it. I was finally starting to be ok with my original, but it got on my last nerve today when it went into airplane mode on its own 4 times. The best part is that one of those times, I was stuck dialing out a call to my dad to ask him if his Moment randomly went into airplane mode. I ended up with 6 voicemails this morning around 10 am, when I realized that it had gone into airplane mode overnight. Apparently, this has happened to my dad only once.

The funny thing is, when I left the store with my brand new phone, I tried to call my husband and got burned again on my first call!

I am pretty sure this is just a stupid software issue that will be fixed if we all complain enough. Be it annoying, it is still more bearable than the lag(mostly music playback) I get from my sister's Hero. I'm not trashing on the Hero, they are both great phones. I just got spoiled by having a Moment first.

Oh, and about the lack of proximity sensor... my sister is an airhead teenager and her face hangs up on me at least 4 times a day

This says it all.

So far so good with my Moment, I haven't been burned too bad other than a few stupid things like my alarm one day deciding to only ring for a couple of seconds and then going quiet on its own. Most of it is software error. My wife had problems with her keyboard that was fixed by restarting her phone. Same thing with her proximity sensor deciding not to work one day, fixed with a restart.

BTW did you say you were in the military? I'm in the 82nd at Bragg.

You know, the things they don't let females like me do... just kidding, my 11B friends told me horror stories about being the "new guy" and all about getting to carry the saw on a ruck march. I remember getting to clean the whole company's saws in basic because I was the only one who could take them apart and get them back together.
