Creating an App?

AppInventor is being taken over by MIT but it is not ready yet.

I think this will be the URL:
App Inventor Edu | Playing with blocks, building apps

AppInventor is more of a learning toy than anything. But it will not give you a good idea of what it really takes to code an app --

Okay that's what I thought. I was like WHAT IN THE WORLD! Hahahaha I really wanted to get this underway tonight, but oh well. Good things I can wait for. Haha, Now... On the way to rooting my phone, it's about time, I've only had it since June! hahahaha

what do you need unix knowledge for?

Reason is simple. Some developers like to use the command-line adb.exe to access the emulator filesystem. From there we can cd ls rmdir sqlite (access app database directly) etc commands which are pretty Unix/Linux like. For others they maybe use the File Explorer of the ddms.exe instead but they cannot use sqlite from ddms.exe interface afaik.

Is there anything else I can use to create apps?

You might want to just try and dive in head first and see if you can get the "Hello World" app running.

Google has some good getting started guides, including stuff on installing and setting up Eclipse.

It all starts here:

The Developer's Guide | Android Developers

:)

We also have a whole app dev section here at AF:
Application Development - Android Forums

And app Dev 101:
Developer 101 - Android Forums

And the App dev sticky:

Forget what everyone on here has told you so far.

Java Beginner: 87 Tutorials

Android Development: 200 Tutorials

I'm suggesting starting with Java beginner so that you get an idea of what you're working with when you get into the Android Development tutorials. You really need to know basic Java, if you aren't up for learning that just give up on trying to develop using the links I provided.
