I do have quite a bit of Unix experience, but no Java. I will read up on it!

AppInventor is being taken over by MIT but it is not ready yet.

Okay that's what I thought. I was like WHAT IN THE WORLD! Hahahaha I really wanted to get this underway tonight, but oh well. Good things I can wait for. Haha, Now... On the way to rooting my phone, it's about time, I've only had it since June! hahahaha

the android api abstracts the architecture pretty comprehensively afaik

Reason is simple. Some developers like to use the command-line adb.exe to access the emulator filesystem. From there we can cd ls rmdir sqlite (access app database directly) etc commands which are pretty Unix/Linux like. For others they maybe use the File Explorer of the ddms.exe instead but they cannot use sqlite from ddms.exe interface afaik.

You can use Unity engine, it is primary intended for game developing, but you can also make pretty much anything with it: UNITY: Game Development Tool

You might want to just try and dive in head first and see if you can get the "Hello World" app running.

Google has some good getting started guides, including stuff on installing and setting up Eclipse.

I'm suggesting starting with Java beginner so that you get an idea of what you're working with when you get into the Android Development tutorials. You really need to know basic Java, if you aren't up for learning that just give up on trying to develop using the links I provided.

I am learning to use Eclipse because you can use OpenGL with this. Another solution is the Canvas.
Much easier but slower.
