I think the Mayan calendar is correct about the end of the world. It's just off by several billion years. But yeah, the Earth will no longer exist at some point as the star at the center of the solar system we call "the sun" ages and shrinks then swells up large enough to engulf the inner planets, Earth included.

Probability is that the Earth will get hit by an large asteroid long before the sun becomes a red giant...

Last extinction event that effected the planet, per science, was around 65 million years ago. Murphy's law says we're just about due for another galactic fastball up the middle...

Ooooh there's a common mistake here! Mayans NEVER predicted something like "The End of the World". Their calendar is quite different from our concept of calendar, ours have 365-366 days and then ends (and that year never comes back). Maya calendar was cyclic and the most important lasted more than 5 thousand years (they had many calendars since considered many more things than just days and Earth translation). So what happens when us, used to have things that always finish, see something as long-lived as the main Maya calendar reaching "it's end"?

The Maya calendar isn't finishing, it's starting again, a new era (they called it a new sun), kinda like our new year's celebration but much more important since it's only once every 5k years xD

Not very sure when and how this end of the world thing started xD Nothing will happen though xD

Btw.. The Mayas were by far much more scientific than the bible =) to say an example, their calendar is the most accurate that man has done, that includes the current gregorian one.

What we've learned from the past though is that life always survives. One extinction led to the rise of the dinosaurs. Another led to the rise of mammals. Who knows what the next extinction will lead to. Perhaps a sentient cockroach species will one day unearth our bones and hypothesize about our social behaviors.

Does it really end? Honestly, we don't know. I like to think it doesn't. Opinions vary though and there is no evidence to back up any point of view on the issue.

I think it ends. Otherwise it would not be known in its purest form as "death."

But I always like "passing on," or "passing away." Like the person is not dead, they're just heading out to another area somewhere.

It's known as death for the simple reason that we don't know what happens. It's one of the rare subjects where everyone has an opinion, but no one has a shred of evidence. We don't even have anything we can hypothesize off of. One day the singularity will arrive and the issue will be moot though.

Well, one thing for sure, this thread seemed to be started by a member who was wondering about the Mayan calendar "prediction."

I did a tongue-in-cheek segue from "end of the world" at large to "end of the world" for each person who dies.

Now there are several posts abandoning the half of the segue that had to do with "end of the world" and focusing on afterlife yes or no stuff.

So, classic thread jack.. I'll give the opportunity to get it back on track with this:

The society that spawned that calendar is no longer in existence, even though there are remnants, progeny who have Mayan dna, they don't live the true core Mayan culture, although some do study it as best they can.

Explanations of that calendar seem to vary even among those of that blood who have schooled themselves on it. The thing that is in common among their expressed thoughts on it is that it was astronomical in nature and not astrological; it was science of the times, not philosophy, although a bit of religion/legends/myths are in there as a portion of the hieroglyphic-like symbolism.

There are a number of different "prophecies" about the end of the world.

I believe some of the more popular are:

* The end of the Mayan calendar
* The prophecies of Nostradamus
* The prophecies of Edgar Cayce

Are they legit? Or are they something else entirely? I can't say one way or another but I find it somewhat disturbing that Edgar Cayce's last prediction was the day of his burial... and he was correct! He died three days after making the prediction and was buried two days after that.
