I can't install the second ClockWorkMod Recovery using fastboot
I just type the line you mentioned and reboot the phone, it seems okay but when I turn on the phone and try to backup with Rom Manager, it asks for download and when it finishes it says "An error occured while flashing your recovery"
Are you talking about 5.0.2.8? If so, use the installer for 5.0.2.6--it works fine. I was running 5.0.2.6 until today.

If that works, try upgrading to 5.0.2.8 using fastboot.

finally done and I can confirm that it is indeed working on Telstra-branded Wildfire S

great thanks to CafeKampuchia for the amazing guide! here is a brief of the steps that I have made.

It is probably not the most effective way to do it (e.g. I could probably skip the upgrade to 2.3.5 and avoid issues with HBOOT-1.08.0000), rather it's just a reference of what and when happened, and what has changed (warning: lots of boring letters and numbers below):

  • So I started off with innocent WFS A510b model PG76120, it was (and still is) S-ON and was initially equipped with Telstra-branded ROM (Android 2.3.3 software number 1.52.841.2 +some bloatware)
  • at first I updated to 2.3.5 using the GoldCard and stock HTC firmware for EU market - this is optional step 2 from the first post.
  • this has changed my phone to Android 2.3.5, software number 2.13.401.2, model A510e (this was a bit surprising!), HBOOT-1.08.0000 (this caused me a bit of pain during the next step), MICROP-0451 and RADIO-7.53.39.03M (Oct 31 2011,20:38:16)
  • anyway then I went to unlock the bootloader via HTCdev.com as per the step 3
  • since the previous upgrade actually changed me to dreaded HBOOT-1.08.0000 the usual procedure with RUU from HTCdev.com did not work (it failed with ERROR [191] ROM IS NOT SUPPORTED)
  • but then instructions from topic "[HBOOT] HBOOT update for EU users who's having problem with RUU" helped, it all worked like a charm!
  • after that my phone became *** UNLOCKED ***, HBOOT-1.08.0099 and RADIO-7.53.39.03M (Nov 28 2011,19:09:21) (I only list stuff here that has changed)
  • then I went and rooted the phone via HTC supertool v3 as per step 4. This was OK, the only issue was that it did not work under Parallels Desktop for Mac (yes I am using Mac! :)) so I had to do this step on my spare HP laptop with Windows and it all worked fine
  • after verifying that phone was actually rooted (Superuser application installed) I used eoghan2t7's installer to install ClockworkMod Recovery, it was version 5.0.2.6
  • after that I have installed the ROM Manager application from the market and used it to update to the latest version of the recovery (which is 5.0.2.8 as of now)
  • then as prescribed I created backup of then installed 2.3.5 EU ROM via ClockworkMod Recovery mode(Nandroid backup)
  • and finally I have installed unofficial CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC0-marvel-KANG (also using ClockworkMod Recovery)
  • This has brought me to Android 2.3.7, build number GWK74, baseband 47.23a.35.3035H_7.53.39.03M and kernel 2.6.35.13
  • finally I had one last issue with installing Google applications package (as if it was not enough troubles yet! :))
  • After installing gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip and rebooting, the keyboard was constantly crashing (process com.android.inputmethod.latin has stopped working unexpectedly) right after reboot, so I could not do anything at all to proceed with initial Google account configuration
  • luckily topic "[ripped] google apps for cm7.2 port" was there to rescue me and after I re-flashed CyanogenMod and then used ripped-gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip it finally worked OK (installed Market and other apps without any crashes so I could finish the configuration and proceed further)
  • of course after that there was all the usual yadda-yadda with link2sd and all other essential apps which is well covered in the internets and much easier

Thanks again everyone for their great topics and posts!
