Help Memory (RAM) issue

So every time I check my memory space (RAM) it almost always say I only have 100 MB remaining. This phone is supposed to have 1 GB of ram. I restarted my phone to shut down all these applications and yet it still says 100mb-200mb remaining. I checked this on task manager.

Can someone help me out and tell me how to fix this because I remember in the beginning it said I had about 700 MB remaining and than went down hill from there.

Don't try to fix it as it is the way android works. I'm on my phone at the moment so I will post a link when I get to my computer that explains it.

I could find you a thousand different discussions on this topic because it is a common angst with new android users. Long and short, Android works best with apps preloaded. It actually saves battery and it will learn the apps it should cache after a little bit of use. A lot of that is discussed in that thread, if any of if is confusing, just post back here and I will do my best to clarify.

All of the RAM is going to be powered anyway so it is best to utilize as much of it as possible if the phone needs it.

You should also mention that about 300MB of RAM is reserved for the OS which is why you had ~700MB to start off

like others have said OP its really nothing to worry about unless your having issues. If everything seems to be working fine it doesn't really matter what it says you have remaining.

Maybe its placebo effect, but I find limiting my background cached processes makes the phone run smoother... usually the apps that get cached, I don't even use.

I find almost no correlation between cached apps and the ones that I use most often. But it may be that I just don't use very many apps (I have lots installed though), so it just caches whatever I've rarely used over the past few weeks...

I was also perplexed by the 695MB ram total too... but it makes sense that the rest is reserved for the OS.

I bought new Samsung Galaxy S2 a couple of week back and it showed that it has 1 GB RAM.

Now i upgraded the software to Android 4.0.3 and RAM shows 687MB (total).... How it is possible?

Some RAM is going to allocated to the system and for other things like video memory. ~300 MB actually sounds about right. It probably sets it a little higher than it actually needs, since running out of memory for your OS can be disastrous (system hangs, crashes, etc) so it just reserves extra just in case.
