Root Rooting and upgrading to ICS

Hi all,

I have an out-of-warrenty HTC Desire HD and am considering rooting it and upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich.

  • The only guides I have found to do this say that the camera is not fully functional. Is there a ROM with everything working?
  • Also how will ICS run on my phone? Will it be laggy or smooth?
  • What are the risks of permanently bricking my phone during this process?

Thanks,
Max

Hi MDGM.

What's your current software version? There is a tool which roots and installs clockwork in a couple of clicks, but if your software version starts with a 3, you need to downgrade first which will wipe your handset clean (the tool does it for you though). It's very, very easy with minimal risk of bricking, as long as you read the manual and ensure everything is setup correctly before hand.

AFAIK, the camera is a little more stable now, but it's still not 100%. We've quite a meaty thread about ICS on the DHD here: http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/452053-ics-here.html

Also, the DHD comes with a 2 year warranty as standard via HTC (not your carrier) so it will still be covered.

I've also moved this to the DHD section, folk who've used the ICS ROM will be able to chime in and give you more info about it. I've not actually installed it myself, but it's getting better with each build by all accounts.

I'm still using RC3 of LorD ClockN's IceColdSandwich ROM and Angel Camera.

I find the ROM more than OK for my day to day needs as long as you have a task killer as it tends to start to lag after quite a while of use and requires apps killing.

The camera is buggy but that's not really an issue for me as I don't use it much anyway

There have been new versions of this ROM since RC3 but I haven't got round to flashing the latest version yet.

Beware that some apps will not work on ICS (most notably for me personally is Sky Go)
