Root [How To] Root Nexus S / NS4G ~ No Data Wipe! [EASY][WIN/MAC/LINUX]

Step 1)
Download NexusSRootICS.zip and unzip to a folder called nexussrootICS and move that files to the Local Drive (C
Download NexusSRootICS.zip


Step 2)
Open up a command prompt/terminal and browse to the directory by typing:


For Windows:
cd \nexussrootICS


For Mac/Linx:
cd /nexussrootICS


Now you are in the NexusSRoot folder to navigate


Step 3)

Now you need to flash the recovery. In this case we are using TWRP, it is fairly easy to use and utilizes touch screen capabilities





For Nexus S


For Windows:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-crespo-2.0.0RC0.img


For Mac:
./fastboot-mac flash recovery twrp-crespo-2.0.0RC0.img


For Linux:
./fastboot-linux flash recovery twrp-crespo-2.0.0RC0.img


For Nexus S 4G, type the following instead:


For Windows:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-crespo4g-2.0.0RC0.img


For Mac:
./fastboot-mac flash recovery twrp-crespo4g-2.0.0RC0.img


For Linux:
./fastboot-linux flash recovery twrp-crespo4g-2.0.0RC0.img



Step 4) You can now go into Recovery by choosing RECOVERY from the fastboot menu.

Step 5) Next choose

Good guide, thanks! Just used it today to root my Nexus S 4g Running the official Sprint ICS ROM. Followed instructions ad described in post, and everything went according to plan. su showed up in app list, now its time to remove some unwanted google apps (looking at you google books, and google music) and then to install a tether app.

Yeah, that site was a big help for me when it came to rooting and to install the IMM26 rom. Thanks for sharing here. Even when I flashed the IMM76 rom I still referenced this to regain root.

CooLoser, when I try to flash recovery, it fails saying the bootloader is locked. I thought this was a way to root without unlocking the bootloader.

Am I mistaken and I do indeed need to unlock, or am I doing something wrong? Recovery sends fine, but won't write. I am in fastboot mode before doing any of this, FYI.

I successfully rooted my Nexus S 4G and installed IMM26 a while back. I would like to flash IMM76 and must admit, I am not exactly sure what I do to flash a new ROM, b/c I have not modded my phone after the initial root/flash.

Would you mind detailing steps to go from IMM26 to IMM76?

And if I flash IMM76, it sounds like I have to regain root?

my girlfriend is swapping her Nexus S 4g with a funky USB port (still works, kinda) for a new one and i wanted to backup her current one and restore it to the new one. Can i do that with this method and how would i do it?


Looks like once im into the TWRP, i can just click "backup" then once saved, copy that folder to my PC and go and exchange the phone. Then transfer the folder onto the clean new phone, Using the same process now, get it into TWRP as well and click restore and select the backup?

Should i even bother installing superuser.zip?

Do I have to have ICS? I have Android 4.0.4 with build IMM76D, will it still work? (sorry, kind of a newbie in this)

my bootloader is still unlocked, or at least I still have the unlocked lock when booting up, but I lost root when I accepted the 4.1.1 ota. anyway to do a simple root without a pc/laptop bkuz I won't be around one for a few days...
