I quite like the ability to assign a battery icon of your choice, the sound management options of being able to enable/disable a whole range of sound notifications such as camera shutter, battery low etc. and being able to assign a ringtone to each, and to assign LCD DPI (but I would imagine you never want to assign anything other than the max)

I'm still twiddling my fingers and contemplating whether or not to give this one a go...

i tried the Hydrogenics ICS rom, which is pretty similar to the D4 (AOKP/CM9). very nice, has proper scrolling and touch sensitivity, unlike the runaway scrolling found on sammy ICS. in the end, it wouldn't work with a couple of my vital apps (isyncr and my banking app), so hadda ditch it. plus no FM radio which i use a lot. no basic sammy task manager either, which i found useful.

great battery life though with siyah, best i've seen on any ICS rom. and a very customisable rom from the inbuilt options. definitely worth a flash if yer not bothered about radio, or syncing playlists via itunes :)

oh and the gradient backgrounds on the menus etc look lush.

next build is due today or tomorrow, with fixed FM radio which is a major plus for me :)

i've generally been a bit anti ICS on the S2 as i always thought it added nowt new worth having.

but...what i love about the D4 rom is its AOKP, pure Android ICS, and totally stripped of any sammy bloatware (and even google apps, but that can easily be reinstalled via gapps packages), it runs very smooth, with proper menu scrolling aka gingerbread. new system sounds are more subtle, and the whole thing works just loverly. very impressed. latest vers to date has siyah 3.0.1 built in, works great, battery is excellent.

the rom has a plethora of inbuilt customisations (too many to mention in detail) and its own OTA kitchen, which although is limited (for now, early days), still has some great features, like changing battery icons on the fly (no reboot needed), changing video recording format (3GP, MP4), LCD density, system sound management etc etc.

cons? no option to change system fonts (strange!), external_sd is now switched to emmc (can be fixed with a patch), task manager is a bit sparse.

to compare it to checkrom v6? hmmm. well, i think D4 is the current S2 ICS benchmark. no other ICS rom i've tried comes close (and i've tried practically them all, chronic flasher!). im sure checkrom will be built on stock ICS, so it will be interesting to see how their version will compare to AOKP.

Installed D4.
I have to echo simes6600 opinion of it. Very slick.
Missing radio is not a big deal for me but i'll probably update to the next version regardless.

versus AndyX 9.0 - D4 is slightly faster and scrolls better. Battery looks less impressive though (after a couple of hours messing with it).

Just giving this a go now.
Seems very nice indeed. Very slick and some very nice features.

One think thats bugging me at the moment, I cant seem to add my gmail account to the contacts in order to bring them all down to the phone. It seems to insist on an exchange account? If I try adding my gmail account to this, it just complains that it "couldn't open connection to server" Its put the server as "gmail.com" I assume this is correct?

Just done that now Simes then seen you post
Thanks anyway butty.

I have a few problems/questions:

1. My contact's caller id pictures are messed up. They are ok in the contact (people) list itself, but if you select individual contacts to edit, or when you dial a contact, the picture that gets displayed is zoomed in so you only see a fraction of the photo.
2. I cant get swype to work. I restored 3.25 off my titanium backup, but it just force closes. I cant select it in the language+input settings, and it force closes if I tap the settings button next to swype in the language+input screen.
3. What is "pulse notification light?" is this BLN? If so, do you still need to install the BLN app from the market, or does the ROM handle this as standard?
4. I cant see anywhere in the camera app to use the external sd card for photos/videos.

i use Go Contacts so don't get that issue dude. plus never use swype, AI keyboard is my weapon of choice.

i guess pulse notification light is summat to do with BLN, i just unticked it as it didn't do anything for me (for now, till i too find out what it actually does).

aye, just noticed the camera can't use an external sd, which is strange. i thought this might have summat to do with the emmc/external_sd switch with D4, but after patching that there's still no option to save to external with camera.

V5 is now available to download.

This is my first real pop at both ICS and CM-based ROMS, so I found things a little alien at first, but after a few hours using this ROM, I have to say I am liking it a lot. My first intention was to put it on, have a little nosey, then get back onto CheckROM within a few hours and wait for their ICS release. Now I intend keeping it on. I will no doubt try JKay+CheckROM ICS when they get released, but who knows, D4 may become my ROM of choice.

Here is my quick summary of this ROM:

Comes bundled with Siyah 3.1 rc2. I'm unsure what the consensus is as to the recommended scheduler/governor but I'm using vr+lulz and this seems very good, even running on stock voltages. I've not even bothered installing exTweaks yet.

Data usage is a nice feature of ics. no more having to install the rather wakelock hungry "my data manager" any more :)

Loads of new notifications and ringtones :)

A very nice Quiet hours feature in the sound settings that lets you to define a time range to keep the phone quiet :)

The BLN app is required for this to work, so I'm not sure what the Pulse notification light option in the display settings is for. I assume its BLN related. Also, Gokhan is doing some additional BLN work on rc3, so we shall have to wait and see.

Some nice graphical bar graphs under Storage :)

In Advanced, there are some interesting settings, especially for Screen whereby you can adjust general screen ambience for cold, warm etc, along with gamma settings. There is even a Negative mode if you prefer light backgrounds. :)

A great new feature is Profiles, similar to old Nokia days, allowing profiles for work, home, meeting or whatever. However, these profiles also allow you to select if you want data, wifi, gps etc. on/off. You can even define within each profile, a profile for application groups such as calendar, email, sms allowing you to define ringtone settings etc. :)

This version has the D4 rom preferences app embedded into the phones settings menu. This allows you to define your battery icon style, assign tones to system events (eg camera shutter, battery low etc). :)

People have been moaning about ICS scrolling etc. I'm not sure if it's worse than GB, its just different, and needs to get used to.

Browsing with the default browser seem as good as the GB version. It allows you to access bookmarks on your central google account as well as defining local bookmarks. Scrolling is not as smooth for zooming etc. but I'm not sure if this is kernel related, as I usually found NEAK to be smoother in this respect.

I'm not keen at all on the new Contacts (now called People) E-Mail and Calendar apps. These have white light backgrounds and just look alien to the rest of the overall UI experience. :(

Contact pictures mess up for me when they are displayed in the dialer, and when editing/viewing individual contacts. They are ok in the People list itself, but if you select individual contacts to edit, or when you dial a contact, the picture that gets displayed is zoomed in so you only see a fraction of the photo. Yuk! :(

Cant find a way to store to external sd in the camera app. This is my biggest gripe so far :( :( :(

Unsure on how to use the Theme Engine (or indeed where it is!) :(

Swype 3.26 Beta needs to be installed separately.

No Blacklist option in Call settings :(

I thought I would really be missing the brilliant JKay app with its plethora of amazing features, but after nearly a day's use, I can say I'm not (or at least nowhere near as much as I thought I would have) I have to admit, I've been vehemently loyal to JKay and CheckROM for many months now, but this ROM has really been a big surprise for me. I'm not even sure which one will be my keeper when CheckROM v7 eventually hits the streets, as D4 is so good!

I know there seems quite a few negative points above, but these dont really detract overall from the ROM itself. I'm a very fussy user! :)

All I can say is give this one a go. Its excellent!

Nice review. I think I'm going to give this one a try when
I'm slightly more sober. One question though. Did you get Swype working as that's the one thing I can't live without?

Yes butty. swype working as normal.
It's a very nice ROM indeed. The more i use it the more i like the ROM itself.
However, I've changed my mind about ics scrolling. It's horrid, particularly in the browser. i tried dolphin just in case it was the stock browser's problem, but it's common throughout, so it must be an ics scrolling issue. It's getting on my nerves now to be honest. I hope the devs in their wisdom go back to gb scrolling classes.

Don't upgrade to V5. It sucked 30% out of my battery overnight and there's reports on XDA of other people having similar problems :(

could be summat to do with the latest siyah rc2 which was included with d4 v5. i noticed a bit of a battery drain after flashing v5 yesterday, nothing major, but noticeably worse than v4 with the previous siyah.

i flashed the latest neak ICS last night, stock/no tweaks and all seems back to normal. i see siyah 3.1rc4 is due to be released soon.
