Upgrade woes

I have an unbranded SGS2 (on Orange, from phones4u) & I think I've borked it :(
I tried to root it a couple of weeks ago & from what I remember I flashed an insecure kernel to allow this (it didn't work).
I've just tried to upgrade the firmware via the wonderful (?) Kies software & it didn't complete. I've tried to run the emergency recovery but that comes up with an error & says contact the Samsung service centre
When I boot the phone, I get a small icon with a phone, an exclamation mark & a PC. If I boot into recovery mode, it says;
odin mode
product name gt-i9100
custom binary download: yes (1 counts)
current binary: custom
At the bottom, it says downloading...
do not turn off target!!!

Have I screwed it good & proper?
Need help on this please :dontknow:
Thanks in advance.

Downloaded from here as the link on XDA Developes was dead. Tried xwla4 but when I follow the instructions, Odin says it failed
Can I use a different firmware or will that screw up even more?
Getting worried now as my life was on that bloody phone!
I really appreciate your help here guys (I also appreciate what an idiot I've been - using K**s!!!)

Just some quick thoughts on this...

Have you tried your USB in different ports on your computer... it can make a difference.

Have you followed this from the Dummies Guide?

"Step 2.

Right click on Odin3 v1.85 and select, "Run as Administrator", to open it. Ensure that the Samsung Kies programme is not running at the same time as this can cause problems

With Odin3 v1.85 displayed on your PC screen, click on the PDA button and navigate to the CF-Root Tar .zip file, that you placed on your home screen, and select it.

Make sure that Re-Partition is unchecked and that Auto Reboot, F.Reset Time and PDA are checked and that the PDA box now contains your .tar file.

Different USB port did the trick! :D
Thanks so much for your help guys, you're true gents!
Next (stupid) question, am I now rooted? if not, how can I get ICS on this phone?
Thanks again for your help

Install Root Checker, free, from the Play Store.

It depends on whether you are after a stock or custom ICS?

For stock ICS, see under, "My firmware is not eligible for ICS yet but I want it now!", here:-

For a custom ROM of ICS, then see here:-

Root checker says I'm not rooted.
I'm really not looking to root (the only reason I attempted it a few weeks ago was to try & sort out the wi-fi connection issues I had with certain routers).
As I'm not rooted now, can I upgrade to the stock ICS via Kies or will that goose the phone again?

What firmware/kernel did you install?

That is stock, unrooted, GB firmware alright. What is your CSC code?

See here, on how to obtain your CSC code.

Is that the firmware that the phone originally had?

CSC code - I9100DBTKH1

Dunno if it's the original firmware though, sorry :(

DBT is the Open firmware for Germany which has had an ICS update.

However, if you do not know if this was your original phones, out-of-the-box, firmware then you will probably not be able to update via Kies.

In which case you will have to download the ICS firmware for your region/carrier and reflash it via Odin. See under, "My firmware is not eligible for ICS yet but I want it now!", here:-

Just to clarify, do I need to get the one listed for UK/Orange which has different PDA & CSC numbers to those of my phone or go for the German one which has the same PDA/CSC numbers?

Sorry to be a pain in the ass, just don't wanna screw it up again :D

As it was an unlocked handset purchased via P4U it's likely the original CSC was either XEU or CPW. I would suggest using the XEU update released last week - that will leave you with the stock Samsung ICS firmware.

I'm using an Orange Branded locked handset, but flashed the CPW firmware to it as it had no bloatware. It worked a charm. Since then I've updated to ICS through Kies. I'm surprised how easy it was.
