If I have facebook on my phone and dont log out of it and just shut the app down does this carry on using my data? Also if I go into the settings and then applications to look at the running applications can I shut any of these down or if I left them open would they use the data, I do deactivate the data network whilst in work and at night when the phone isnt being used so will this save my data?

Sorry for all the questions, only just started using this phone and have been used to the Iphone.

Also what do the green and red up and down arrows mean that flash on an off at the top of the screen??

Welcome to AF Helhoward:)
Shutting down some apps could cause a problem. However that is usually not the case with most user installed apps.
The issue seems to be autorun permissions for apps(they can run whenever they want). These permissions can be change on rooted devices to try and conserve data/battery.
What kind of device do you have?

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2.

If I dont log out of face book and just press the button at the bottom to shut it down will it carry on running and use my data allowance?

Yes it will still be running in the background. When I used to be on Facebook I changed to just viewing FB on a browser as opposed to the app itself to insure it wasn't draining resources or using data.
Is your device rooted? If so there will be other options available to keep the FB app from continuously running if you rather use the app then a browser to go on FB.:)
