iPhone Vs Nexus One - Cracked Screen

Sorry for the 'ghey' title, I know these iphone vs nexus things pop up all over.

I just wanted to express how gutted I am.

I went out drinking last night, and i ALWAYS show off my [nexus one] phone (perhaps a little too much, but people always like what they see!)

So, last night me and a new friend (I've just moved London and meeting a lot of cool new people!) - were chatting away at the bar, and he asked how durable the nexus one was as he has an iPhone and he's dropped it a few times and its still fine...

...I got my phone out my pocket to show him the build quality us really good compared to say, the G1 for example. As I got it out my pocket, it slipped out my hand and landed face down on the wooden floor.

I was hopeful that it would still be fine, but its not. The screen has completely shattered, and its got a rough service (broken glass, basically). And there is not one, not ONE single pixel that I can see. All i can see is a spectacular blur of ink, or whatever is is. (a bit like when you push your LCD screen on an old calculator).

So yes. I am VERY gutted. I paid to have the Nexus One shipped from US to the UK - I've had it maybe 6 or 7 weeks.

Hopefully my mobile phone insurance with my bank will cover it, if not then I will have to go back to me 6230i

I dropped my phone like you once, it slid across the floor to safety. I hope the insurance works out for you.

What did you drop it into exactly? If it's pavement, then yeah, it'll most likely not survive unscathed.

I've dropped it on marble. No problem, except a small scuff mark. On which note, plenty of iPhones don't exactly have amazing build quality. Just today I saw someone post that their iPhone-owning friends are on their fourth or fifth unit in a year.

I can just imagine what the iPhone guy is saying about N1's today. Hopefully he doesn't post on a forum, they'd be having a laugh riot.

It slipped out of my hand at pocket height (my jeans, as I was just taking it out of my pocket). It landed on the wooden floor face down. I have done this MANY times with MANY phones.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Nexus One, and I wouldn't want any other phone. I love it, but this is rather frustrating

Bobby, as much as I am disappointed with the Nexus One's build flaws, this was technically your fault. Still, something has to be done by HTC. I really hope the Verizon version gets fixed.

Dude, you dropped a phone. It happens. It all depends on how the handset hits, and what it hits. I've dropped my N1 onto a wood floor and it was fine.

Still, something has to be done by HTC. I really hope the Verizon version gets fixed.

What exactly can they do? Every touchscreen phone in the world has this problem. A glass screen is never unbreakable. I personally watched someone drop an iPhone not three feet and end up with a cracked screen. A friend of mine recently destroyed a Droid by dropping it, and the Droid is supposed to have a more durable screen.

Oh, I understand that glass cracks, but they shouldn't shatter. It's no secret that the screen on the Nexus One is more prone to cracks than industry standards; in fact people have reported that the phone's screen spontaneously cracks. Do you know what HTC said? They said "people forget that the Nexus One doesn't belong in [one's] pocket." Wow... talk about fail.

How can HTC fix it? Use a more durable screen. Obvious? It doesn't have to deflect bullets or survive a nuclear holocaust, but it damn well better withstand a fall from the coffee table or simply being stored in my pocket.

That whole thing with Cnet's phone seems like bunk to me. Someone probably knocked it off the desk while the reviewer was out. Yeah, the pocket thing is dumb, but they're just covering themselves. But I believe they were responding to Cnet, and that phone's glass wasn't cracked, it was the digitizer that was broken.

We can't accept a few anecdotes as proof that the screen is using some sort of extra fragile glass. I remember someone in the Droid forum saying his Droid cracked for no reason. I don't believe it's ever "no reason" though.

I was riding my recumbent trike with an iphone in my pocket listening to some tunes. At a certain point, I heard an external scraping sound as I was listening (not in the headphones, but outside of them). I rode about 30 feet at which point I decided to stop and see what was up. The zipper on my bike jacket had given up the ghost and I saw I had been dragging my iPhone from the headphone socket along the asphalt street. I stopped horrified. A quick look at the phone revealed a few scratches on the chrome bezel and lots of scratches on the screen protector but the screen itself was in tact and perfect once I removed the protector. I was amazed.

BTW, I tried a Nexus One and the radio performance was horrible. I actually get much better signal with my G3 iPhone using T-Mobile's Edge service. In my house, I got no signal on the Nexus One and couldn't make or receive calls. With the iPhone I can. Since I can't get 3G on T-Mobile with the iPhone I would like to get a replacement, but if the replacement can't get a signal it's useless to me as a phone. The Nexus had the latest updates.

I have to say....yesterday here in NYC it was raining like CRAZY. I parked my car, got out, and my phone FOR THE FIRST TIME slipped out of my pocket. It hit the concrete face down, then slid about 5 feet under my car (don't ask me how the hell that happened).

I couldn't reach it at all, so I got an umbrella to pull it to me....again while face down. Surprisingly it didn't shatter....although I do have some VERY HEALTHY NICKS all along the sreen. When the sreen is off, you can really see them all. When it's on and bright it's harder to see.

So much for all of those scratch resistance tests.

After a few months of proving to my bank that the phone was indeed mine they sent me a cheque this week!

The phone is now available in the UK, as opposed to January when I bought my first one from google.com - I went to the shop a few hours ago, so I am now the proud owner of a Nexus One, for the second time! For 3 months I've been using a K850i!!

Glad to be back folks - what have I missed? First apps I installed:

In fact, thats *all* I've installed. I seem to have the European build this time round though, "EPF30" - so looks like I wont be manually installing FroYo

Welcome back Bobby You might find a lot of new 'faces' here now since you've been away for so long

I hope what happened to you NEVER EVER happen to me!!! One thing I fear since I love my Nexus nude.

If you backed up your apps to your SD card, you should be able to restore them with astro or some other management app app.
