Most of those design changes "Samsung's lawyers made" (not gonna get into the invalidity of this claim) were ones that I was glad Samsung made. From the front, the SGS3 looks great, not ugly. And as for user interface, Touchwiz needed a little added differentiation from iOS, at least in my opinion.

Its the rear of the device and the materials used back there that have me underwhelmed and this article mentions nothing about those aspects of the phone.

Well, the S3 is far from ugly but it isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the S2.

I know a phone should be about quality of form and function rather than looks but let's face it, that's not the case. Whilst it won't stop me from buying an S3 once I get my hands on one and find out if I like it, I can see a lot of people just dismissing the phone due to looks.

Exactly. To be honest Samsung phones have never really been great on design (in my opinion at least). I always thought that the GS and GSII were way too similar to the iPhones, which is why 2 yrs ago I chose the HTC Desire over the GS. It was obvious that Samsung were going to avoid further legal trouble with the GSIII.

But I have to say that my initial reaction last Thurs evening, when I first saw the image of the GSIII on Twitter, was "Wow! It looks gorgeous!"

Beauty is a very subjective thing and always a matter of choice. But butt ugly??? Never. This phone is not that.

Honestly it looks good to me. I like curvy design over boxy one.
If it just looked like SGS2 from year ago, people would complain what were they doing for one year on external design? Sadly some poeple just live to complain.

I think it looks kinda ugly on the back but really nice on the front. The reason why I think it looks "ugly" on the back is because it has minimal styling around its camera and speakers. Its just there and it doesn't work well with what Samsung have tried to make a smooth "Hyperglaze" body. Its something rough with what should be a smooth rounded body. And the minimal camera styling seems familar with the Galaxy Mini? Not shouting flagship thats all, and people want a phone thats "all eyes on me" when they're spending around

I'm with you. I think it is certainly an unpleasing design. I currently own an iPhone 3GS, so it's not that I hate curves. In fact, I don't like the design of the iPhone 4 because I find it uncomfortable to hold around the 90 degree edges. Maybe it's just all the BS they spun about being "derived from nature." I'm an architecture student and whenever anyone says their design was influenced by nature, it normally just means their project is in the shape of a leaf and Samsung did no better with a phone shaped like a pebble. That's not a design motif, that's just a false mimicry for marketing's sake.

I can understand them not wanting to get sued, but I was really excited when I saw this fake leak below because I personally think this would have been a great looking phone that evolved their design decisions. I like the look of the One X so maybe I am just a fan of two-tone phones whereas the S3 is just a slab of cheap looking plastic, but who knows. It won't keep me from buying the phone though, since my iPhone is deteriorating and won't let me dial out 50% of the time, and this will be the best spec'd phone out at release.

It's not flattering in deep blue at all. That's why I am choosing the white one - even though I am sure I will still put a case on it.

I thought the white plastic back looked cheaper. Its plain while the blue has a glossy look with the pebble lines for added beauty.

I think Samsung are really trying to hurtle the S3 at the iPhone market now. The design is so much less function, and more look orientated.

iPhone = Glass which seems innovative but smashes when dropped.

S3 = Plastic, but the smooth kind of plastic. They say its "Hyperglazed" meaning it doesn't scratch as easy. What happened to the rough plastic for grip? (Found in S2 and GNEX) Hyperglaze/Pebble like = more drops (But iPhoners don't care)

I agree, this thing looks just like a iPhone with what appears to be a curved aluminum band. I would definitely get a pebble color. even then all this naturalistic crap is for the birds. I am not looking for warm fuzzy when it comes to a phone. I want something brash end un mistakeable a unique. Only thing close to SGS3 specs and can do that HTC EVO 4G LTE (LTEVO)

I think people worried about the looks of their phone need to ask themselves why they need to impress someone with the looks of their phones.

My S2 has been in a Seido case and holster with a screen protector since day one. I worry a lot more about protecting a large investment of hard earned $$ than how it looks.

But it still looks cool.

Patent litigation is insanely expensive. Plus, once you've successfully tested a patent in court, it is easier to get everyone else to settle. Usually the litigant will sue a first company and if successful they will then threaten to everyone else to settle. The long winded point is that HTC could very well just be next.

I highly doubt the phone looks like that anyway when it makes it to the States. The US carriers always seem to want to redesign it to fit their brand. Spint will come up with something goofy, Verizon will make it fit their stupid "Droid" brand, none of the US phones will have the physical home button, all of the carriers will have the four capacitive buttons painted on, and I doubt the blue color flies on 2 or 3 of the major US carriers.

Agree, we'll get capacitive buttons which I greatly prefer and pry different shape, each carrier before has done their own thing including various screen sizes before, quite a few variations of the Galaxy S2 before.
