Root Data corruption?

lurch101

Lurker
Hey all, lately I'd been having some problems with restarts (including the 5-vibe-of-death). The most disconcerting effect was a couple times now, the whole phone acted like it was the first time I'd turned it on. It would run me through how to use the keyboard, etc. Dolphin browser would start, run me through the first few setup screens, then crash. Wash, rinse repeat. I had to uninstall and re-install it, which lost my bookmarks but not my gestures (?).

Upon reboots, some apps would crash instantly (Amazon MP3, DirecTV, Dropbox), some needed to be fully re-installed before they'd work. PowerAmp always starts at the same song, no matter what I listened to last. This leads me to believe there's some data corruption going on. None of the apps are on the removable SD card.

Some background: I'm rooted, running Froyo, kernel 2.6.32.17. The random restarts were happening when I'd have a lot of apps running (PowerAmp over bluetooth + Maps Navigation usually). This generally led to the 5-vibe, which would start after a while, meaning it could be overheating. Occasionally, I'd bring the phone home, start it charging, and find it had turned itself off without restarting.

I searched these forums a few days ago and set the phone to "home only," and haven't had any restarts yet, but these aren't the only problems.

New to the issue is my new car stereo. I bought a JVC KD-X50BT, which has included Bluetooth. Previously, I'd used a Belkin Aircast which would connect instantly and disconnect when the unit powered off. Now the unit still says the bluetooth is connected even when the truck is powered off and across a parking lot. Additionally, when we're lucky enough to have the bluetooth connect and play a song, I get 2 minutes MAX before the audio drops out. The phone still says it's connected, and PowerAmp is still playing with time clicking off, it just drops the audio. After much searching, I can't find anyone with a similar problem with the head unit (everyone LOVES it), so I'm under the impression this is also an issue with the phone. I may try to replicate the problem with the wife's iPhone or tablet just to be sure.

I've considered doing EarlyMon's "How to fix Froyo or Gingerbread" cleanup, but if it is data corruption (bad internal memory?), I don't want to risk bricking the phone. He also states that it's specifically for the EVO 4G, which concerns me a little.

Anyone want to suggest other fixes that may be of use? Please skip the "change phone" idea, as I intend to sell this to a friend once I upgrade, so it'll still need to be operational. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you just need to wipe the data in clockwork and reflash a rom to start fresh. I'd also suggest copying all the contents off your SD card to a PC, formatting the card to FAT32 (don't use quick format) and then copy the contents back.

Your Bluetooth issues could just be rom specific, most "sense" roms don't work well with Bluetooth. You may want to try an AOSP rom (cyanogen).

Ps I'm going to move this to the root section.

That sounds one heck of a lot easier than what I was expecting! Do you have a specific guide you can recommend?

Would you recommend letting the phone do the formatting? I believe I read that today.

And Cyanogen looks awesome! If this works, I might have a new-found love for this phone!

No problem, we're here to help :)

So here's a breakdown of what I did and where I'm at currently:

Following multiple instructions for backing up personal data before doing a wipe, I installed Titanium Backup and bought the Pro key. I then tied it to my Dropbox account, selected the apps to back up, then told it to back up all user-installed apps. At this point, they were backed up to my card and, redundantly, to my Dropbox account. Genius feature if you ask me.

I then copied the contents of the card to my PC and formatted it (not Quick Format, but a full format) to FAT32. This takes a surprisingly long time for a 16GB card.

In the down time, I downloaded the CyanogenMod 7 for my device (CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on Gingerbread for those of you keeping score at home) and the appropriate Google Apps for my CyanogenMod. This wasn't too well defined in other tuts, so hopefully this helps someone in the future. The Cyanogen links on the site were all dead (oddly), but the torrent (from the site) worked.

I then followed Iowa's instructions from the guide you pointed me to (thank you).

Cyanogen booted, looked really awesome, and wanted me to set up my accounts. I'm currently waiting for the PC to copy all the data back to the SD card so I can restore from Titanium. It's supposed to take about an hour.

I'm wondering if this might be a bad idea. Should I re-install the apps from Titanium and wait on the app data in case the problems from before come back?

Additionally, I have a handful of MicroSD cards around (2x16GB, 1x8GB, 1x2GB, some 256MB). Could I have saved some time by saving the mod on one of those cards, running it from there, then copying the data from that card to my original? I believe copying the data from the card defrags it, which is moderately beneficial, but I could just do that with any defragmenting program. I guess I could have deleted the music and pictures to save time. Definitely will on the next go-round.

Pretty stoked to see how this goes with the Bluetooth. Can't be much worse than playing 2 minutes and crashing the phone. If we say goodbye to the 5-vibe-of-death, I'm gonna be STOKED!!!

Sounds like you are in good shape, I'd say it's okay to go ahead and restore just the apps and hold off on restoring the data for your apps. You can go through and restore data individually for them at a later point. Good move getting the pro key, it wil save you plenty of time. Another guide on titanium that is worth reading:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/233251-how-titanium-backup-tips.html

You could of just downloaded the ROM to another card and installed it from there, some people store all of their nandroids and roms on a separate card.... But the reason I had you copy everything off and format it was to rule out any corruption on the card that may have been causing you problems.

And there is no need to defrag sd cards or any type of flash memory. :)

So I've got ClockworkMod on, and I'm still getting used to the new UI. Some things are better (no bloatware), but some are taking a minute to get used to (no direct-dial contact search). The biggest problem so far is every time I try to load "Sounds" to change the ringtone and notification sounds, it crashes.

"The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly."

All the other options work fine. Should I try to re-flash the ROM?

I'm also still getting the reboot-to-5-vibe-of-death behavior again. The first time I was using Dolphin Browser, the second I believe was from it trying to find updates. Could this be something from restoring the SD card contents?

Try out "dialer one" it dials just like the sense dealer...

As for the sounds...if you used titanium backup to restore settings, it may be causing the problem. It's also possible it has something to do with your sd card. The only thing you can really do is start from scratch and don't restore anything. You may want to try running the 5 vibes of death fix again.

Used ROM Manager to update my Clockwork Mod from 2.5 to 5 (flashed 3x), backed everything up, booted to Clockwork, backup, installed Cyanogen and GApps, booted, and

WE'RE RUNNING!! All good, sound works, everything is going swimmingly now.

I did install all the apps straight off the market again, and only as I've been needing them to help determine what may be causing problems. So far, all good.

The bluetooth connection to the head unit is working a lot better now as well. Doesn't connect immediately, but with the option to unlock straight to "Bluetooth Settings" and hit connect, it's working exactly as I needed.

I did get a couple 5-vibes while rebooting, but I changed batteries and it immediately started. Kinda gives credence to the overheat idea.

Huge thanks for showing me all this! It's a rekindled love for this phone. And a delayed upgrade!
