My name is Joseph, and today at approximately 4:00PM PST I suffered a tragedy beyond words.

My beloved, less than 2 day old, Evo 4G LTE was dropped. It fought a hard battle against a very rough concrete slab, but in the end, the concrete was the victor.

I believe this to possibly be the first if not one of the first few LTEvo's to have been broken.

:(

I contacted Sprint customer care to get the phone number for Asurion, she tried hard for a good 10 minutes talking to other people to see about getting the deductible waived but wasn't able to do it.
After getting a hold of Asurion she verified what I had already knew, that I would not be getting an over night replacement as they haven't actually launched yet. She gave me a safe estimate of 5 days (I assume working days) with a $100 deductible. Fortunately it was before june when the TEP rates change so I didnt have to pay the new $200 rate.

The kicker of all this is I was in a Sprint Corporate Store yesterday to by the Otterbox defender (which I believe would have saved it) but all the had was a pink Otterbox, the sales rep told me they should get the rest in a few days. So I went with a body glove for the time being and planned to pick up the Defender when they came in. In retrospect, I would have been happy with pink...

I went to Bestbuy and purchased the Defender.

First off, I'm terribly sorry for your loss. Second, what's this about TEP going up to 200 in June, I haven't heard anything about this. Are customers not getting notified or something?
Yeah, the monthly payment goes up from 8 to 11 dollars and the deductible is going up also
Check out this link over at the insider

WTF? Did that concrete have a gun? Now I'm paranoid and I've never even broken a screen before.

It was super rough, high rocks and crap, might as well been gravel, My Evo landed face down and bounced a couple times. My soul broke when it hit the ground.

I thought it was Gorilla Glass. I was hoping that was strong stuff, doesn't look so tough on that graphic photo. Do you think a case with a screen protector would have saved it?
Sprint sent me a case that covers the back of it only. Was wondering if I need more. Also I have never had the insurance before. Would love to hear feed back on the subject...I did not opt for it yet. They told me I had 30 days to decide...If we believe a case with a screen protector is indeed going to be a good investment, I would love to hear recommendations. Does anyone make waterproof cases for it? Sorry if this seems elementary to you. I am at Android elementary level...:p (Barely out of pre-school really. Windows phone was my last one. HTC touch pro II)

I had the insurance on my OG EVO and I was glad I did. The original took a dip in my hot tub, and the 2nd one started shutting off every time it got bumped (in my pocket, laying down on a table, etc). But it looks like they're bumping the monthly fee up to $11 and that the deductible is going to $200 (was $100 for the OG). $200 is going to be a deal breaker for me. I bought mine at Best Buy (edit: no deductible)..only you have to bring phone to the store and it takes about 2 days to get replacement but they'll give you a loaner so you're not phoneless(Sprint/Assurion is overnight UPS). I think I'll sign up for the BB plan.

UPDATE: Best Buy is $10 per month with no deductible. I'm signing up!

The Otterbox defender I had for my 3D was a good investment for me and saved that phone at least 4 distinct times that I can remember, more if I thought about it. That's the case I went looking for at sprint yesterday but all they had was a pink commuter case (I think)

Gorilla glass is a great scratch resistant touch screen, but ya throw rocks at it and yeah, it'll break. The defender has a hard plastic shell protected by a rubber outer layer and a built in screen protector. I think that it would have saved mine from the fall today.

I dont know of any water proof cases

I'm also glad I had insurance, I have always had it and it's a very nice safety net, I have used it 4-5 times sense I have had sprint.

I am really sad about your loss _mark :(

The case you had on it. Was that the htc case. I did not know they would send one, but I got a blue one the day after the phone came in.

Thanks for the info guys. $200.00 deductible at $11.00 mo...yuk...I may give best buy a call. Sounds like _mark had good service with Asurion, any remarks about BB?

Man that sucks dude!! But I can tell you that I completely know how you feel.

I bought my OG Evo the day it launched back in June of 2010. I walked out of the Sprint store at approximately 10:30 am with my new love and was the happiest guy in the world.....16 hours later I was staring down the barrel of a loaded gun and was being told to empty my pockets and hand everything over. This included my wallet, my laptop, my Blackberry Storm (which had all of my contacts in it), and my brand new Evo.

I feel your pain bro. Sorry for your loss.

Man I was really hoping the gorilla glass would stop that I thought they said it could shatter that's kinda a bummer..I have a zagg on it now and a defender on the way hopefully ill be safe..

P.s. if that's true about tep being that much then that's just plain rediculous..at this point you might as well just buy a new one and not pay 200 bucks for a refurbished model that was beat to death and then had some lipstick slapped on it...makes me glad I went with the radioshack insurance...

P.s.s- sorry for ypur loss I can't imagine the pain! The anguish!

That is sad to look at!

I am so sorry for your loss!

Reminds me of the reason I have insurance on my OG EVO.

I had a Samsung Instinct that took a dip in a river, and did not have insurance at the time....$450 for a replacement....I learned the need for insurance.

This increase in the monthly insurance AND the doubling of the deductible makes me want to see if there's any other type of insurance protection one can get for this phone. If not, I might just have it surgically implanted to some part of my body to make sure it doesn't fall or get dropped.
