For the third time. You cant dial *228 directly!!! Make a new contact. Call it prl update or whatever your heart desires. Make *228 the contacts number. Save the contact. Now go to the contact you named, and call it. Voila!! Keep it up and i am going to have to post a video of my nexus doin the update. Ive noted my prl before and after doing this, and it always goes to a higher number.

So I am not getting as good reception on my GS3 as on my Droid X2, so I tried this out. I made a contact with *228 and dialed. I did indeed update my PRL, and the number went to 52823 from something lower. My signal strength went from around 105 to 95.

Except that now I'm not getting a 4G connection, only 3G. Why would that be? When I go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names, the second entry in the list "LTE Verizon - Internet" was selected, now the first one "EHRPD - Verizon Internet" is selected. When I try to manually select the LTE one, it simply reverts back to the first one.

Any thoughts?

Well, as mentioned before, I have three fringe places. One where calls can be an issue and the other two impact data with weaker reception. GS3 passes, cool! If it does not, I will post and move on into the Sammy sunset and NOT EVER consider another device by them, since they are too busy cloning the BAD things from Apple (Siri), rather than the GOOD things like Moto radio system design.

I hope this rant becomes a recant :) ;) Guess I will get mine in the next four days or so..... dang Best Buy.

Based on my trend tally from several forums, for every good reception report like treb's, I see two bad ones. Not sure how much of the bad ones though might be trolls in some forums..... No, not referring to here, since folks here seem too legit to quit. Hammer time.

Just released: New Incredible 4G based on S4 SOC also ditches the WiFi toggle and adds the same custom notification as on the GS3. Yo Verizon, What’s With This Ongoing Wi-Fi Toggle Notification on the Galaxy S3 and Incredible 4G? – Droid Life

Coincidence?

Did you read the article?? I did yesterday:

"It’s probably safe to assume that this move is to get people to use WiFi more. If they are constantly reminding you to turn on WiFi, you probably will turn it on. Then you’ll use WiFi and not their network, which might be a smart idea for those of you stuck on those tiered or ridiculously overpriced shared data plans. I can’t help but admit that I find this ultra-obnoxious, though." -Droidlife

The toggle is not omitted because of challanges with the phone communicating with VZW's network... the option buried in the menu works the same way as a toggle. The coincidence is that VZW wants people to use more wifi as they eliminate our unlimited data and push us to shared data plans.

What is the problem? Can't you disable wifi functions in advanced settings?

I leave wifi off unless no choice but wifi.

You can disable wifi. But the VZW version is the only one that doesn't have a toggle in the pull down menu. Instead has a constant reminder in your pull down menu to remind you to turn on wifi. If you hit the message it takes you to the menu in advanced settings

If you go to the droid life article they have a screen shot. In the grand scheme of things its not a big deal... the menu option works just like a toggle would.. I just find it annoying to have a constant reminder from VZW to use wifi.

Now that I have to pay full retail for life to keep my unlimited data I have no plans to use Wi-Fi ever. Going to get my $'s worth !! Battery Life won't be what it could be using Wi-Fi, but who cares.

Everything I read from Verizon from when I had my gnex was don't ever try to use *228 with there 4g phones...could cause major issues

Yep.

Try pulling the battery for 1 minute also try *22899 I'm curious if that works

I pulled the battery and SIM card, and it didn't help.

I also tried *22899, and it didn't work.

What next?

Can you not just leave wifi on? does it drain the battery or something? I leave it on all the time on my 4s and was planing to do this with my s3.
Sorry if this has been answered maybe in another post but I did a brief search and did not see the answer?

Thanks.

WiFi can be a tremendous drain on the battery. It requires a lot more power than let's say bluetooth due to the broadcast range.

Wow, this shit is lengthy. I had a GNex and received my S3 yesterday. My stepdaughter has the Nexus, will run some tests when she gets home tonight. However, I spent a whole day with the S3 and the signal seems better. I have never had an issue making or dropping calls with my Nexus. Sitting here now, my S3 -103 dms, speed test 10.0 down, 11.3 up, wife's TB on 2.3, -83 dbm, speed test 10.7 down, 10.3 up. Pretty comparable.
